In her early thirties, Elizabeth Gilbert had everything a modern American woman was supposed to want—husband, country home, successful career—but instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed by panic and confusion. This wise and rapturous book is the story of how she left behind all these outward marks of success, and set out to explore three different aspects of her nature, against the backdrop of three different cultures: pleasure in Italy, devotion in India, and on the Indonesian island of Bali, a balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence.

This is on e of those books I run to after major life events. It’s a beautiful book that reads like easy chick lit, but inspires and helps me recalibrate.
Love the wanderlust (I am cursed w it) and the characters she meets. She describes the settings and characters wonderfully and satisfyingly. I enjoyed her earnest search for meaning and listening with all ears to the “wisdom” of others, adjusting her paradigm / worldview as she lived forward. Elizabeth Gilbert has a good sense of humor, too, including being able to laugh at herself. A good book.
Really Enjoyed the book! Pasted it on to a friend. I thought she would like it, she did and passed it on to another friend
I have nothing good to say about this book. IMO, it’s nothing but a huge b*tch fest about how selfish she is, how her spouse couldn’t make HER happy and then whored herself out to anything out there that could GIVE her meaning. She didn’t find it for herself. It had to be given to her. The book is a waste of paper and time. It’s a long, dry read.
A great book a great movie too, I loved both
I loved this candid book about a woman searching for answers. I read it at a time in my life where I was also searching. I felt like she was my friend and cohort. Beautiful story.
I didn’t love this book. In my opinion the movie was better. To me, book was slow
LOVE IT!!!!!!!
Everyone loved this book and cceot me. I couldn’t finish it.
One woman’s journey to find herself and a greater understanding of life as she is able to travel and delve into other cultures, people and beliefs.
How experiences can change your perspective and open your mind to new challenges and experiences…
Predictable, tiresome
Wonderful read, a real treat. I read it twice in one year.
Loved this book .. new beginnings
One woman’s apparently inspirational journey to achieve inner peace and understanding from–eating classy food, going to the Far East to learn prayer and having sex with a gorgeous man. And they thought it was movie worthy;…where finally, movie critics came closer to honesty than book critics. Should only be read if you absolutely have no other choice, (like in a prison cell, and this is what they hand you; they only place where you don’t want to eat, prayer doesn’t help your situation and love is a temporary 180).
Very enjoyable read.
Author Ed too self involved in this autobiography. I did not entirely trust her accounts. At times she was a bit sappy too.
Was enjoyable
True story of the author’s spiritual and physical journey to find herself and to find love. Wonderfully written. I wish I could join her in her search.
Shallow.
