Now, this beloved and iconic book returns in a beautiful … and iconic book returns in a beautiful 10th anniversary edition, complete with an updated introduction from the author, to launch a whole new generation of fans.
In her early thirties, Elizabeth Gilbert had everything a modern American woman was supposed to want—husband, country home, successful career—but instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed by panic and confusion. This wise and rapturous book is the story of how she left behind all these outward marks of success, and set out to explore three different aspects of her nature, against the backdrop of three different cultures: pleasure in Italy, devotion in India, and on the Indonesian island of Bali, a balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence.

I’ve always believed books come to me when I need them most and several years ago this book found me. I loved the feminine honesty, the personal journey, and the spiritual evolution of the female main character. Is it a woman’s story? Yes. Yes, it is, but it’s more a human story. While it was perhaps only a ‘snapshot’ of the author’s ideas about life while she wrote it, the book succeeded in liberating me from some old ideas I was carrying around that I needed to shed to move past the grief I was experiencing. I’ve read other books by the author and they are equally well-written and great stories on their own. However, this one is touched by a bit of magic. In the ereader age, this was a hard-cover buy.
I loved this story and it inspired me in many ways to find my own place in the world. I have not yet made the trek across the world to find myself, as I do not presently possess the financial means for such. But, I’ve taken an inward journey in part inspired by the author whom I now follow not only as an author but because of her place in spiritual and positive thinking. I recommend the book.
Always a fan of memoirs, I had to find out why this book was a bestseller. “Eat, Pray, Love” is laid out in a fascinating yet apt way – with each chapter being a “bead” from the japa mala, something you’ll have to read about in the introduction.
In “Eat, Pray, Love”, Gilbert tells her spiritual memoir – a journey through Italy, India, and Indonesia in order to find balance in the midst of her chaotic life. Gilbert and I do not share the same worldview, but Gilbert seems to have considered and thought out very well where she stands on spiritual matters (found written in bead – chapter – 3). I found her spiritual journey inspirational and motivating, despite our differences.
I really enjoyed reading this well-named novel – it went by far too quickly.
I loved this book. It taught me a lot about myself. Some parts were disjointed and felt like they were just filled to have the exact numbers she wanted. This book ignited my wanderlust and now I want to tour Europe this summer.
Honest Self-discovery Journey, a Delightful Read
After a painful divorce and broke up with a boyfriend in her early thirties, Elizabeth was lost. She took a year off traveling to three countries in search of meaning of life.
She spent four months in Italy, four months in India, and four months in Indonesia. In Italy, she learned Italian and indulged herself in eating. She commented that Italians enjoy the pleasure of doing nothing. she then went to Ashram in India where she followed a restricted and strict schedule. She got up at 4 a.m. meditated in a cave for 14 hours a day. It was here she found the spiritual enlightenment. The last four months, she went to Bali, Indonesia to meet with a local medicine man. The medicine man wanted to learn English and said to teach her about medicine. She learned to understand the culture and the local people. It was in Indonesia where she learned true love.
In this book, Elizabeth was honest about her insecurity, her laugh and tears, and her neediness of guys. She went from hearing herself talking to learning to listen. Her writing in this book is refreshing, a conversational and diary style. A delight read.
This book affected me deeply. I read it at a time in my life when things were upside down and, like Elizabeth Gilbert, I needed a new adventure. Her story inspired me to discover myself in a new way.
Many more details than the movie. Personally, I found the extra material in this book to greatly enhance what I already knew from the movie. Especially useful if one is interested in other cultures.
couldn’t put down. fell asleep with it on my lap many nights.
Gilbert’s book is an encouraging, inspirational read, and I loved every moment with it. To me, it shows how introspection can show you the path to become a New and Better You. How to find your voice. Control your destiny. Evolve to higher levels of peace and wellness. How it’s not about stuffing your emotions, only to have them come spilling out to passersby who have done the work and are happy with the world.

If you haven’t managed to read this yet, may I ask if you have been living under a rock? There have been many criticisms lobbed at Eat Pray Love—that it is egocentric navelgazing at it’s worst. I don’t agree. I think this is one particular woman’s journey, which she tells with considerable honesty and humor.
I only wish I had the courage to pick up and go to all of these places on my own! I loved the author’s writing style – funny, honest, engaging. I didn’t want it to end!
Eat, Pray, Love is a magnificent memoir about how facing the truth of who you want to be opens the heart and mind to the deepest secrets of the self. Gilbert’s candor and honesty feel almost confessional as she examines the pain of her life in excruciating detail. The openness with which she tackles her personal turmoil allows for a fascinating study of her own mind. Sharing her most intimate feelings about regret and failure allow readers to engage with her at every moment of her journey across three continents. Chronicling her life from the time of her devastating divorce and her subsequent love affair afterward with another man, Gilbert reveals her shattered self as a lost soul, clinically depressed and suicidal. To find reconciliation and begin healing, she travels first to Italy, where she immerses in the pleasure of indulgent eating and the desire to speak Italian. Leaving Italy after four months, she stays at an ashram in India, practicing and studying the path to her inner voice. The final leg of her journey takes her to Indonesia, where she finally encounters a lasting chance to love again. This book is a brilliant recollection of a quest to discover one’s self. Gilbert’s story has the bearing of an unforgettable travel narrative and a profound memoir that reaches the standards of a classic.
Rarely does a movie do a book justice…however, in this case the book and the movie were both FANTASTIC…oh to go find myself in these exotic places would be so divine. It felt as if I was looking and living through her eyes…Beautifully written, it will definitely be one of my favorite read again books of all time.
I really liked it. She shares candidly about her travels and why she wants to go to those places and how she feels. It’s quite entertaining.
If you like memoirs and stories of the human experience of breaking beyond our personal barriers, this is a wonderful addition to your library. A bonus would be getting the audio book as Elizabeth Gilbert’s reading of her book is fantastic.
Loved this book SO much. It’s a very insightful book that makes you re-think life and leaves you with a want for adventure of any kind. It’s quirky and witty, full of quips. I really found myself sucked into this well-written book.
The story begins when Elizabeth reveals the pain and emptiness of a marriage gone wrong. Her life is upended. She is feeling lost and vulnerable when her boss offers her a remarkable opportunity and when she accepts the task a door opens for healing, love and some really good pizza! Her remarkable journey shows us what can happen when we are brave and walk through the door. Along the way she meets some new friends in unexpected places and begins to embrace life through food, prayer and eventually love.
Job well done…the movie, well that is a completely different thing 🙁 Don’t confuse the two.
Great book. Good insight. Thoughtful and inspiring.
It takes all the question, guilt, confusion and brings it down to one truth….Love.
I must start with an apology, and perhaps a reveal – I didn’t like this book the first two times I starting reading it; the third time I started it, I realized I hadn’t liked it because it hit too close to home. I LOVED it the third time and I finished it.
Ms. Gilbert wrote in such a way that drew me in, left me wanting more, and fulfilled my needs as a reader; I feel like she and I could sit down with a good bottle of red and rehash our similar lives. I’m so glad I never gave up completely on this wonderful book.
The third time around, I enjoyed traveling with Ms. Gilbert on her adventures and learning through her experiences.
I highly recommend reading this book; you might actually find yourself within its pages – I did.
