Absorbing series. Always looking forward to the next installment.
Mostly very realistic. Really good writing. Page turner and a bit of romance.
Very well written.
Good first book to the series… Makes you want to go right out and find the next book in the series.
Strong opening to a wonderful series – I’ve read them all!
Great book and well written. There are countless reviews of Stirling’s work and this was the one that caught me and got me started on his series.
Great character development. Gets you thinking.
A new twist on an old theme. Read the entire series
Great beginning to am engrossing series!
It was a well developed apocalyptic story. The characters were extremely well fleshed out and believable.
An absorbing page turner of a book.
LOVED IT
Completely enjoyed this book . Recommend for anyone who enjoys alternate reality stories.
A fantastic and freighting tale of world change. I found it especially interesting since I live in the area the story is set in. although the complete premise is hard to swallow S M Stirling does a good job of helping the reader to suspend disbelief while instilling an understanding of the tenuous grasp we hold on technology, and just how close we all live to starvation and death because of our dependence on it. It brought home to me that technology is our culture. All that aside if you read this one you will have to read them all. I couldn’t put them down till I had finished the series.
Stirling did an outstanding job with this book, and the premise it is founded upon. The models adopted and adapted for the new societies, and some picture of what it would take to survive in this dystopian future is reflected in the primary characters of this story.
Really good, the author always holds my attention.
Great SF read about the world being instantly plunged back to the Dark Ages when all technology fails. Fun exploration of how ordinary events become the mythology of the future, based on the mythology of the past. The two main characters are entertaining to follow as they evolve from ordinary citizens to warriors and leaders in a new world.
Makes you consider life without technology, as well as the different ways people react to abrupt change.
This is an excellent book, totally realistic view of a post-apocalyptic world. I know it was written in the 1990’s, but it depicts the reality of what could happen if the world went back to living without modern amenities. It reminds me of the book, ‘Alas, Babylon’, which depicted the reality of nuclear war back in the 1960’s.
I read this in paperback years ago. I jumped at the opportunity to get it for the kindle. Rereading was just as good as the first time!
