Fighting for What’s His is book two in the Warrior Fight Club by Laura Kaye. It’s an emotional and passionate read. And, it can be read as a standalone.
What I like most about this series and novel is that the characters and their emotions are so really and believable.
Billy’s got issues, serious ones, but is trying to overcome them. The Fight Club for wounded Vets is a great place for him to work out his issues and be around others that know what he’s been through.
Shay is also recovering. She’s fun and sassy, impulsive in her decisions, but focused on her goal. I like her determination to be a photographer that makes a difference.
Billy and Shay are well matched. I enjoyed their romance. Their were times I wanted them to talk to each other, but in the end I understand the feelings that they have. Both feel that they should not be together for one reason or another, but they have this attraction and like each other. The romance was quick almost insta, but not fully.
Fighting for What’s Hi is a quick, easy, and engaging read. It was a delight to read and I’m looking forward to the next installment.

*Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy provided by Laura Kaye with the sole purpose of an honest review. All thoughts, comments and ratings are my own.
From the very first page, I was desperate for more of Shayna and Billy’s love story. FIGHTING FOR WHAT’S HIS will go down as one of my favorite Laura Kaye books. The emotion, struggles, and sexual tension will make this a certain re-read.
It’s hard for me to find much to say about these books other than I love the concept and the stories. I love the growth of the characters, the history behind each one and how they got to be where they are today. Laura Kaye never fails to write a emotional, sexy, compassionate story. She writes from the heart of these characters, you can feel their truth coming through the pages and seeping into your own heart and mind. There’s something about a Laura Kaye book that always makes you want to be a better person, that makes you want to go out and make a difference, to change the world for someone.
We met Billy in the first book from the series, Fighting for Everything and you just knew that his story was going to be an emotional power punch. Watching the two main characters, Billy and Shay fight through feelings of guilt side by side just makes your hear melt. Their guilt may come from different places yet in its essence it is the same. I loved when they finally opened up and gave themselves completely too each other, gave not only their hearts, their emotions, but also their fears is just everything in this book. I adored the connection between these two but I also loved them just as much separately.
Another of my favorite things about this series is the look into the lives of the members of Warrior Fight Club. I am so excited for each (please I need them all) of these characters books. I love the camaraderie, the care for one another, the ribbing. These members have gone through hell and back, heck some of them are still going through it, but together they find ways to live again, to enjoy life.
The only things that keep me from going a full 5 stars for this is that I felt like the end was a tad bit rushed. It’s a hard call for me though because I think Laura Kaye could have written this the length of War and Peace and I may still have said it wasn’t long enough, haha. The another thing is just a small one but it stuck out to me. At one point Billy talks about his work but he doesn’t sound as though he fully enjoys it, he comments that he would like to do something that is more of a ‘on the front line’ type job and that comment never goes anywhere. I was kinda of looking forward to him having a life changing moment about his employment situation, especially when we got to the dramatic moments at the end, and as far as we know he’s still doing a job that “pays the bills”.
In the end I really loved this story. I loved the silliness, the emotion, the characters, the message. It’s a classic Laura Kaye and I will be back for more and more so keep them coming Laura! <3
~ HAPPY READING ~
I went into Fighting For What’s His thinking, “yay, Billy!” But now I’m all about, “yay, Shayna!” I loved that she was so strong and dedicated despite dealing with her personal pain and that she was willing to be there for Billy no matter what. Billy was the perfect combination of wounded hero and best friend’s little sister hero, wanting Shayna but feeling like he’s not right for her.
One of my favorite things about the Warrior Fight Club series, and really all of Laura Kaye’s series, is that she’s not afraid to deal with some ugly realities and emotions that so many men and women struggle with while still showing there is light and love out there for everyone. Definitely another keeper…and I’m going to need Sean and Dani stat!
Another great book from Laura, this is book 2 in her Warrior Fight Club series and was a really enjoyable read for me!
This is a ‘brother’s best friend’ type trope – Billy is living in the civilian world after being in the military, he’s a survivor from a blast and is partly covered in burns, and he suffers from survivor’s guilt. His best friend from the Rangers asks for his sister to come stay with Billy while she starts her new job and gets settled. Shayna, his friend’s sister, is no longer the girl he knew, but a beautiful woman who is off limits, but the longer she is there, the more he wants her.
Shayna has had a crush on Billy since she was a girl, moving into his house seemed the perfect solution to her housing problem while she starts her new job, but little did she expect to explosive chemistry and attraction to Billy to be there!
There is a great dynamic between these two, both of which are suffering from guilt and won’t let the other one in. But each knows the other is off limits, but are constantly fighting their attraction to each other, trying their best to remain in the friend zone. Even when staying away from each other neither can forget the attraction or get on with their lives. It takes a disaster to throw them both together to realise what they have and how good they are together.
A great read, emotional and passionate, a bit of a slow burn, but a fab storyline. Highly recommended reading.
Loving the Warrior Fight Club series.
Billy and Shayna both carry around their guilt and blame themselves for things that they had no control. Perhaps, kindred spirits that see their self in each other. Billy doesn’t want to burden Shayna with all of his issues, but what happens when she moves on and he almost loses her? I love how Billy and Shayna both admit how they feel for each other and discuss the issues from their past.
Sometimes you just need to right person to talk to and it will make you whole again.
4.5/5
We have previously met Billy in the first book, Fighting for Everything. His army ranger days are over, now he was working as a private investigator, which was way tame and a bit boring compared to his previous job. Together with the other vets, their MMA training at the Warrior Fight Club allows him not to dwell on his past and forget it ever happened.
His life was all routine, until his best friend asked him a favor. To allow the latter’s sister to stay at his home while she tries to find for an apartment.
It wouldn’t be a problem, he has the room. What he didn’t expect is his best friend’s sister to grow up stunning and sexy. Will he be strong enough to resist?
Shayna Curtis is new to town and excited to start her new job. Not to mention, her brother arranged her to live with her long-time crush as she tries to find an apartment in the big city.
Billy is torn between wanting Shay to leave or making her stay. He wants her around, and he wants her in his bed. But he can’t have her, he’s too jaded and too much demons from his past. Will they have their happy-ever-after?
Just like the first book, I enjoyed reading Fighting for Everything. I love the chemistry between Billy and Shay. Their first meeting in the apartment is epic, and ever since, you can feel the intense brewing of chemistry between the two of them. Billy has so much going on in his mind, nevertheless, Shay was brave enough to destroy the walls he built around him. Shay is easy to love. She’s a strong, determined and persistent character. She has her demons, and I was just glad it was addressed before the story ended.
Fast paced, sexy, and sweet – Laura Kaye continues on with her must-read Warrior Fight Club Series. I can’t wait for the next installment!
Fighting for What’s His just hits the ground running. From the moment that Shay shows up and Billy meets her, these two are ready to implode. Both of them don’t want to over assume, neither of them can really say what they need, and they are so much alike it hurts. I really enjoyed watching how Shay bloomed in her new job and built relationships around her. And how Billy realized what he needed to actually live. The others from the Fight Club were integral as were Rueben and his dog Ziggy! This was a fantastic well developed story.
5 stars
Such a great read!!! I absolutely loved Fighting for What’s His!
Shayna and Billy might have the cutest meet cute in history! Ok, it’s not their first time meeting since they’ve known each other for years but it’s the thing that reframes Billy’s remembrance of her as his best friend’s little sister to the woman he can’t forget. Billy is doing his best friend a favor by letting his little sister live in his house temporarily while she relocates and sets up in D.C., it should’ve been easy. Shayna’s always been a cool chick and he and Ryan are Army Ranger buddies but after seeing her naked, he can’t seem to remember the “sisters are off-limits” rule.
Shayna is thankful for the temporary living situation, even though her childhood crush growing up into a super hot Army Ranger makes it a tad awkward. She needed to reset her life after everything that happened and she’s off on the right foot landing the new photojournalist job in D.C. The more she gets to know the grown up version of Billy, the more she admires him and realizes they have a lot in common, including past trauma that is still affecting their lives.
I ADORED this book and these characters! Their struggle made the successes all the more sweet. Billy is a veteran struggling to transition to a civilian life and shouldering a massive amount of survivor’s guilt. Shayna represents the cilivian side of the post traumatic stress equation. I loved that the author showed both sides. Warrior Fight Club is an organization doing amazing work in this book and I’m so happy that vets are getting such focus. There is a great deal of humor and camaraderie in these pages and I love that Shayna helped Billy find joy again! This is a fabulous book that I know I’ll be rereading again and again!

Totes enjoyed this one! Billy has issues, serious ones but he’s trying to overcome them and Shay is still recovering as well. I loved their first meeting! That Shayna!! LOL Loved her! A strong heroine and a supportive, yet alpha hero!
I’m really enjoying this Warrior Fight Club Series!
Book two in this wickedly hot and sexy new series.
Billy has worked hard to overcome his Demons via fighting.
Everything has been some what okay for him until… His best friend asks him to put up his kid sister as she is moving to DC.
Well two things happen…
Shayna is no longer a kid. She is more beautiful then he ever paid attention too.
She is quick, witty and doesn’t take his BS.
She truly enjoys time out with him at the club too.
Shayna has crushed on Billy and knows what she wants.
Can she manage it?
They both have skeletons in their closets isn’t it time to throw them out?
How can he keep his distance?
Does he want too?
Hot, Sexy, and great reading…
Shayna has landed a new job in DC. A photo-editor for the Gazette. Her brother Ryan, although deployed, calls upon his friend and discharged Ranger Billy to give her shelter and protect her. Well the shelter part is easy, protecting is debatable.
When Shayna arrives, Billy is late and it’s pouring rain. Not to be deterred and silently thanking her brother, she breaks in.
Of course when Billy does get there he thinks correctly that someone had broken into his home. He just didn’t expect it to be Shayna.
Billy and Shayna have more in common than they realize. PTSD takes many forms and they both have it in similar ways.
I loved the interaction with the members of the WFC, the dinners were fun and enlightening.
Plenty of hiliarity, creative cursing, and impressive name calling lace this book as these two grow closer.
I truly enjoy these books with the unique approaches to PTSD and the colorful characters dealing with it.
I am loving the Warriors Fight Club series!
Fighting for What’s His is exactly what the title is about. Simply put, a grown up Shayna has fallen in love with her childhood crush, her brother’s best friend. But that’s most definitely not all it is. Shayna and Billy carry so much guilt; guilt over the deaths of persons close to them. At times that guilt is blinding, oppressive. Neither has walked away from their trauma unscathed, whether physically or emotionally.
Shayna is his best friend’s younger sister and he gladly agreed to share his apartment with her. She’s just moved there and gotten a job as a photojournalist at the local paper. What began as a temporary arrangement has led to desires neither can deny. It’s also opened the door to a friendship that is healing them bit by bit. All he has to do is remember who she is.
Denial is the name of the game until walking away is impossible. Fighting For What’s His. What they share is passionate, fun, healing, and beautiful.
I like that Shayna was not enlisted because it removes her just a bit. She has her own traumas, but they’re different from Billy’s. Her brother is enlisted so she fully understands his traumas. She’s bold and fun. She makes him face what he’s put off coming to terms with for too long. He’s watched Noah heal and fall in love. Can he have that too? Does he want that? Want her? Yes!
How they meet, right in the beginning of the book will have you smiling and laughing. It’s perfect! Shayna’s zest for colorful descriptives keep you laughing. Billy and Shayna make you feel good as you watch them fall for and heal themselves and each other.
“The girl-no, the woman-who was supposed to have been off limits had stolen his fucking heart.”
Another beautiful, emotional, and passionate romance from the lovely Laura Kaye! Fighting for What’s His is a standalone novel in her Warrior Fight Club series. I have to point out the obvious and say it was pretty friggin’ cool to read a book when you share the same name as the heroine of that book. I had butterflies going into this and they put up permanent residence in my stomach from beginning to end. These characters felt so real to me and I was easily able to connect with them on a deeper level because of the amount of emotion that Ms. Kaye brought to every single chapter.
Shayna and Billy were wonderful together. From the very start they shared a connection and it only blossomed the more they were around each other. Guilt, shame, regret…these two share similar demons, which made it difficult to move forward. After some stubbornness and other roadblocks that kept these two at a distance, a single tragic event made them realize that they are better fighting their demons together, rather than apart. The realization was heart wrenching and beautiful. These two…what they’ve been through…it made it really easy to carve out a place in my heart for them both. Laura Kaye has once again moved me with her storytelling. The way she brings her characters to life is amazing and it made me want to reach through the pages of this book and hold these characters tight and never let go.
Shayna and Billy are both emotionally struggling and living only part of their lives in the present. When Shayna moves in with Billy it results in her long time crush lingering under the surface of a great new friendship they are building. Billy realizes Shayna is not the same girl he remembers when he hung out with his buddy when they were home on leave together. Both of these characters have huge walls around their hearts and enough guilt to disable even the most positive of people. I love how these two characters build a friendship and relationship that is based on a mutual love, care, and respect for each other. Of course they both have trouble being honest about how they feel about the other which results in them taking the long path to happiness. Billy and Shayna are funny, sweet and hotter than hot! Loved getting to check in with the other members of WFC and cannot wait for Sean and Dani’s book soon!
4.5 Stars. This is a “brother’s best friend” type trope, but it’s also a lot more than that as we continue to have the warrior fight club (and more of it in this installment) for helping former military members deal with the after effects of war and injuries. I’m this case Billy has burn injuries and survivor’s guilt, but Shayna has some survivor’s guilt of her own. Overall, I liked the friendship and slower burn build to this story. And the supporting cast was fun (especially Mo who also played a large role in book 1). I liked this one even better than the first in the series and look forward to the next installment!
Billy has issues but they have been brought on by PTSD from serving. It was a good stand-alone but some characters do repeat from earlier book. But I like stories about “survivors” and the strength needed to overcome issues relating to serving.
Laura Kaye is an exceptional storyteller! In Fighting For What’s His, the second book in the Warrior Fight Club, Laura tackles the contemporary issue of what happens to returning veterans as they try to adjust to civilian life. She deftly describes the struggles and treatment plans in place to help them. Dealing with survivor’s guilt and learning to feel worthy to love again is the real love story in Fighting for What’s His. And the tale was mesmerizing! It is Laura Kayes dedication to veteran’s cause that keeps me reading her books!
Yet, as an avid romance reader, I can also say that Laura has a way with words that brings romance alive! Fighting for What’s His, is a page turning novel full of sexual tension, steamy encounters between friends who grow to be lovers and most amazing, the strength that love gives us to tackle our fears. In this novel, Laura’s women characters have hidden strengths, despite their issues, they are not damsels in distress. Laura’s characters are so relatable, they become your new book besties! Her male characters are drool worthy! Her sex scenes are steamy enough to melt paint of your car! Laura Kayes descriptions of Washington, DC were so vivid, I could picture the city as though I was there. Laura Kate provides the escape to a different place I crave when I read romance. With Fighting For What’s His, Laura helps me to believe that happily ever after is possible.
I can’t wait to read the whole series!
05/09/2021 I loved “Fighting for What’s His” (nook). This well-written story gives an insight into what many of our military veterans endure. In spite of the trauma suffered by Billy and the tragedy in Shayna’s life, each turns to the other. Of course they have crushed on each other for years and overcome many difficulties for their HEA.
Thank you, Ms. Kaye, for all of the information on our veterans.
Great book
