Pops bills himself as “The Smartest Monster on the Planet”, with his specimen jars filled with human body parts so that he and his seven demented sons could relish in these souvenirs. But Police Chief Gregory Greenacre knows of Pops’ deviant activities and wants to bring him and his corrupted sons to justice and Pops can’t have that. So he devises a plan and calls it “The Ultimate Mind F*ck” and f*cking the mind it does.
I could barely get through this book, but I ‘bore’ through hoping. Talk about perversion, immorality, humiliation—it is all in this book. The author’s analogies and wordplay are clever and twisted. The writing so compelling that the words jump out at the reader and we see scenes that are mortifying and demeaning. There is no love in these scenes of kink and sex done by a warped and bizarre mind. And the description of bodily fluids is almost too much to glaze over. What happens to Chief Greenacre and his family is beyond what a normal person would consider punishing someone.
There are hundreds of horrific ways to taunt and torture your enemy, but “Last Dance” is dark and disturbing. It is well-written telling us how hate can lead to degradation. If you expect the good guys to win, you are wrong. In the end, Pops is thinking of a Super “Ultimate Mind F*ck”. Oh, God! I hope that is not a lead-in to another book. I don’t think my sympathetic heart can take it!
Beyond Dark, Beyond Intense, & Stunningly, Unapologetically Violent… Holy. Flipping. Hell… “Last Dance” by James Crow is true to its tag line, in every way imaginable! A short story depicting a plot of revenge, orchestrated so perfectly, almost lovingly so, it would make Hannibal Lecter weep with pride.
It is an absolutely twisted, beyond sadistic, journey that will make your stomach weak and the very edges of your soul curl in on itself. And it is most definitely NOT for the easily offended or weak of heart. Oh no, this story is one for those who love the lure of things that truly go bump in the night. For those who can imagine the true horrors existing in the world. How much unchecked, unfiltered depravity lurks up your street, at the neighbors house, or in your very home.
And despite not containing enough back story for me where Pop and his spawn are concerned, it is gloriously sinister and broken. It made my nerves sizzle in ways I have not felt from a book in quite some time.
I had not read anything by this author before “Last Dance”, but my god what an introduction. How this man’s psyche must tick…utterly fascinating. How he sees the images of his stories within his mind, I would truly love to know. His writing cleanly attacks your senses, his prose cuts you to the emotional bone, is stunningly, unapologetically violent. Crow’s characters methodically disturbed and complex. His imagery beyond dark, beyond thought provoking, and beyond intense.
This story, these characters, Pop, will stay with you long after you’ve finished reading. They will haunt your daydreams and be the star players of your nightmares.
I received it with great joy! Perfectly gruesome -this is deliciously twisted, that fed my dark heart! And, I’m now in torment with myself, questioning my own sanity because I found it a thrilling, gripping read that I didn’t want to end.
Just when you think our darling twisted James Crow couldn’t get any darker…
He brings us Pop’s…
This is a brutally twisted mind fuck tale, literally.
Only an evil genius could come up with this storyline.
There are literally no words to properly describe these demented characters.
Well done oh wise twisted leader.
Absolutely Brilliant!! This story is gripping, intense, dark, twisted, and unlike anything I’ve ever read before. This story is gruesome, but yet it is awesomely unique and unlike anything I’ve read from James Crow. This was a riveting read, exceeded my expectations and a definite page turner in the true sense of the word.
