In her early thirties, Elizabeth Gilbert had everything a modern American woman was supposed to want—husband, country home, successful career—but instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed by panic and confusion. This wise and rapturous book is the story of how she left behind all these outward marks of success, and set out to explore three different aspects of her nature, against the backdrop of three different cultures: pleasure in Italy, devotion in India, and on the Indonesian island of Bali, a balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence.

A book containing real answers
Over-rated.
It felt as if this writer found a way to fund her trips to various countries. Self-regarding, shallow, and unconvincing.
A little slow in spots, hard to get into
I absolutely loved reading this book. I was skeptical at first because I had heard so many people say they liked it but when asked what they liked, the answer was usually “Everything. You’ve just gotta read it!”
While I highly recommend this book, I’ll tell you why. If you like books that take you on adventures, give you something that you can relate to, make you laugh out loud, make you groan at a “bad dad joke”, or yell at the main character for doing something they shouldn’t have done, then read this book.
A good story, but not particularly well-written.
It is my opinion that the fame of this book was way overrated. Obviously many people enjoyed it, but I found it to be shallow.
Written by a very self centered woman. Didn’t like.
Should have been titled “eat”. Because the other two thirds just didn’t live up to my expectations. That’s only my opinion, though. Her other books are much better.
Worse book I’ve ever read
Enjoyed this book. It is a page turner.
All I could do was wish the author would stop whining
I thought she was selfish and whiny.
Soul searching, introspective read
I found it boring and the author narcissistic.
I read this book a while ago and found it to be an eye opener. It makes a person see things in a different way, from another perspective. It’s truly a journey reading this book.
This book required you to think beyond your everyday mundane schedule and enjoy the small things in life. Live and love!
It took me several tries to read it over a couple of years. The book is wonderful but I think I had to be in the right frame of mind myself. When I finally really committed to reading it this year I didn’t want to put it down.
I bogged down in the plot and found it quite boring. I much preferred the movie, and those are words I rarely say.
Did the author really need to tell the readers she masterbated?
