A zompoc expedition for a teen & his dog…
Dead State: Fallout (A Post Apocalyptic Survival Thriller, Book 1) by Derek Shupert and narrated by B. C. Archer is a good zompoc adventure for young adults.
What’s it about? James, his dog Duke, and his dad are on a routine hunting trip when the zombie apocalypse begins. Chasers (aka zombies) are all around. One thing leads to another and James and Duke try to make their way to his family. Along the way they meet some good and bad folks. The story is a bit slow going in the beginning- lots of hunting, life lessons, and setting of the story, but if you keep with it, it does pick up the pace about an hour in and turns out to be a good one. I’d like to see a more details and a little less dialogue in future installments, but that my personal opinion, others might feel different.
The narrator, B. C. Archer, was good overall. I’d like to hear just a little more difference with the character voices in the future books. I’d listen to him again.
Overall I recommend. There is a lot of potential for this one, I’ll definitely check out the second book.
Parental guidance/trigger warnings: This is a story about the zombie apocalypse- violence, death, and similar subject matter occurs throughout the book. Hunting animals for food (including cutting and cooking), guns, bridge collapse. S-word x1.
*I won this in a contest, not sure if I need to write this, but here it is just in case 😉
This action-packed story of survival and adventure is a welcome addition to the post-apocalyptic YA genre. Fifteen-year-old James is a sympathetic and spunky main character trying to safely navigate the suddenly end of the world as he knows it. For YA readers who enjoy post-apocalyptic fiction, Dead State: Fallout is a must read.
This is a nicely told story. I loved that Duke is main character. I really was drawn Into James’ story. His take on his and Dukes survival no matter Is commendable. It is great meeting all the characters and hearing their stories. I look forward to more is James and Duke’s journey.
I listened to this on audio. B.C. Archer did a nice job with the characterizations. This is my first time listening to him.
I was sucked into this book right away! You know I’m a sucker for a good ‘boy and his dog’ story and then you add in the dangers of a zombie outbreak and BAM: A really freakn’ good book! (You’ll really enjoy James and Duke, I promise!) Dead State Fallout is proper, fast paced, zombie apocalypse fiction… AND it is only Book One, so there will be more! I got lost in this and cannot wait to get lost in the next one. (I’m a little excited in case you couldn’t tell) Well done, Derek Shupert!
This was such a great book! If I could give it more than five stars I would. I loved the plot and how action packed and hard hitting the events could be. I don’t scare easily, but I have to admit I freaked myself out while reading this at night. I can’t wait to read book two and see where the author takes James and Duke next. I would recommend this to older teens and adults.
Dead State: Fallout is the first book in a new post-apocalyptic survival thriller series.
Final Rating: 5 Stars
It was hard to put down. A great post-apocalyptic story. Loved the boy and his dog.
Lots of action and suspense in the entire book. It is surprising what a teenage boy (James) and his dog (Duke) have to go through. I really don’t care for the creepers or zombies or whatever you call them and had hoped they wouldn’t show up in a town. Along the way there are some wonderful characters but also some really bad ones that haven’t been bit, they are just mean an iOS to see what happens in book 2, but I think they are five in the series. I hope Mr. Shupert doesn’t drag it out. If that starts happening I will be on to something else.
This book is a great addition to the genre. It’s action-packed, original, and has a great cast of characters. Not to be missed!
Honestly, not a great book. Maybe for young readers who want their first zombie story. There’s no complexity, no character development. Just an ongoing, first person narrative that reads like it was written by an above average high school student.
