It’s never too late for revenge in this thrilling novel by New York Times bestselling and award-winning crime master Max Allan Collins. In a small Midwest town, twenty-eight-year-old Krista Larson has made her mark as the youngest female police chief in the country. She’s learned from the best: her father, Keith, a decorated former detective. But as accustomed as they are to the relative quiet of … to the relative quiet of their idyllic tourist town, things quickly turn with Krista’s ten-year high school reunion.
With the out-of-towners holed up in a lakefront lodge, it doesn’t take long to stir up old grudges and resentments. Now a successful TV host, Astrid Lund, voted the “Girl Most Likely to Succeed”–and then some–is back in town. Her reputation as a dogged reporter has made the stunning blonde famous. Her reputation among her former classmates and rivals has made her infamous. Astrid’s list of enemies is a long one. And as the reunion begins, so does a triple murder investigation.
Krista and her father are following leads and opening long-locked doors from their hometown to the Florida suburbs to Chicago’s underworld. They just never imagined what would be revealed: the secrets and scandals of Krista’s own past.

Most of us can relate with attending a high school reunion. That’s what makes GIRL MOST LIKELY by Max Allan Collins is a riveting thriller—I could picture myself and my school mates in the throat-gripping pages of this book. An excellent read, I highly recommend it.

This is the first book in a series revolving around Krista Larson who has become the youngest female Police Chief in Galena, IL at 28 years old. It seems she is following in her father Keith’s footsteps as he recently retired at 58 from his position as Chief Detective at Dubuque PD. Krista has her father move back to the family home in Galena months after her mother passes away. Her parents had moved to Dubuque to be closer to work leaving the family home to their only child, Krista.
The story begins with the brutal crime of Sue Logan, a classmate preparing to travel from Clearwater, FL for her Class of 2009 Galena High School Reunion.
The story alternates with chapters written from view of the killer who happens to be planning the next murder. It seems that everyone is suspect when Astrid Lund, successful investigative reporter, is murdered while in town for the reunion. The girl voted “most likely” in high school seems to have made some enemies on her rise to fame.
Keith Larson contributes to the investigation using his contacts and experience to assist the small town police department in Galena. The story is a rollercoaster journey where identifying the killer is challenging. It is an exciting quick moving story making it a breeze to read. The only annoying parts were references to the Larson’s strong Danish ancestry which didn’t feel revalent to the story.

3.5atars rounded up. Ended quite abruptly and I wish the characters had been a bit more developed but I did like them and the book enough to read book 2 when it comes out!
The second half of this book was much better than the first. Interesting plot and characters. I found Krista’s relationship with her former boyfriend is sort of shallow and the constant name brand dropping got very tedious. I would have like Krista to have stepped up and taken charge a little more. I think she deferred too much to Daddy.
Who likes a good thriller? THIS GIRL!
Super fast-paced and loaded with the best kind of drama to keep the reader invested. It’s a quick read, but a good one. Girl Most Likely is what I call a “waiting room read” easy to pick up and put down. Enjoyable and one you’ll want to keep in your bag.
3 stars
This book switches back and forth from the third person to the killer’s point of view.
This book is about a ten-year high school reunion. Starring are the youngest police chief in the U.S. Krista Larson and her father Keith, a retired detective from a nearby town. They now live together in an old house in Galena, Illinois.
This is not a bad read; part mystery and part police procedural. It reminds me a great deal of a cozy. Something that bothered me about this book is that everyone was successful. Another reviewer commented on the lack of office workers and blue collar types. They are right. Where were the ordinary people?
The novel is fairly well written in a linear fashion, and the story idea was good but was not carried off well. This book also lacked the usual Max Allan Collins style. I forgot from time to time who had written the story, as it didn’t sound like Collins’ voice. While I found the novel somewhat interesting, it was overly trite and kind of blah. The reporter-type woman in the story was doing an expose on sexual abuse, but as she describes it, she is dismissing it at the same time. I felt that she wasn’t really invested in the subject.
I want to thank NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for forwarding to me a copy of this book for me to read and review.
