Kitchen Confidential reveals what Bourdain calls “twenty-five years of sex, drugs, bad behavior and haute cuisine.”
Last summer, The New Yorker published Chef Bourdain’s shocking, “Don’t Eat Before Reading This.” Bourdain spared no one’s appetite when he told all about what happens behind the kitchen door. Bourdain uses the same “take-no-prisoners” attitude in his deliciously funny and … deliciously funny and shockingly delectable book, sure to delight gourmands and philistines alike. From Bourdain’s first oyster in the Gironde, to his lowly position as dishwasher in a honky tonk fish restaurant in Provincetown (where he witnesses for the first time the real delights of being a chef); from the kitchen of the Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center, to drug dealers in the east village, from Tokyo to Paris and back to New York again, Bourdain’s tales of the kitchen are as passionate as they are unpredictable. Kitchen Confidential will make your mouth water while your belly aches with laughter. You’ll beg the chef for more, please.

Striking reality
I read it many years ago and found it fascinating. I always had a romantic vision of “hard core” cooks and waitresses.
A fascinating read about what goes on in restaurant kitchens.
With this book, all the secrets of restaurant kitchens have been brought to life. It may put you off going out to dinner, though there is nothing food-wise that should make this so. The author, who later went on to a bring the foods of every nation to people’s attention on his long-running Food Network series, holds nothing back in his description …
A fast and easy read. Tony was a gifted author who writes simply and with humor.
Like his TV shows, this gets to the nitty-gritty of restaurant life from a master chef’s perspective!
A great biography from a man who died too soon. Sure, the pro kitchen can be horrible sexist but he’s pretty up front about it. Great stories. Mafia connections and cooking that will make you want to up your kitchen game.
Written well, at times humorous, at times the situations make you think. Great read!
Very sad that every time I go to a restaurant I am made to think of what goes on behind the scenes in the kitchen. I can only hope the information is not true because it is pretty gross. I have not finished the book yet but I am almost at the end.
I felt like I could see him talking while reading this book. Sad to know he is gone. He was so talented.
Enjoyed it. A somewhat unsettling tour through restaurant culture.
Oh god… do I miss this man!
Written by a troubled man.
I enjoyed every page of Anthony Bourdain’s ” Kitchen Confidential”. It was a real eye opener. There is a lot of passion, determination and hard work in the operation of a world class restaurant kitchen. Very enlightening.
If you enjoy books about food, culture and the slightly weird, read this book. Anthony Bourdain, a chef who was known for traveling the world and immersing himself in the food cultures of a multitude of countries, spent many years eating some of the strangest and most bizarre foods ever. With a stomach of iron and a large serving of wit, Bourdain …
Amazing book about the restaurant business. You might not go to brunch again!
Enjoy the late Bourdain’s acerbic wit and insights.
This was a look into the little seen “backstage”world of a chef that I didn’t expect. I was hooked from page one. Mr. Bourdain was a natural story teller. I will miss his unique style and unflinching honesty as well as all the hilarious stories he never had the opportunity to tell.
Loved the book. Very informative, easy to read. Anthony was a fascinating man and he had a lot to teach us. The book felt raw and real.
Many decades ago, I waited tables while going to college. My experiences were quite different than those entailed in this book. It was an interesting look at working in a big city restaurant!
A look into the kitchen. Wonderful & entertaining.
