From New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Cassandra Clare comes an exciting new short story collection that follows Jem Carstairs as he travels through the many Shadow Markets around the world. Ghosts of the Shadow Market is a Shadowhunters novel. The Shadow Market is a meeting point for faeries, werewolves, warlocks, and vampires. There, the Downworlders buy and sell magical objects, … Downworlders buy and sell magical objects, make dark bargains, and whisper secrets they do not want the Nephilim to know. Through two centuries, however, there has been a frequent visitor to the Shadow Market from the City of Bones, the very heart of the Shadowhunters’ world. As a Silent Brother, Brother Zachariah is a sworn keeper of the laws and lore of the Nephilim. But once he was a Shadowhunter called Jem Carstairs, and his love, then and always, is the warlock Tessa Gray. And Jem is searching through the Shadow Markets, in many different cities over long years, for a relic from his past.
Follow Jem and see, against the backdrop of the Shadow Market’s dark dealings and festival, Anna Lightwood’s doomed romance, Matthew Fairchild’s great sin, and Tessa Gray as she is plunged into a world war. Valentine Morgenstern buys a soul at the Market and a young Jace Wayland’s soul finds safe harbor. In the Market is hidden a lost heir and a beloved ghost, and no one can save you once you have traded away your heart. Not even Brother Zachariah.

Follow Brother Zachariah AKA Jem Carstairs as he travels through Shadow Markets looking for answers. This is several stories in one book, each being in a different time of the Shadow Hunters universe. We get to look in on Tessa and Will, Clary and Jace, and Alec and Magnus. We also get to know some of the characters from the new Last Hours series. There was a few things here and there that make me feel like I was missing something in other books, but that probably just means I need to reread the ones I read years ago.
I read most of these as they released but grabbed the bind up for the two new stories.
The Lost World – This one was really heartbreaking and I am so stressed about what is in store for Kit and Ty and Livvy to come.
Forever Fallen – Loved this one so much. All the Jem and Tessa and Kit stuff was so good. And Jem reminiscing about Will hit me right in the feels. And Evil Jace is probably going to be a problem but he is also so so heartbreaking. Just seeing what Jace could have become is so hard to handle.
I love Jem, but I don’t enjoy Brother Zachariah as much, which affected how much I cared about some of these stories (although maybe that was the effect of the co-authors). However, I appreciated that the stories were in chronological order, which definitely helped me remember what was going on in the Shadowhunter timeline. Although that also meant I didn’t care as much about the first few, because I feel like I’ve spent the last few years being taunted by characters from the still-unpublished The Last Hours. And unfortunately, the last few stories have really just made me more excited about The Wicked Powers, and god only knows when we’re gonna get that.
But here’s my ranking of the stories in order of preference:
The Land I Lost
The Wicked Ones
Son of the Dawn
Forever Fallen
Through Blood, Through Fire
The Lost World
A Deeper Love
Learn About Loss
Cast Long Shadows
Every Exquisite Thing
Since I’m a big fan of Jem this, my opinion might be biased, in this book you’ll find ten short stories about Jem or father Zachariah and his adventures in the shadow market on his quest to find the lost Herondale, and the introduction of new characters.
There’s love, some action and questions about some characters destination, can’t wait to read more about Ty, Kit, Jem, and the little ones.
A must read of you love the Shadowhunters world.
First, I so love this cover. James (Jem Carstairs) aka Brother Zachariah.
I really loved that every short story had Jem as MC. Really had love that caracter in The Infernal device series. We follow him in these short stories from the begginging of the 1900 to 2015.
My fave short was the last one Forever Fallen wich take place after the events of Queen of Air and Darkness.
I would recommend having read all the TMI, TDA and TID books before reading these short stories. Cause of some spoilers.
If your fans of the Shadowhunters world, this book is defenitly worth it.
I’m not objective, since I’ve read all of the books in the series, and know the characters like the back of my hand. However, I loved this book, and all of the stories weave into one excellent read – if you’re into angels and vampires and Shadowhunters.
