MY REVIEW:
I’m behind schedule thanks to a family member’s unexpected gallbladder removal, having to help my daughter with a birthday party since her hubby couldn’t and lifting the kids because he can’t.
Why am I mentioning all of this? Well I tease the son-in-law, that he, and many other men need to women up all the time. He cannot deal with pain. My father couldn’t either. Yet we have a slew of men who will deal with excruciating pain in horrific conditions as soldiers. Then when they come home from serving their country, we treat them like crap. I think more of them than the lumps sitting on the couch who have hang nails. Now, that I have that out of my system, on to my review.
Kaye is masterful at connecting the reader to subjects which are sensitive. Depression, suicidial thoughts, PTSD all come from many things and hit different people at different times for different reasons. We know it is a chemical reaction in the brain. We know there are triggers, We know there are things which can help such as medicine, talking, food, exercise, etc. Sometimes when you are that depressed taking that first step is difficult. Sometimes all it takes is a friend. One you never expected to step out and call you on your shit.
Kaye is brilliant at bringing two broken people together and allowing them to teach each other how to heal themselves. It’s difficult for a man, any man to admit they need help, especially Army Ranger, Billy Parrish. He should have known when he started to feel more than brotherly love for Shayna Curtis that he was going down. Again, Kaye has this way to build the connection, the burn between characters to an inferno. From laugh out loud moments to where is the fan – I need to cool off steamy sections, Kaye keeps the reader riveted to the story.
Love this new series!
Holy Mixed Martial Arts!!! I am loving this series. I am learning things about returning Vets of military conflicts that I didn’t see before. I am gaining a deep respect for those that help vets to make it through each and every day. Thank you for your service isn’t enough. The men and women in uniform deserve so much more. Authors like Laura Kaye are doing amazing things. I devour her books for entertainment pleasure but keep coming back for the Ah Ha moments.
Billy Parish is a member of the WFC. It is one of the few ways he has to deal with his PTSD. He needs the explosive outlet to deal after a forced retirement to deal with survivors guilt. When his surviving ranger team mate Ryan asks him to put a roof over his sister’s head there is no way he can say now.
Billy knows he has some issues. Billy knows he won’t be easy to live with. What Billy doesn’t know is how he will deal with the feelings he has for Shayna when he is supposed to be protecting her not lusting after her.
Shayna has her own issues, but she has kept them to herself. She carries a guilt that is all consuming. That isn’t her only secret. She has crushed on Billy Parish for years. As far as she can tell it is a crush not reciprocated.
Shayna is moving to D.C. after being offered a job as photographer for the Washington Gazette. The plan is to stay with Billy for a long enough to get to know the area, find a place of her own and move on. She doesn’t want to move on. Billy doesn’t want her to move on. Communication is key, but it seems as if they have a broken lock.
This story is full of sexual tension. This story is full of eye opening revelations. Veterans of military conflicts continue to struggle long after they return to American soil. Billy is lucky in the sense that Shayna gets it. Shayna is supportive. Shayna could be everything if he let her in. Kudos to all the Shaynas out there.
The story’s ending is explosive. It is just what Billy needed to knock some sense into him. He finds the strength to confess his feelings. Even more important he stands by Shayna’s side, protective and caring. The heat, the confessions, the emotions, the deep love rocked my world. Billy and Shayna will make beautiful babies in the future. Hopefully the author will show us in another book.
Billy has agreed to let his friends sister Shayna move in to his place until she finds an apartment in DC. Shayna has had a crush on Billy since she was a teen. Both have secrets but through friends and getting to know each other they find friendship does work. Billy wants more but runs from the truth. When an unexpected tragedy happens they find that their souls are meant for each other.
This is such an amazing series. Filled with deep emotions and showcasing the healing power of love, Billy and Shayna’s story is sweet, passionate and realistic. This beautiful story will surely touch your heart. A wonderful book and an excellent addition to this series.
I am so in love with this series! Another winner! 5 Stars Amazing! Elizabeth @ Carolina Chic’s Read
Billy and Shayna become the soul soothing that each other needs! Billy takes the long road to get there too! There is a lot of laughter, chemistry and friendship in this book! Completely in love with this series!
This is the second book in the Warrior Fight Club Series, a series based around a fight club made up of former military, which helps them adjust to civilian life. An amazing concept, this series delves into alternative therapies that could be used to help our warriors adapt. This is Billy’s book, a former Army Ranger that was discharged due to injuries and is having a very hard time finding his place.
Billy is a strong Warrior, but he still has a lot of issues, that he seems to be avoiding, instead of dealing with. When his best friend, also a fellow Ranger that is still active duty, asks for a favor, he doesn’t hesitate. When his best friend’s little sister shows up, moving in with him while looking for her own place, his already strained coping mechanisms fall apart.
Shayna is a photo journalist. She has a brand new job with a DC news paper, and has relocated for that job. Staying with her older brother’s best friend (who she had a crush on as a teenager!) should be a huge help to her. But the old feelings she had for Billy are suddenly back.
Billy and Shayna are perfect together. Both have regrets in their pasts that haunt them. Both seem to ignore, rather than deal with the problems in their lives. And that almost costs them something amazing! This was another mind blowing story by an author that never fails to deliver a story that sticks with the reader.
Absolutely Wonderful! This series is OUTSTANDING! Love the way you get sucked into the characters, they are all well developed. Each one, has its own set of demons, wars and great qualities. In this book, we are faces with survivors guilt, what a powerful emotion. Everyone has their own way of dealing with it, until you are forced to reveal what is really eating you alive. With the quirky remarks and comebacks from Shayna, to the powerful looks from Billy, you feel everything these two are fighting for and against. Could not stop reading! AMAZING!!!
Fighting For What’s His is another great book by Laura Kaye, and an excellent installment in the Warrior Fight Club series. The story managed to blend the after effects of military discharge, and a classic best friends little sister, and the result was emotional and surprisingly laugh out load funny at times. Billy and Shanya were both characters that had their own personal issues, but were well developed and well rounded. I hope to see more of them in the future. I can’t wait for the next Warrior Fight Club book!
Love the continuation of this series!! The characters draw you in. You can feel the struggle they are going through. You want to fix their past so they can move on to their future!! Loved it!! Would recommend this book and series!!
Fighting for What is His is the second book in Laura Kaye’s Warrior Fight Club series and it is fantastic!
I loved the characters, loved the premise of having military warriors back home and having to reconnect into civilian life. So many come back and need to deal with issues from physical to emotional and finding a place where they are part of a group again is so important for so many.
Billy and Shayna are thrown together as she comes to live with him in a new city. Billy is doing Shayna’s brother a favor by letting her stay with him while she looks for her own place. Little did either of them know, but they needed each other for friendship and healing. The connection they made has brought them so much more than either could have expected.
Fighting For What’s His was another great story from Laura Kaye. This series is fantastic with just the perfect combination of emotions and physical connection. Between Shayna and Billy. I thought this story had alot of heart with a hot dose of sexiness. I could not get enough!
Anyone who knows me knows that “roomates to lovers” is my favorite trope. I enjoyed Billy and Shayna’s story as it was fantastic to see them battle their growing attraction to one another while also steering clear of one another due to her brother and his friendship with Billy. It gave this story a delicious, forbidden edge. I liked that both Shayna and Billy had residual guilt they had to get through in order to be together and were able to come back from the other side.
All in all, this was great and I look forward to more from this author in the future. Bravo! 4 stars! ~Ratula
What’s not to love about a wounded hero and the woman who helps him find himself and love again? Seriously, I am so enjoying this Warrior Fight Club series.
Fighting for What’s His is a bit different from the typical best friend’s little sister romance as both Billy and Shayna are a little bit broken. Billy due to his injuries and both Billy and Shayna due to survivor guilt.
Neither one expected to find love while living together temporarily. And neither one ever expected that the other was just what or who was needed in their life to truly bring themselves back from the self-flagellation.
I truly enjoyed Ryan and Shayna’s romance. It was a bit of a slow burn, and so worth the wait! I can’t wait for more in this series.
Laura Kaye has delivered another emotional, crazy-hot story. This is about Billy and Shayna. Billy is friends with Shayna’s brother and let’s her stay with him while she starts a new job and looks for a place to stay. Both of them feel survivor guilt for separate experiences. Laura really sheds light on the difficulties our vets have. I love that they have the WFC as away of being part of a “team” again and they can get their stresses out. I really loved Shayna’s use of colorful swear words. I felt the chemistry immediately and loved the ending with her brother. The scene when Shayna is walking in the cemetery broke my heart and when she thinks about what Dylan’s fiancé said to her…uggh tears!! I could not stop reading this story.
4 stars. This was a good book! Fighting for What’s His is the second book in the Warrior Fight Club series. This is Shayna and Billy’s story. Shayna has just moved to Washington, DC for a new job. Her older brother, Ryan, is an Army Ranger deployed overseas. Ryan’s best friend and former Army Ranger himself, Billy, has offered to let Shayna live with him until she gets settled and finds her own place. Shayna crushed on Billy over the years, but he has always thought of her as just Ryan’s little sister. He is surprised to find her all grown up. The two have instant chemistry and attraction when they meet again. They spend time together, become friends and, eventually, fall for each other. They both have some emotional baggage to work out before they will let themselves fall completely and be happy, but it all works out for them in the end.
I read the first book in the series and enjoyed it, but I enjoyed this one even more. This book was an easy, well-paced read. I really liked Shayna and Billy. They were a good couple who really adored each other. I enjoyed their chemistry and relationship development. I liked that Shayna was a photographer, and could identify with that because I am a former photographer myself.
This book still tackles some serious subjects, but it was a little lighter than the first book in the series, which was a welcome change. There was still emotional moments, but there were also lighter, happier moments. Both Shayna and Billy have been through difficult times and share some of the same feelings because of that. They recognize them in each other and that brings them closer together. I did think the conflict wrapped up a little too close to the end and would have loved an epilogue. Still, this was a good read.
Overall, Fighting for What’s His is my favorite book in the series so far. I am intrigued by the other characters in the Warrior Fight Club and I look forward to reading their stories too. Can’t wait to read more from Ms. Kaye in the future!
*arc provided in exchange for an honest review*
Two people who are innocently thrown together have more in common than they could possibly imagine. Grief plays a big part in both of their lives and it has consumed them and has given them a lonely existence where they are always alone.
Billy’s job as a Private Investigator enables him to be cloaked in darkness and secrecy while he investigates individuals indiscretions. He spies on people, and they don’t see him. He analyzes reports alone in his office; he goes on stake outs, alone in his car. He has very little interaction with people while working and he doesn’t even know his neighbors. Lonely and alone.
Shayna hides behind her camera lens taking pictures, only seeing what is directly in front of her. Her pictures tell a story so she doesn’t have to. She moved to DC to distance herself from her family and friends so she could start over and be alone with her grief. She has isolated herself from her past but she can never run away from it, and the same goes for Billy.
Shayna and Billy were destined to meet because they are happier and healthier when they are together rather than apart. The time was right for them to finally find the one person to tear down the walls and scare away the demons so they could live life to the fullest and never be alone again.
Billy seems to have his life in order. He works hard, plays hard and fights fierce. Despite the image he conveys, his wounds run deep. She’s the battle that he never saw coming and not sure he can live without. Shayna is the one woman that has him questioning his long term plans. She’s the beginning never imagined and the ending that he never wanted. Can he find the courage to conquer his demons and reach for the key to her heart? Fighting for What’s His delivers the steam a Laura Kaye tale. From heartache to second chances, it’s a gritty story filled with the emotion I’ve come to expect and that spark that I refuse to live without.
4.25 stars–FIGHTING FOR WHAT’S HIS is the second instalment in Laura Kaye’s contemporary, adult WARRIOR FIGHT CLUB erotic, military, romance series focusing on a number of retired military personnel who meet at the local WFC headed by Army Ranger Moses Griffin. This is twenty-six year old, professional photographer Shayna Curtis, and thirty-three year old private investigator and retired Army Ranger Billy Parrish’s story line. FIGHTING FOR WHAT’S HIS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Shayna and Billy) FIGHTING FOR WHAT’S HIS follows the forbidden romance between twenty-six year old, professional photographer Shayna Curtis, and thirty-three year old private investigator and retired Army Ranger Billy Parrish. Billy Parrish is a broken man; a physically and emotionally scarred Army veteran who has agreed to do a favor for his best friend Ryan Curtis, still on assignment in the Middle East. Enter Shayna Curtis, Ryan’s younger sister, and the woman with whom Billy will fall in love. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Billy and Shayna, and the potential fall-out as Billy is unable to come to terms with the demons that continue to ‘poke the bear’ as Shayna keeps secrets some demons of her.
Shayna Curtis is a strong-willed and independant professional photographer assigned to DC’s Washington Gazette. Needing a place to stay, Shayna’s brother Ryan calls in a favor for his sister, a favor that places temptation at arm’s reach for out story line couple. Shayna has lusted after Billy since the first time they met but as Ryan’s younger sister, Shayna was off-limits to the man with whom she would fall in love. Billy Parrish struggles with PTSD and the physical affects of the injuries received in an explosion, and needing an outlet to vent his frustrations Billy joined the WFC in order to work out his anger and aggression. Hoping to keep temptation at bay, Billy throws himself into the ring, not always considering the who, where or why.
The relationship between Billy and Shayna is one of immediate attraction; a forbidden romance between ‘best friend’s younger sister’ but an attraction that has been building for several years. The $ex scenes are erotic, passionate and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There are a large number of colorful and charismatic secondary and supporting characters including the members of the WFC: Marine Noah Cortez, Ranger Moses Griffin, Navy man Sean Riddick, Army nurse Daniela ‘Dani’ England, diving instructor Tara Hunter, MMA coaches John ‘Mack’ McPherson, Leo ‘Hawk’ Hawkins, and Colby Richmond. WE are introduced via Skype to Shayna’s brother Ryan Curtis, neighbor Reuben and his dog Ziggy, as well as several of Shayna’s co-workers at The Gazette.
FIGHTING FOR WHAT’S HIS is an emotional story of family, friendship, determination and strength. The premise is engaging, intelligent and edgy; the romance is spicy and hot; the characters are wounded, troubled, sassy and real. FIGHTING FOR WHAT’S HIS is an energetic and inspiring addition to Laura Kaye’s WARRIOR FIGHT CLUB that will captivate your attention from the start.
The much anticipated second book in the Warrior Fight Club series, Fighting for What’s His is here! And what a great book it is. I love Billy and Shayna! I loved this book. I love this series!! Can’t get enough.
Some first thoughts that sprang to mind with after finishing this book;
– UNPUTDOWNABLE
– BEAUTIFUL
– ENGAGING
– FUNNY
– ADDICTIVE
– LAURA KAYE AT HER BEST, YET AGAIN (I seriously haven’t read a single book I didn’t fall in love with and this one is no exception)
—
Most of you might know by now how insanely in love I am with Laura Kaye’s books so you can imaaaagine how I must’ve felt when I received my e-arc of this book on the Kindle yesterday! Seriously; I feel so very honored to be a part of her review-team for this year. That’s an experience I’ll always treasure. So thanks to Laura and Franci, I was able to read this e-arc, which I received in exchange for me leaving an honest review.

Let’s talk some more about this book then!
I was so so so excited to read this book and at the same time, that always makes me a bit scared beforehand as well. Scared it won’t be AS good as you’re hoping for. But there’s just no disappointing me when it comes to Laura’s writing like I was proven yet again by reading this book. This second book in the Warrior Fight Club series has stolen my heart, YET AGAIN, there’s no other way to put it. I’m lost in the best way possible. Where I fell in love with Noah and Kristina’s book, this second book sunk its claws in me as well, down to my core. This book is a phenomenal follow-up on Fighting for Everything and made me feel all the feels,. I laughed, I ached, I cried, I loved. There wasn’t a single thing I didn’t love about this book so let me tell you more about it.
Gun at the ready, he made for the bathroom, his free hand reaching the knob.
The door swung open on its own.
“Freeze!” he bit out.
Four things happened pretty much at the same time.
The woman screamed, jumped backward into the door, slamming it against the wall behind her, and dropped a pile of clothing to the floor.
And then the towel she wore around her chest came unknotted and swung open, baring every inch of her.
“Jesus fucknugget, Billy!” the woman screeched.
Our main characters are mesmerizing and interesting and loveable. Laura’s characters aren’t flawless and that makes them so realistic, so relatable and so extremely loveable. Both of our main characters are struggling with their pasts, both in a similar but also a completely different way. And it’s written down so beautifully I think; their struggles but especially the part when they start opening up to one another. I had no problem whatsoever of losing myself to these characters and their story. Special note: Shayne’s swearing IS THE BEST THING EVER!! And it’s so endearing seeing how Billy picks up on this and starts doing it himself as well, sigh. Laugh out Loud moments guaranteed!!
He inhaled a deep breath meant to calm, but it was a mistake. A big one. Because he got a lungful of peaches and sweetness that was all Shayna.
Shayna who was Ryan’s kid sister. Except…nope.
Not one goddamn thing about the woman standing next to him belonged to a kid. And he would know since he’d seen nearly the whole beautiful package.
“Hi,” he said. “Welcome to DC. Sorry I nearly shot you.”
I love the fact that Laura is so good at writing down not only a good romance and engrossing story-lines but that she’s so good at writing down such well-developed characters. And I mean, every single thing about them; the emotional, the physical and what I’m in awe of the most; the psychological part of their characters. It’s all so emotional and palpable and it gets you thinking and feeling so much at the same time.
“I was a fucking handful when I was growing up.”
Shayna grinned. “Oh, so you’re not a handful anymore?”
He gave her the strangest look, and then burst into a speechless guffaw.
Heat absolutely flooded Shay’s face. OH.MY.GOD. Did she seriously just asked him if he was a handful?
“That’s not what I meant!”
Grinning like a shithead, he turned the blender on high. One hand on his hip and the other on the blender, he yelled, “What? I can’t hear you!”
“You are a total ballbag, Billy Parrish!”
And not only the main characters are what make this book such a great read. It was sooo good to read about the ‘old gang’ again, all of the characters we got to meet in the first book in the series but also some new to us characters whom I came to care for so much as well! Laura makes you fall in love with all of her characters, main and minor ones and it makes me so greedy for more books. I seriously just finished this one and it left me craving more this instant. – thankfully at least 2 more books are planned in the series, yay.
The romance starts out as a bit of a forbidden one because Billy wants to maintain his distance since Shayne is his buddy’s ‘little sister’ and he promised to help her out. He struggles with wanting her and at the same time feeling like he isn’t good enough for her – that’s the PTSD part speaking, him thinking about Why he survived the war and a lot of his buddy didn’t.
“Why did I survive that shit when so many others didn’t? He’d asked himself that so many times over the past three years…
He’d seen Noah and Kristina together, and it was crystal clear that they were a match of the happily-ever-after kind. And Billy was happy that so many things had turned around for the younger man- Noah had fought for it and deserved it. But it was still a sucker punch to realize you might never find that for yourself
But their connection and chemistry isn’t to be ignored because holy canoly, do these two explode in the most beautiful of fireworks when they’re together! I loooved how they first kind of built their relationship by being friends. This made for a great base of a building romance. Their banter is so much fun to read about, and I had to laugh out loud on several occasions. The humor is such a great addition and in perfect balance, to the romance and emotions you come across throughout the book. And as always, the hotness level is off-the-charts-HOT, sigh.. Laura always knows how to write a perfectly developed combination of chemistry/romance developing/sex.
He was enjoying spending time with her. She was funny and made him laugh and she was just… really easy to be with. Having her around this weekend had made him realize just how much he was usually alone. And that it was actually nice to have some company around his place. It wasn’t going too far to say that he’d had more fun with her setting up her room than he’d ever had in this house since he’d moved in. Doing a whole lot of nothing special. And that was all due to Shayna
I’ve been a fan for years now and every time there’s a new series being released by this author, I’m in wonder. In wonder of the fact that she makes me fall even more in love with her writing. She keeps upping herself with every new book/series and that’s just unbelievably magical I think. the Warrior Fight Club is definitely on top of my all-time favorites list already. Fighting for Everything already made sure of that and having Fighting for what’s His added to the series now as well, makes sure it has an unmovable spot on top of that list.
Fighting for what’s his is a perfect blend of that really beautiful and addictive writing that only Laura can pull off, a truly mesmerizing story and the most realistic, relatable and loveable ‘tortured’ characters. Combine this with Laura’s talent of writing the most beautifully well developed romances, her knack for writing the Best HOT as F*ck sexy scenes and we have another WINNER! Another Laura Kaye book that shook my foundation in the best way possible. Another story and new characters I came to love so fiercely.
The next thing Shayna knew, Billy grasped and pushed her against the wall behind the door. He kissed her full on the mouth. It only took her brain the beat of one second to realize he’d given her exactly what she wanted and to kiss him back. And dear God, the way this man kissed. Like he’d been starving for it. His hands were holding her face and his body was pinning her to the wall and his tongue was tasting her mouth like he was desperate for her. “You can touch me, damnit,” he gritted out around the edge of a kiss. She buried her fingers in his hair, and he groaned.
It’s for the fact that I HAD TO GET SOME SLEEP at some point in the middle of the night – I seriously can’t function the day after without at least a decent amount of sleeping hours and I have a kid to take care of, so yeah, lol – otherwise I’d finished it in one sitting. UNPUTDOWNABLE! I cannot wait to read more of this author in general but this series has made its way into the core of my existence. I am so hooked on these books. It’s needless to say I’d recommend reading this book, this series and every Laura Kaye book in general, right?!
