When 26 year old Reese accepts a position as a grad assistant, she has no idea an unpleasant encounter with a student will lead to the discovery of what she calls “the trifecta”: fine, intellectual, and a little bit rude – three qualities she finds irresistible in a man. She has no intention of doing anything with that discovery – nothing long term, at least. But everybody knows what happens to … to best laid plans.
Jason is a grown man. 28 years old, seasoned and scarred by his real-life experience in the world, he’s at Blakewood State University to finish his degree and move on. The last thing he’s interested in is the female population on campus… but sexy, infuriating Reese might be a notable exception.
This isn’t a story of opposites attract.
More like counterparts clash.
Neither of them is afraid to do battle, and neither is willing to back down. Love and war, win or lose… somebody’s gonna end up getting schooled.

Thank you black booktube for making me finally pick up a book by this author. Ya’ll really came through for a girl. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Reese and Jason. Can I just say how Jason was completely my type of man and just the way Christina C. Jones wrote him had me wanting to get my act together and find my own Jason out in the world. He was confident, smart, educated, witty, didn’t take any crap, and knows how to treat a woman. I loved his no nonsense attitude and when he detected changes in Reese’s mood he didn’t overlook it and addressed it by talking and opening up like adults. I friggin loved this book. Reese was good as well. She knew what she wanted and realized what she didn’t. While she wanted to play like she didn’t have this obvious attraction to Jason, I like that she took that risk with him. He was able to sift through her emotions, called her out on things, and was so great about being supportive, protective, and there for her.
Getting Schooled was a solid book that has got me giddy for black love and I can’t wait to read more books by her very soon.
Another win from our queen CCJ! She writes the type of stories I love to read: romantic, funny but at the same time dealing with serious topics, and above all realistic. Her characters always feel like real people, and I love that!
I don’t like new adult romances, so I was hesitant to start this book. I was really glad I did.
Jay and Reese were both in their late 20’s. Their back and forth initially drove me crazy, mostly because Reese seemed so irritated. Their attraction was off the chart. I was glad when their back and forth became more teasing.
Both Jay and Reese had issues. I liked the way Reese handled the situation after they accidentally ran into each other and she learned more about Jay’s life. They supported on another through everything that came at them.
I was also glad the characters were not thugs, gangsters, strippers, etc. I also liked that they weren’t millionaires or billionaires.
I also like that the book included a mature romance. That relationship showed age ain’t nothing’ but a number. The book focused on family and friendships. Good relationships and bad. I listened to the audiobook and thought the narrators did a great job.
I am looking forward to reading the next book, “Pulling Doubles”.
4.5 Stars I really enjoyed this. The angst was really low, the heat and the connection between Jason and Reese was high and although my only complaint was the ending was really abrupt, this was pretty much the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon. With an author you enjoy and Sean Crisden’s smooth voice in your ear. Yes please. TW: PTSD, Loss of a Parent, grief, war time mentioned, male MC has a partial prosthetic leg.
The Banter!
While grading papers as a graduate teaching assistant, Reese can’t help but practically swoon for J Wright’s intellect and skill but in when she literally bumps into him barbed words fly…but so do sparks! Jason is focused on completing his degree so he can put the skills he learned in the army to use, but there’s just something about Reese that he can’t overlook.
I absolutely loved the banter between these two; it had a nice bite but never any cruelty and was the perfect foreplay their deliciously steamy sexy times! I also loved the discussions and portrayals of PTSD, amputees, and grief.
I listened to the audio and the dual narration was perfect! Each character sounded unique in both voices and the tones used for the banter and emotional scenes were so engaging!
I’m moving right on to book 2!
Cute romance with real life situations. Loved the banter between the main characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this story but couldn’t get over a mother and daughter dating a father and son. How does that work if both couples married? Other than that, LOVED it!
