The other founding fathers seem very distant to me but this biography made John Adams very easy to relate to. His relationship with this wife, his relations with other people, his seriousness of purpose that worked less well than Franklin’s social ease felt comprehensible in a way that is generally lacking in other biographical works.

This makes us understand John Adams as a real person with a wife at home that he leaves often to go to Philadelphia etc to create a new nation. The book is probably to long and there are places where it drags. Nevertheless, it’s an interesting human story and an important history through the eyes of a major participant in the forming of our nation.

A fine example of thorough research in the service of capable nonfiction storytelling. I was so engrossed in the story, I learned a lot while not even knowing it.

David McCullough’s John Adams and 1776 should be required reading for every American and anybody wishing to be an American. I like to think of myself as well educated, but after reading these two books, I am embarrassed by how much of our history I have forgotten.

The book is very informative and covers in depth this very important time in our country and the very early history of our republic. It is also a view into the Adams personal lives.

About historical figures and events. They flow as if you’re reading a novel. Has a new appreciation for John Adams as a person and as an idealist.

Brings John and Abigail Adams to life. Don’t be afraid of giving this wonderful biography a chance.
