Fight to stay alive. The Gravelands are a dangerous place. In a world of uncertainty, Cora Manning knows one thing without a doubt: getting into Genesis will offer her a brighter future. When the intake coordinator agrees to let her in because of her genetic makeup, Cora discovers the promised city of utopia is nothing like she imagined. The rebellion has begun.
I really enjoyed this book and getting to see where Gensis actually began gives more insight to the series. The Cora and Jasper are likable characters. I’m excited to read the rest of the series!

Prepare to enter a world of where everything has changed. In this science fiction dystopian novel we are thrown into a world of where nothing is the same anymore. The world has been destroyed. The Red Plague has wiped out the ability to have children naturally, cities have been destroyed, food is scarce, and the government is seeking to start anew. Certain people have been selected to begin again in a new settlement, but one must contribute or be cast out or killed. Cora, because she was conceived through a government program, is able to just squeak by getting in. She has no idea what it is that she is getting herself into, but she soon will the longer she stays.
Escape Forbidden by Ruth Silver is the first book in a new series. Escape Forbidden is meant to be a prequel to this series, but for me, it falls flat. The way the story starts off we are given no real background on what has happened or is happening. A lottery has taken place for most of the people who are left, but we don’t get to read about that lottery. Typically, when I think of a “prequel” I think of a beginning story that tells us how things came to be and set a solid foundation for the overall story as it moves forward. I wish that the author had done more of this. As is the story feels like it has already been going and that the reader is brought in on a scene that is already in motion and that we are having to play catch-up.
I like the pace of the story overall. The story moves at a quick pace and kept me engaged. There are certain scenes of where I wanted more. I wanted to know more of what was going on. I like that the author takes Cora and alters her in the story. She starts out one way, but thanks to the very government that is meant to save them all, she is changed. There are some nice surprises in the story, but I feel that there are certain places that could have been built up to and on and fleshed out more.
When I read the blurb for this book, I was excited to read it and delve into this series. I have to say though that I feel that as a prequel, this story falls a bit flat for me. There is no real background created for this story to build on. I think that if the author had built on the war(s) that caused the world to become what it now is, that would have helped this story. As is, the story is character driven, but it needs more.
As is I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. I like the overall idea for the story, but I don’t feel that it was brought to its full potential as a prequel. I am interested in pursuing this series and seeing where the storyline goes.
I have never read anything from Ruth Silver before this story. I am glad I read this book I was so into the book and could not put it down till I finshed it. This story has strong characters and a wonderful story as it unfolds I loved reading it.

I have to say, this was a pretty good start to a new series. Since the story ends fast forwarded a few years, I’m not quite sure where the author is going for the main series, but I’m looking forward to finding out! I loved the little ‘magical’ twist at the end. I wish that particular part played a bigger part in the book, but who knows for future novels? I also liked Jasper, one of the main characters. He’s a strong and likable guy. Cora comes off as a fighter from chapter one, but she gets softer and more likable throughout. If you like young adult dystopian novels with some action and suspense then I would recommend this. It’s a quick read and well written, with a few soft hints at romance and some violence.
Escape Forbidden is the prequel to the Aberrant series.
Final Rating: 4 Stars
Cora was conceived by the Three Parent Project, which should have assured that she and her parents would be allowed into Genesis, a government-run “utopian dream”, a place of sanctuary from the rest of the outside world struggling to survive. But new people in power, new rules, and limited resources changed all that. Now her father was begging the intake coordinator to allow Cora in. Her survival would depend on it. Her perfect genetics which would not let her get cancer or an auto-immune disease made her elite and valuable to Genesis. But she had to prove she was born from that briefly run Project. Unfortunately, scanning her records let the coordinator see her birth date which would tell him she was not 18, the age requirement for acceptance, as she and her father had earlier claimed she was. However, he told her she would be accepted. She would never see her parents again. And on her way inside, they injected her with something they said would keep her healthy and immune from disease.
The more Cora sees, the more she realizes things are not what they had been told. The city is quickly attacked – is this the start of a rebellion? And Cora gets sick. What is happening? With death all around her, she has no choice but to run. And what is she getting into now?
This is the kind of book that makes you squirm a little bit. But it was well written and let the reader see what kind of world Cora was entering. It promises an exciting series to follow!
Short read that sets the table
by GRThemann
Enjoyed the book but felt that there was a bigger story that could have been told. Granted, this did set the table for further books and that the author didn’t want to give much away, but Cora and Jasper have a lot more depth to their story that needs to be expanded upon. Now, I’m ready to get on with the meat after this tasty appetizer.

Cora spent her whole life fighting to stay alive in a world devastated by the Red Plague. Her parents thought getting her into the protected city of Genesis would protect her. The new government promises to provide food, shelter and a better life. Unfortunately she no sooner arrives but the town is attacked, she gets sick and told she’s dying. Genesis is not the Utopia it’s described to be but a dictatorship. She escapes with Jasper to Cabal and builds a new life until the government attacks. Now she must fight for her freedom.
