Wonderful insight into founders of our country– the incredible effort and dedication it took, the different characteristics and strengths (and weaknesses) of the founders, their relationships with each other– conflicts and later resolutions.
A much different perspective not only on Adams and his wife, but also on Washington and Jefferson. …

A great book on John Adams and a lot of history of that time. I was not familiar with. It was fascinating to know the history and the relationship between him and Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin and their role in forming the government.

David McCullough is one of my favorite biographers and he kept me interested even through Adams’ many interminable trips on horseback between Quincy and Philadelphia. John Adams was far more than just our 2nd president. He acted as the conscience for many in the Continental Congress, and was the person who recommended Washington to be the general …

David McCullough’s monumental work on the incredible life of America’s second president is more than just inspirational; it is a true work of art. The way in which the author weaves historical facts together transforms dusty history into a rollicking, action-packed adventure that could hold its own against any Hollywood blockbuster. This book is what started me on my own personal journey to more fully understand American history and my wife and I have made it required reading as we’ve home schooled our three sons.

A wonderfully crafted piece of history. Mr. McCullough is a master storyteller, which in addition to his extensive research and source work makes his history books all the more fascinating. If you have never read much about America’s second president, this is a fantastic place to begin. From his early life to college, to teaching, to the revolution, and on toward the twilight of his life and career, Mr. McCullough brings to life a vastly important part of our history. Some would argue a part of history that we need desperately as a country now. He also makes apparent how important Abigail Adams was to Mr. Adams and thereby our country, and how their relationship helped forge America’s future. If you have not had a chance to read any of Mr. McCullough’s works, or if you have just not read much about President Adams, I highly recommend John Adams as a great place to start.

David McCullough is one of our finest writers today. His ability to recreate for us the time of our history, that most of us have the barest glipse of from high school text books, is as engaging and informative as can possibly be for modern readers to have a clear view of where we have been and how we have come where we are.

Very readable history of John Adams and many others of his era. His wife was shown to be very influential for the time and she was very supportive of him. All historic characters were well portrayed.

No one writes quite like McCullough. These doorstop tomes read so easily, silkily. He gives the reader a master class in early American history.

This brilliant author has so spoiled me with his incredible “I am there in this historical moment” style that I find most other historical authors wanting! (Doris Kearns Goodwin is one of the few exceptions.). McCullough books can be read again and again so may never leave your shelves for the donation box! His words just paint pictures in your mind so readily that you can almost visualize John Adams interacting with our nation’s other Founding Fathers, family and political friends and acquaintances. (I particularly felt like I was “in” John and Abigail’s heads as they write to each other about Benjamin Franklin’s diplomacy style in France and their thoughts about Thomas Jefferson.) The reader is with John Adams, his wife Abigail and their children as they forge their lives pre and post Revolutionary War including, of course, his Presidency and throughout his retirement years on his farm. You ‘feel’ John and Abigail’s personal strengths, determined wills, mutual respect and love for each other and their family in McCullough’s brilliant pages. Highly recommended five star book!
