Kitchen Confidential reveals what Bourdain calls “twenty-five years of sex, drugs, bad behavior and haute cuisine.”
Last summer, The New Yorker published Chef Bourdain’s shocking, “Don’t Eat Before Reading This.” Bourdain spared no one’s appetite when he told all about what happens behind the kitchen door. Bourdain uses the same “take-no-prisoners” attitude in his deliciously funny and … deliciously funny and shockingly delectable book, sure to delight gourmands and philistines alike. From Bourdain’s first oyster in the Gironde, to his lowly position as dishwasher in a honky tonk fish restaurant in Provincetown (where he witnesses for the first time the real delights of being a chef); from the kitchen of the Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center, to drug dealers in the east village, from Tokyo to Paris and back to New York again, Bourdain’s tales of the kitchen are as passionate as they are unpredictable. Kitchen Confidential will make your mouth water while your belly aches with laughter. You’ll beg the chef for more, please.

Having loved Anthony Bourdain’s TV shows for many years, I started collecting his books. I have an older copy of this, so I was very happily surprised to find the updated version under the Christmas tree. In light of his recent passing, I found the new material very poignant. The stories are raw, colorful, and share the author/ chef’s passion for …
He had talent and many opportunities to do well and live well but squandered it all to drugs. A story of mental deficiency due to alcohol and drugs.
Excellent!
Interesting if you like Bourdain. I do. Some you have probably heard if you watch him on TV. I DO. SAD THAT WE LOST HIM.
RIP A.B.
This was an audio book choice and was narrated by the author. I felt like I was sitting right with Anthony Bourdain as he told his tales of being a chef. One of the best audio books I have ever listened to!
I think I liked Anthony Bourdain more before I read this book. He was a tortured person. It was a shame he lived his life with no faith; it would have carried him through a lot of the troubles he faced. He was a talented, extremely smart person, and he did have a code of sorts, but I think he would had a much better life if he had been more …
Eye opening, rough, fascinating and original. So sad that he is gone.
Just reread in honor of Tony. Miss him so much. So sad. He had so much more to give. One of a kind.
I loved Anthony Bourdain and his straight-forward, no nonsense way of putting things. He was also the other owner of the NY attitude.
Great insight into the mind of an addict and brilliant mind. His death is so tragic and such a loss.
A really DIFFERENT book, a memoir of a life as a cook in upscale (mostly) restaurants….no, Bourdain was NEVER a “chef” as he admits, he was a COOK.
Great, funny, fascinating look at the world of restaurant kitchens from the inside!
As a restaurant professional, I ADORDED this book because of the way Anthony SO
accurately describes the professional restaurant kitchen environment.
My nephew introduced me to this book, and it was my first contact with anything Anthony Bourdain. It is really a special book, and although I have never worked in the food industry, it was my late husband’s career. He read it before I did and his comments were astounding. He felt that Tony had captured the “kitchen” workplace to a T. We were …
You’ll NEVER eat Eggs Benedict at a Sunday Brunch again!
Mr. Bourdain gives “truths” about necessary kitchen staff (restaurant backbone) no one sees, or thinks about that helps make food great!
I wasn’t sure if I’d like this book. But, it was interesting with a wet sense of hot throughout.
I really liked the book, but it is definitely “R” rated!
I wasn’t sure if I should give this book three or four stars, and there was no way to give 3.5. I am not a fan of Mr. Bourdain, but his insights into the restaurant industry are eye opening. I have tried to use some of his suggestions regarding what to avoid at buffets, and when to go and visit other restaurants to limit my risk of getting sick. …
Unexpected and hilarious introduction to an “underworld” I didn’t know existed. Thoroughly enjoyable.
