The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. Consuming soy is associated with prolonged survival. Worried about heart disease (the number 1 killer in the United States)? Switch to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which has been repeatedly shown not just to prevent the disease but often stop it in its tracks.

This is a book that will take your time and concentration to read and fully understand. It’s not about immortality but rather more about what you should be doing to prevent an early or premature death. It’s not a fast read but it is well-paced and you won’t get bogged down by terms and definitions. The overall content is excellent and the writing is superb. I highly recommend this book.
How Not to Die was written by Dr. Michael Greger and takes a look at all the foods that are scientifically proven to prevent/reverse disease. I bought this book on a Kindle Daily Deal because it was cheap and sounded interesting. That said, I have a PhD. in anthropology with a sub-specialty in medical anthropology and was prepared to find the book full of plenty of ‘woo woo’ pseudo-science. I was pleasantly surprised. Dr. Greger has done an impeccable and balanced job of pulling potentially useful information from 1000’s of top notch medical studies and boiling things down to something the lay person can understand. Further, where there is limited evidence of some common remedy being good for this or that disease, he says so. I’ve made modifications on my diet based on this book and am already seeing positive results.
Verdict: An interesting read with useful suggestions on how to modify your diet to limit your disease risks.
A gem of a book with amazing health insight and advice.
Want to live off meds? Then read this book sooner rather than later.
For a health book heavily focused on nutrition it was interesting and very informative. He incorporates science and studies to back up his book, but it is very approachable for the average person. Some parts were a bit repetitive/felt a bit like propaganda is why I give it 4.
This book is a must-read and a brilliant read for anyone who is interested in improving the quality and length of their life. Dr. Greger is remarkable in his distillation and interpretation of thousands of scientific studies (he studies them so you don’t have to), and brings the most important information on how you can improve your health, extend your life, and even reverse many debilitating diseases, from cardiovascular disease to type two diabetes, and how you can prevent many diseases that we think of as inevitable.
Nutrition facts.org is his website, where he shares vast amounts of information, for free. This book brings a fantastic amount of information to you, and it’s presented in a very easy to read fashion.
Dr. Greger is a great humanitarian and brilliant communicator, and he will enlighten and amaze you with his prescription for a better life.
