Each time I think there’s no way Nicholas Smith can outdo the previous story in his awesome series, he proves me wrong. As the Variants continue to evolve, little glimmers of hope for mankind dwindles. Of the three books I’ve read so far, this is certainly the darkest and most visceral. I was holding my breath, worried that he might kill off Fitz or Apollo. The author has an exceptional gift for storytelling combined with some of the strongest characterization I’ve ever read. Bravo!
Here we are at book 3, and you would think that things might slow down a little, well think again!!! In the last book, Beckham and his crew were sent into New York for Operation Liberty, but he had a bad feeling about this mission because he knew that there should have been more Variants than what were showing up on the recon mission. But where are they? They soon found out and Beckham and some of his men were left stranded in New York with only one option, to head down to the sewers to find a way out. Now we pick up with them in the sewers and what they find down there changes everything.
Meanwhile on Plum Island, Kate and Pat are trying everything to find a way to kill the Variants. With live specimens on the Island, it will hopefully only be a matter of time. But she knows in her heart that the only way to kill them may be another bio weapon. Will she be able to do the unthinkable.
But that’s not all!!! A seemingly abandoned Navy destroyer crashes into the Connecticut shoreline and with resources dwindling on the Island. A team is sent to investigate and retrieve anything they find. What they do find, is something they thought was eradicated!
I have to say, these books are one heck of a roller coaster. It’s pretty much non stop and this one even more so. Beckham and some of his team are left in New York and head to the sewers. During this my heart was in my mouth because I couldn’t see how they could get out of it. But it’s Beckham!! He even manages to find a survivor, Meg, badly wounded but alive. Then the author says… that’s not enough and proceeds to send a certain team to the abandoned Naval Destroyer where they find….., I’m not going to say because it would be a spoiler!! 😉 Needless to say, the team are stretched to their limits and it all seems hopeless.
One thing I love about the series is the characters. There are some of the most memorable ones I’ve ever read. I love Beckham, he is such an amazing person and always tries to do what’s right no matter what. I also love Kate, she is smart, brave and strong. Then we have Horn, Riley, Fitz and of course Apollo! All are so well written and developed that you can’t help but root for them. Apollo is the best though. Such an amazing dog!! Can’t wait to read more about him,
This is without a doubt an action packed, addicting, entertaining and engrossing read. I’m listening to each back to back and finding it hard to put them down, because there isn’t a good place to pause them. Something is happening all the time and I need to see what happens next, which leads to me staying up way too late and being tired, but it’s so worth it. I am deep into book 4 already and absolutely loving it!!! Well worth the credits!!!
Bronson Pinchot was once again amazing. He has these characters down perfectly and nails the whole performance. I was captivated and enthralled the whole way through.
