I think this series is shaping up to be a top read of the year, if not my favourite fantasy series of all time. The book is just jam packed with plot AND great characters. Every single character is complex and layered, unique and wonderful. Shanti has been the hope of her nation almost since she was born and that pressure, alongside seeing so many of her people slaughtered so that she might live, has her riddled with self-doubt and insecurity. Not to mention a soul filled with pain, sorrow and suffering. Yet she still manages to strategize, plot, fight and kick ass brilliantly.
I enjoyed getting to know Cayan a little more in this book. He was still very much an enigma at the end of Chosen, and I suspect we will find out a lot more in Shadow Lands, book #3 of The Warrior Chronicles. I adored his quiet broodiness, his utter conviction of right and wrong and his sheer determination to support, defend and care for Shanti, even when she tries to stand in isolation.
Saunders, Rohnan and the Honor Guard boys all add facets to the story that I didn’t even know I needed. Their humour, their insight, their bravery in the face of terror and their love for Shanti made me laugh with joy, cry with sorrow and feel every just about every emotion between. I don’t know how she does it but K.F. Breene writes characters that feel so real you expect to find them standing next to you. It doesn’t harm that many of them have a wicked sense of humour, perfect for adding levity back to the story following some of the darker, more emotionally draining moments. And if all else failed then Shanti’s horse could be relied upon for a little comic relief!
Hunted is not a stand alone book and the series must be read in order for the story to be followed and understood. I’m totally kicking myself for not having read this series before because it absolutely kicks ass and is amazing. I can not recommend this series highly enough.
‘Hunted’ is book two in K.F Breene’s The Warrior Chronicles. Told in multiple POVs. Book one must be read prior to this.
With rumours of a man with similar features to Shanti known as “The Ghost”, she follows the leads to a camp where she hopes her lost “chance” and adopted brother Rohnan might be. Rohnan is not the only prisoner she rescues, now a superior officer know as “The Hunter” is after them. They are going to need help to escape him and only one man comes to mind, but will he forgive Shanti for leaving him in the middle of the night.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. So far this series has been fantastic. Fast paced, action-packed, full of mystery, angst and humour. I love how Ms Breene is able to bring such vivid worlds to life with engaging characters. I also enjoyed that even though the characters were in dire situations there was still witty banter between them.
Shanti has been a character full of mystery ever since she was discovered and rescued by Sanders and her Honor Guard. She has been a little shut off and isolated, though she has helped out and opened up a little to the Westland people she still kept very much to herself. But after seeing they way she acts around Rohnan you get to see a very different side to her. She is still the strong, fearless “chosen” warrior but there is a more likeable and softer side.
Getting to see more of Cayan and Sanders was excellent, these men are still just as mysterious and intriguing to get to know. They both put on such strong fronts but they are both big Teddys.
I am loving this series and can not wait to see how things turn out for these characters.
Hunted
(The Warrior Chronicles #2)
by K.F. Breene
Our Chosen has run from the safety of the town to protect them and continues her journey. She finds a fellow survivor but he is a prisoner. The book is full of action, adventure, mystery, magic, and skilled fighting! They find another with gifts even stronger and much different than their own and they must protect the old man. She realizes she must reunite with her power’s mate and go back to train him. This is one busy and well traveled, but thrilling ride! Her horse is hilarious! It’s as mean as she is!
While this book was thoroughly packed with action and was, as a result, such a quick read to barrel through, it wasn’t quite up to the same level as the first.
My first complaint, if I can convey it without spoiling anything, was that we met someone from Shanti’s past, but in such a way that I found mightily confusing. She referred to this character in such a way that I found myself referring back to the first book to clear up their relationship. With no explanation given, it seemed more emphasis was put on this relationship than we were led to believe, and it wasn’t really cleared up until midway through the book.
My second complaint was simply how painful the slow burn remains to be throughout this book. I so desperately need there to be some give between Shanti and Cayan… anything.
Still, the story holds strong, and I’m eager to jump into book 3.
Shanti (the main character) has been thrown so many titles and has been under so much pressure since long before she can remember and she must get past these feelings in order to save the world and everyone she loves. When her power combines with Cayan’s, things get explosive! This was an edge of my seat, could not put it down story and I will be a mess until the next installment!!! I am a big fan of K.F. Breene’s books but this is by far my favorite series yet! There is something for everyone and it is jamb packed with action, sexual tension, adventure and absolutely hysterical characters who I cannot get enough of! There are so many great one-liners and banter throughout the story. Her characters are diverse but they all share a common goal, survival and revenge! The world that she created is one we can all relate to.
I am kind of hating K.F. right now! I know, that’s terrible but this series is killing me in anticipation! When I was finally able to read Hunted I thought yeah! I’ll get some answers, which I did but I was left with even more questions!
