New York Times bestselling author, K. Bromberg, brings you a romance about love, forgiveness, and living every day to the fullest. I know finding and signing a military vet to the agency is a long shot–but it’ll be good press just letting him try out. That’s what I tell my family, rather than admit I can’t get the letter he wrote us five years ago out of my head. But what I tell the bartender … of my head.
But what I tell the bartender in his hometown is a lie. I know veterans protect each other. So I pretend to be a graduate student.
Sparks. Flame. Fire. I accidentally got in too deep.
I didn’t expect to develop feelings for Gunner Camden.
And there’s no way I can admit to my lies now, not without destroying what we share. So I’ll keep faking it.

There are two versions of me: before, and after deployment.
Back then I was a screwup kid. I’d lie, cheat, and steal my way out of everything. My only love was baseball.
After I started fighting, I found out there had been another path for me. One that involved my dream. But by then I had seen too much.
The old me was dead, so I put my dreams to rest, too.
Then Chase Kinkade walks into my bar and reminds me that life is meant to live. No regrets.
Fresh. Happy. Hopeful. I can start to see a new dream, with her.
But sometimes things are too good to be true… and dishonesty is the one thing I can’t forgive.
Are you ready to fall for the Kincade sisters and then men who love them in K. Bromberg’s sexy, contemporary, sports romance series? These books can all be read as standalones, but you’ll enjoy reading them as a series!

It all began with a letter. And I was immediately swept up in what could be. Part sports story, part military but totally filled with fun, healing and love.
Chase and Gunnar are magical; two incomplete souls who have found each other in the most serendipitous kind of way. She’s type A all the way, he’s laid back and nursing more than a bit of survivors guilt. But not in a destructive way, just straight up honest and kind. The kind of guy that Chase isn’t used to and isn’t sure what to do with.
As happens in romance, things start off simple but then feelings develop, secrets are learned and hearts are broken. But the journey is much more wonderful than it is complicated. And things like red converse, daisies and dancing in the rain with spark a smile from this reader, as memories of this wonderful love story are remembered.
I came into this book without having read the rest of the series. I’ll go back and read them, but I can’t imagine any of them will stay with me like Chase and Gunnar will. 5+++ stars!
I remember when I read the first book in the series, I said that Hunter and Dekker are my favorite K. Bromberg couple. They were dethroned by Chase and Gunner. Book four in the series, can be read as a standalone, but it would be a lose not to meet the whole family. Chance Kincade is the youngest of four sisters. They all work for their father as sport agents, Chase being the most driven and successful of them all. But her hard work comes from a loss not many can understand, loosing her mother at a young age, she’s coping with it by burying herself in work. She had her heart broken by Finn Sanderson both romantically and career wise, so she’s not interested in dating. As a thank you letter comes to her office, five years later then sent, from a former basseball pitcher whom entered the military, she’s making it her mission to find him.
Ryan “Gunner” Camden is finally settled. After loosing his dream as a pro athlete, and surviving a bomb attack overseas, while serving his country, he’s struggling with survivals guilt. Until one day a girl walks into the bar he opened in memory of his friends dream. She’s turning his world upside down in a good way. How their love story plays out, I’ll let you read and find out.
When a letter arrives 5 years late to Kinkade Sports Management (KSM) an idea is seeded in Chase’s mind and she decides to see if she can make it work. The letter is from a promising super fast baseball pitcher, declining an invitation to meet with them. Ryan Camden could have potentially had an amazing career in MLB but he walked away from it never to be heard from again.
Chase sets out to find Ryan Camden. She is curious about what became of him and when she discovers he is now an ex-veteran she sees an opportunity to organise a fundraising baseball game which would be great PR for KSM and might still land him the career dream he was chasing. Her investigation skills lead her to Destiny Falls, the last known place of residence.
Destiny Falls is not a big town so surely it can’t be hard to find him? After scoping things out she ends up in the local drinking spot – FU-BAR. Someone here is bound to know him but she quickly becomes distracted with the gorgeous bartender and owner, Gunner. She knows that part of job is to chat to and charm his patrons but there is definitely a connection there that is more than him playing a role.
‘She owns my attention the minute she walks into the bar. A new face in this bar gets noticed pretty damn quick to say the least. The town is small. The bar patrons are regulars. She’s not one of them.’
Chase soon discovers there is so much more to this guy. He is a complete giver, he is very aware of how lucky he is to be alive and tries to make life a bit better for the families of veterans who have suffered loss. He volunteers at a local community centre and tries to financially support the families of guys he lost in combat. He is open and honest and makes Chase feel like the only woman in the room, each time she is around him.
‘I said kissing is overrated.’ Words I used to think were true until Gunner. Until his kisses that feel like a slow, sweet seduction, pulling you in, dragging you under, becoming a temptation like I’ve never known.’
Chase’s time in Destiny Falls is limited and despite making this clear to Gunner, they fall head over heels into a beautiful relationship. He is everything she never knew she was missing in life and being with him is so easy. I think that both of them could imagine a future together, even if it’s a long distance. Surely they could make it work?
‘I stare at him, at this incredible man, and wonder how my whole world just narrowed in such a short time and became solely about him. My world used to have no beginning or ending point but now when I look at him, he’s both of those to me.’
Chase’s reason for being in Destiny Falls brings her back to reality though, along the way she has told a few white lies to Gunner to protect herself from people knowing her reason for being there. The one thing he will not tolerate is anyone being deceitful and when things go tits up she feels the full impact of what that means. I knew things were going to eventually implode and I was reading as fast as I could and also trying not to because I wanted everything to stay all sweet and happy 🙂
‘If I was smart, I’d walk away right now. This man is too good. Too kind. Too genuine. Too thoughtful. Too …. Everything. I. Don’t. Deserve. Him. But I’m not smart.’
I really enjoyed this story, Gunner is super cute and I love that he was so into Chase. I like how her attitude on life was changed when she saw things through Gunner’s perspective. A fabulous page turning read.
The intimate moments are so freaking delicious!!! Gah this was probably the best Kincade sister story!!!
Chase finally gets her story and boy is it a doozy! She’s on a hunt for someone named Ryan. She doesn’t know why she is drawn to this letter that was sent to the family but she can’t let it go.
Gunner is a war vet. He doesn’t want attention and is shy about praise. He really is a good guy that will have all readers swooning.
It’s page after page of hotness that will literally suck you into the story. It touches your heart and helps heal it all in the same words. This is by far one of this authors best books!
“The best relationships are the ones you never saw coming.”
Hard to Lose revolves around the youngest Kincade sister, Chase. When KSM receives a letter from a baseball player that has been lost in the mail for six years, she’s determined to find him to generate good publicity for the agency. When she lands in Destiny Falls, she finds more than she bargained for when she falls for a hot bartender on her first night in town.
“Love isn’t something you set out to achieve. It’s something that happens unexpectedly.”
Chase has watched her sisters find love but remains determined to avoid relationships and concentrate on her career. She’s driven, ambitious, and smart, but when she falls, she falls hard. I did get frustrated with her unwillingness to share the truth with Gunnar and believed she let her deception build until it became an unnecessary obstacle in her relationship with him.
“I don’t know what is up or down anymore since you picked up my world and tilted it off its axis. All I know is it’s not the same without you in it.”
Gunnar is a hero—literally. He’s a broken man with so many demons, but he’s chosen not to let those demons rule his life and heart. He tries to live his life to the fullest with no regrets even though he is reluctant to give his heart. He’s the most giving, selfless character with heart of gold. I loved him so much.
“They told me that somehow, we—you and I—were better together. That somehow, our two broken and jagged halves made one incredible whole.”
Given the heavy subject matter at times, this story had a lighthearted feel. Watching Chase and Gunnar get to know each was a delight. Their banter was fun and absolutely charming and the heat they generated was hot. Even though they both were a little bit broken, being together gave them both a sense of peace of helped them to heal.
Hard to Lose is an emotional read that’s full of life, love, humor, lies and deception. The epilogue was truly perfection and I have loved each and every book in this series. Now bring on Finn Sanderson!!
How can I possibly find the words to describe how much I loved this book? I knew it was going to be good as I’ve loved every book in the series, but this one blew me away!
Chase is the youngest Kincade sister and while the other three Kincade women have found love, she instead has found more career goals to reach. I liked her more than I expected to, especially when she started to show her vulnerability and become a better version of herself.
Gunner owns and runs a bar he opened in honour of his military buddies. He’s a unicorn…gorgeous, sexy, humble, kind, selfless, a war hero, and the list goes on…basically the ultimate book boyfriend.
Their instant connection was indescribable, unexpected, intense, hot, and oh so sweet. Their story grabbed hold of my heart and didn’t let go while it took it to some incredible highs and heartbreaking lows.
Deciding to live in the moment with no regrets, their feelings quickly grow even as the impending expiration date on what they have looms. All the while, the lie she’s been hiding behind threatens to ruin everything!
The angst may have been absolutely heart shattering, but wow, the beautiful, heart singing ending made it all worthwhile.
K. Bromberg took this sports romance series of standalones and kicked it up a couple of notches by adding in small town and military romance facets…definitely my fave of the series!
This book definitely is up there with the best of the best! This is the reason why I read. Why I fall. Why I beg for more. It’s simply AMAZING in every way. It was full of breathless, emotional, heart stopping and swoon worthy moments that you’ll never forget. K. Bromberg delivered again and I’m hooked!!!
HARD TO LOSE is the fourth instalment in K. Bromberg’s contemporary, adult PLAY HARD erotic, romance series focusing on the Kincade sisters who work for the family owned Kincade Sports Management (KSM). This is youngest sister Chase Kincade, and US Army Vet/bar owner Ryan ‘Gunner’ Camden’s story line. HARD TO LOSE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Ryan and Chase) HARD TO LOSE follows the building romance and relationship between Chase Kincade, and US Army Vet/bar owner Ryan ‘Gunner’ Camden. Several years earlier Ryan Camden had a promising baseball career but a night of drinking influenced by a need for revenge found Ryan enlisting in the US army where his life would be forever changed. Fast forward to present day wherein Ryan, now a bar owner in the small town of Destiny Falls, a town that caters to military families and retired vets, comes face to face with the woman that will break his heart. Enter Chase Kincade. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Chase and Ryan, and the potential fall-out as Ryan discovers that Chase’s visit to Destiny Falls was all a ruse.
Chase Kincade needed something to push KSM over the top. A letter arrived, five years too late, but a letter that pulled our heroine to look for the sender, a young man whose baseball career ended before it began. Only know a name and a destination, Chase heads to Destiny Falls where she will fall in love with a hero, who continues to pay for sins of the past.
The relationship between Chase and Gunner is predicated upon a lie. Chase is in Destiny Falls looking for a soldier whose chance at fame ended when duty called. Meeting Gunner gave Chase thoughts for a future but Chase knew her time in the small town would end when her mission was complete. Gunner never expected to fall in love but falling for Chase was easy as ‘apple pie’ 😉 but secrets revealed meant everything about his relationship with Chase was nothing more than a lie. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
The secondary and supporting characters include Chase’s sisters Dekker, Brexton and Lennox, as well as their father Kenyon Kincade; sports agent Finn Sanderson; army veteran Richard aka ‘Nix’. We get a quick glimpse at Ryan’s long suffering mother, and a step-father whose out to destroy the son he never wanted. Finn Sanderson’s story is next in HARD TO LOVE.
HARD TO LOSE is a story of family, friendships, betrayal and loss. A story of grief and suffering, love and understanding, forgiveness and happily ever after. The premise is emotional and heart breaking; the romance is provocative and captivating; the characters are broken, colorful, healing and lost.
Oh, I do think I have found my favorite book of this incredible series! And I have loved them all. But there is something very special about Hard to Lose as K. Bromberg gives us Chase Kincaid’s story. There is a tenderness I found exceptionally appealing in the way this baby sister with a competitive streak a mile-wide finds her match with the sexy Ryan Camden and the insane possibility of a life she never even thought she would want, let alone have.
Right from the start, I loved the touching way that Bromberg guides Chase to find the man behind the 5 years old letter that ended up on her desk one crazy day in Manhattan. You could sense the pull she felt reading Ryan’s decision to forsake a career in baseball while stationed in war-torn Afghanistan. And her trek to the small town of Destiny Falls, Virginia with that letter in hand is just the start of how she not only finds the love of her life in a man named Gunner but finds out more about herself and the pain she has kept hidden losing her beloved mother all those years ago.
For me, this love story was a reckoning of sorts for both Chase and Gunner as they face what the world has thrown their way. Both falling in love, real true love, for the first time while still battling demons and memories that drive them both. Then you add in the little white lie that Chase needs to use in order to find her mystery letter writer and keep Gunner at a close yet safe distance and you’ve got one complicated journey.
And once more I have to point out that the interactions with her wonderful father and her nosy, yet very supportive sisters add that perfect touch to make this book complete. That family dynamic is what drew me in at the beginning of this series and it remains an important component throughout. All the good-natured ribbing, the way they make their father a bit uncomfortable with their honesty, these Kincaid sisters are a force of nature I simply cannot resist.
In addition, Ellie, Nix, and a few good friends who are Chase’s clients as well add crucial support when needed. I was also surprised at how Bromberg has cleverly given us a glimpse of a kinder Finn Sanderson, setting us up for his book as the last in the series.
Both Gunner and Chase are phenomenal characters. Strong-willed with beautiful souls, I teared up a time or two as their selflessness gave back much more than they ever imagined as their buried grief became their oft-times driving force. Theirs is not an easy road as one little lie snowballs, especially when hearts that were determined to stay safely tucked away beat harder than ever for both Gunner and Chase. My own heart was beating double-time knowing that when Chase’s well-meaning plan was found out, there was no telling what Gunner might do or say. But with an ending worthy of a few squeals of joy and an epilogue that is beyond touching, I realized that love truly can conquer all and that Hard to Lose is my new favorite in this unforgettable and exquisite series.
5 big stars!
I adored this story about Gunner and Chase. The background on Gunner was very emotional at times. It shows you how he became the man he is today. Chase was unexpectedly knocked off her feet when she landed in Destiny Falls. She’s looking for veteran Ryan Camden. But she has to be smart about asking questions about him because this is a small military town and they protect their own. She’s advised to go to the local bar to help find her guy. When she goes, she is utterly taken by the charming and handsome bartender Gunner. They develop and instant chemistry that confuses Chase. She never gets smitten with men. And little by little her reason for being in Destiny Falls doesn’t seem that important. This is such a great love story. Two people who help each other find a love they never knew they needed. Gunner and Chase are sweet, funny, and sexy together. This series is exceptional and I’m glad that we get one more book to add to it. I can’t wait for Finn’s story. Will he be able to redeem himself? Kristi, once again to killed it!
Bromberg helped me find that piece of heart I never knew was missing. Hard to Lose breaks every rule emotion tells us to follow. Chase and Gunner give the soul something to believe in. From missed chases, little white lies and heartbreaking dreams, love some how finds it’s way. Through the eyes of unfulfilled hearts comes a reason to hope. A captivating sentiment that stays with you even after you’ve reached the journey’s end.
Chase and Ryan..
A letter, written five years ago,by a young man forced to leave his dreams behind and face life in the service, lost in the mail all this time, finds its way into Chase Kincaid hands. Something compels her to find him, the need to know what happened to him, who he really is drives her to search.
She finds him in a town called Destiny Falls, but doesn’t realize it’s him, as his name is different. The attraction is instant, and mutual. In true K Bromberg style, this book is an un-put-downable story of two lives, very different people, who come from very different worlds. Sometimes, those people can make it work, sometimes they can’t. Chase and Gunnar (Ryan) have an amazing story. Be prepared
I loved the previous books so I was very excited to pick up Hard to Lose, let me just say Chase Kincade and Gunner (Ryan) Camden’s story was everything I expected and so much more. I was drawn in and captivated from the first page to the last line, this book ticked all my boxes and I highly recommend it to all romance lovers.
Chase comes across a letter from a solider that should have been delivered many years ago, it’s from a young Ryan Camden saying thank you for your interest in me but I have to decline your offer of acting as my agent and helping me make it in the world of baseball. This letter intrigues Chase and she decides it’s time to track down the man who in his youth has an arm any pitcher would love but when she comes across Gunner aka Ryan in a bar in the middle of nowhere it’s not baseball that springs to mind, she finds herself falling for the man she is instantly attracted too.
Gunner has built a life for himself that he is more than happy with but the stunning woman who walked into his bar intrigues him, the chemistry is sizzling and the attraction is instant but what will happen when Gunner finds out what really bought Chase into his bar that night …..
This book has all the feels, it’s an emotional read with just the right mixture of love, passion and angst, it’s a book that will certainly be on my best reads of 2021 because I knew from the first chapter that I was reading so every special, I knew from the start this story and it’s characters where going to stay with me long after I read the final words. Loved everything about this great read.
Chase Kincade is the last sister to get her story and it is so worth the wait!
Chase is goal orientated and straight forward about what she wants to accomplish. When she receives a letter 5 years too late she feels a pull to find out the mystery she can’t explain. It brings her to a small military town and to Ryan “Gunner” Camden. This man will make you swoon in all the best possible ways. His tale is so heartbreaking but what he does with everything that happened to him is just amazing. From the start they are drawn together but of course the secrets just pile up until Chase doesn’t know how to escape them.
These two were perfection together and may just be my favorite couple! Their backstories and the dates (all the festivals have me wanting to visit this town!) will have you devouring every page. All the feels with this book for sure!
I have loved this entire series and while the sisters stories might be told Hard to Love is coming and I can’t wait!
I was excited but also hesitant to read Chase’s story, because she’s the last of the four Kincade sisters we’re learning about, and then their series is finished. But she was also the most intriguing because she’s the youngest sister, and across the three books we’ve already gotten, we know she’s the most controlled and driven, the overachiever, who has lists for everything and goals she strives to meet. What exactly caused her to be this way?
Gunner may just be my favorite guy of all of them in this series! Each Kincade sister has found an amazing man, but there is just something about Gunner that really spoke to my heart. I’m sure it is the military aspect of it, because I was deeply entrenched in that life for ten years and I’ve been that military wife, raising a child while my spouse was deployed during wartime. So yeah, this one was more personal for me than the other books.
I really loved the way Kristy showed us the softer side of Chase. Behind closed doors, she didn’t have to be the driven sister all the time. She could really let her hair down with Gunner. She wanted to let her hair down with him. And for the first time in his life, Gunner truly let someone in, letting Chase see all the ugly parts of him, along with all of his goodness. And let me tell you, this guy is GOODNESS to the core.
In each of the books in this series, Kristy has written a very poignant scene between each sister and their father, Kenyon. I loved the first one and looked forward to each one as they popped up, and for me, the conversation between Chase and her father is my favorite one of them all. Very emotional as they all have been, but his advice to Chase was just perfect.
This book really, really tugged at my heartstrings. Very emotional, as they all have been, but this one just stands out to me. I loved seeing all the sisters, as usual, and I really loved the friends that Gunner has that are always there for him. And the kids!! Gah, the kids really hit me right in the feels!
So all through this series, we’ve been seeing the sisters all hating on Finn Sanderson, both for stealing clients, and for breaking Chase’s heart when they dated. We get to know more about that in little snippets here and there, which helped satisfy my curiosity a little, but I still have so many questions about their relationship. I wonder if Kristy will touch on it at all when she writes Finn’s story in Hard to Love.
5 star review Hard to Lose (Play Hard #4) by K.Bromberg
Having read the previous books in this series I couldn’t wait to read to Hard to Lose. I was riveted to the story Ms.Bromberg wove, from the first to the last chapter about Chase Kincade and Gunner (Ryan) Camden.
This book ticked all the boxes for me and I fell hard and fast for Gunner. When a letter from a soldier falls into Chase’s hands she feels an instant connection and decides to pursue it. Meeting Gunner under false pretense, Chase is shocked as she develops feelings for him.
The chemistry and attraction between them is hot and intense and is impossible to ignore. Unfortunately for Chase, the one thing Gunner cannot tolerate is deceit and once he learns that their blossoming relationship is based on a lie, all will be destroyed. Can Chase convince Gunner to give her another chance?
I loved this book, it brought out so many emotions and has angst, heat, passion and characters who are easy to engage with and who you cannot help but become invested in.
Chase is the most goal orientated, organized, accomplished woman I have read about and it is honestly amazing how well she sets goals and tackles them instantly, but at times it was frustrating watching her lose herself in work. She is highly competitive and is determined to make her family’s agency the best of the best. The youngest of 4 girls she feels that this sets her apart from her siblings, yet it only makes them worry about her having a life outside of work even more. Determined not to let their competition get the best of them she sets out to find a guy that wrote a letter years ago that only showed up recently, he was a phenomenal baseball player but enlisted in the military instead. Chase’s intentions seem shady, and I didn’t like she was going to use an ex-military guy’s past to further her career, but her heart was truly in the right place eventually, even if she never wanted to admit it at first. Gunner is ex-military, hasn’t had the best home life, struggles with survivor’s guilt constantly, but he is a survivor and that matters the most. He is genuinely a unicorn in the form of a down to earth, humble, kind, compassionate, and loving man who is perfection even with the scars inside and out. The chemistry between these two is instant but more importantly they have a connection that defies logic that they can’t seem to fight. I wanted Chase to be upfront with Gunner so many times because you just knew that it was only a matter of time before he found out her true intentions of being in town, but of course she didn’t. Chase changed herself just by being around someone so caring and selfless, for the better she went from selfish to loving without even noticing. I hated how she was yet another person to break a broken man, yet the way she helped heal his heart was beautiful.
I have yet to read a book by K. Bromberg I have not enjoyed immensely. Chase and Gunner’s (Ryan) story is no exception.
The importance of learning to let ones self live after loosing a loved one is a lesson so few seem to actually realize. And not just in books but in life.
This beautiful story reminds us that we are still living. Life is right there for the taking all we need to do is open our eyes, our arms, our minds and our hearts.
The characters are both endearing and special. Gunner has that quality you never want to let go of if only he could see it to. Chase is strong, independent, and I love her curiosity. That need to get to the bottom of everything.
Often more times then not, given the chance, most people I believe will try to do the right thing. Have our hero and heroine found a way to make there situation better and still maintain this beautiful new…..
Well get the book the end is where it’s at!!
Have voluntarily left this review.
