In a dark and desolated After Earth, love still does exist, but the cost of bearing such a flaw is death. World War III has left Earth in utter turmoil. People’s beliefs are said to be the cause of the worldwide destruction. After The Clearing new laws are set about – to show certitude in anything besides the law is weak and chargeable as mutiny. To be illogical and have faith in religion is … illegal, to be limitless is dangerous. And Illness is seen as a defect – all flaws that are inexcusable. But to love is the greatest betrayal of all man kind. It is a fault the world has long forgotten and punishable by death, a fatal risk Aecker and Opel are fully prepared to take – because in love there is freedom. But how far can they push back before it claims their lives and those they care about.

I highly recommended this book. If you’re a fan of Earth after The Last World War (3) and the people that are left to fend for themselves than you’ll love this book!
Wow, I really loved reading this book, although this author is new to me, when I started reading this book man did it pull me in and as I was reading it was like I was watching everything play out like a movie. That is why I want to thank Mrs. Labuschagne for letting me read her wonderful story, it truly got to me and I can’t wait for the second book so I can find out what is going to happen with Aecker, Opel, Noah, Dyllian and Dr. P, and I can’t wait to find out if love really can conquer everything and save lives!
I loved this book. Set in a world after WW3 where being human with all our fallacies is against the law. Love is punishable by death. Opal,a genetically and physically modified human and Aeker who stands against everything Opal stands for. Can these two come together? Can love conquer all? Don’t miss out on this exciting, full of action novel. I hope there will be book two.
Very different and unique.Like the chiffhanger ending.
When I first read the blurb and saw the cover for Dead of Night I was excited to read this book. It sounded engaging and interesting. As I read this book, I found myself really disappointed. This wasn’t what I was expecting. This is a sci-fi dystopian romance novel and the first in a series, but honestly, it doesn’t feel that way. For me, it feels like the author starts the story somewhere else, and then gives us the rest. What happened to the world? The author doesn’t say. What’s going on with the weather?? The author doesn’t say. What has created all these changes and aversions? The author really doesn’t say. Love is an emotion that will get you killed. There are different types of humans, and creatures/beings called Trackers. The world is different than it once was, and emotions are not something you admit to let alone: love.
We don’t get a lot of background on the characters either. There is so much potential with this story, but I feel that it falls short in so many places. I kept waiting on a flashback to tie the story together and to give me something to go on, but it never happens. The story shifts back and forth between Opel and Aecker. They have become attracted to each other in three days and have fallen in love. The author lets us know quickly into the story that they know each other, but nothing is ever clarified. This honestly frustrates me. The storyline is interesting, but I just feel like I’m missing a lot for this to be the first book in the series.
There are also some spelling errors throughout the book as well. Like the author says “offence” when it should be “offense” and “intimating” when it should be “intimidating.” I had such high hopes for this story, but I just feel that it falls flat. There are some elements that I absolutely love in this story, but I just wish that the author had put more thought into the storyline. I hate feeling like I’m missing chunks of the story.
I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. For me, this does not feel like “the first” book in a series. It feels like a series already in progress with a storyline well underway. I’m hoping that the next book will be more cohesive and not feel like the author expects us to fill in the gaps.
It took a bit to get into but once I did I enjoyed it
I read this book in April of 2018 and I apologize for not leaving this review sooner.
When I started reading Dead of Night, I was instantly intrigued due to it being a dystopian novel. I’m a sucker for them and absolutely fall in love with the character strengths, story, memories, family and everything that goes into being such a strong and independent fighter who chases the issues they are facing head on. That being said, I feel like I couldn’t ask for much more from this novel. It’s a strong first book for the Aftershock Series which will give it the ability to grow into something even better than what it already is. I cannot wait to read book two, whenever it is released.
This book was great. Aecker and Opel the two main characters in the story capture your attention. Its full of action, adventure, love. Couldnt put it down. She leaves you with a major cliff hanger and I can not wait for the next book to find out what happens. If you haven’t read it yet you need to.
This book has it all. From your average post apocalyptic scene to blazing hot love. Opel cannot remember anything about who she is or where she came from. Aecker seems to know more than he is telling her. But he hides it all because he loves her. That love could end everything he knows
