In her early thirties, Elizabeth Gilbert had everything a modern American woman was supposed to want—husband, country home, successful career—but instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed by panic and confusion. This wise and rapturous book is the story of how she left behind all these outward marks of success, and set out to explore three different aspects of her nature, against the backdrop of three different cultures: pleasure in Italy, devotion in India, and on the Indonesian island of Bali, a balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence.

I read a lot of fiction and it was delightful to follow a human person who was so good and sharing the journey in words and following a human (rather than perfect) path. I enjoyed this book
She does some neat things and meets ssome crazy people
Read this then read The Razors Edge or at least see the movie. They are lifetimes apart but both are so relevant today.
BORING
Love this story. The author takes you along on her journey to healing and self discovery. Well-written.
Self indulgent, boring, not particularly well written
Loved it!
I really enjoyed it. She had the stamina to keep going, she was brave in going to different countries and handled whatever came her way. It’s alright to try different things and to learn lessons in life.
Boring
This is the chronicle of a woman’s quest for everything – revival of her then extinguished enthusiasm for life , thirst for sustainable happiness and mystic state of divine bliss commiserated by recovery from the avalanche of accusations and expectations , desperate attempt to escape the dread of a destroyed marriage and consequent failure of an immediate affair. The book potrays Gilbert’s journey through the harsh realities of life and consequent healing of inner wounds that is apparently the reccuring events of human life. However , her journey towards happiness was catalysed by a tour to Italy where she happens to be enlightened by the basic manthra of life..’ to let herself go and stop trying to control her life’. Her spiritual exploration of the divine force through continued practising of yoga at an ashram in India made her look at life from a different perspective , hence presenting to her an irreplacable experience if divine interventions. Then , several months in Indinesia with a known healer presents her with opportunities to make new acquaintances and here she meets ‘that one’ who accepts her as she is and being with whom is like being in company with herself.
The book recieved several awards for the element of originality and is realistic in it’s unique way.The narrative style is well appreciated and the book is an undepleting source of inspiration for all those who are battling their inner demons to discover the true yourself.
Lots to think about. I especially enjoyed her time at ashrams. Helped me figure out what was going on in the life of someone near and dear to me.
I enjoyed this book immensely
Did I add the adjective suspenseful? Oh yes it was that and more. It intrigued my sense of family and the fact that she was definetly not like me. So numerous times I was intrigued to finish the book and endeavor more and more about what she did. The eating habits intrigued me through I couldn’t help but think about how she used her eating as a tool to cope and how dangerous thst could be for her. It’s good reading and brings you bro those days when you just wish the book never ended. Although, to me, it seemed as though she allowed herself too much freedom, all the while I was glad that she could rebel with little guilt burdening, at least sometimes!
This is one woman’s account of a spiritual awakening told with humor and self deprecation. The reader of this book will also be drawn into the wit and wisdom of cultures foreign to Americans in such way as to make one wonder if ours is the superior one. A delightful read for anyone who is interested in spirituality and culture.
I wanted to like this book I just found it slow and boring. I pushed through it but it was not for me.
I recommend this book because it has already become a book to which allusions are made in our common lives. It is an easy read, and it helped me to understand the choice to remain childless. It reinforces the truth that all humans look for love and life’s meaning.
I loved this story!
I could not finish this book….BORING
I love this type of book, but stick to the movie . She comes across as having the answers but if you look at her life, more questions might be the way to go. So unoriginal.
I am baffled why so many people love this book. The heroine was self centered and unlikeable.
I read this book after seeing the movie and really liked it. The book made me want to embark on a similar journey of self discovery.
