“Dead Mountain” is an extremely well-researched account of the events that led to a tragic death of nine Soviet hikers on the so-called Dead Mountain in the Urals. The true story of the disappearance of mine college age hikers in the Ural mountains. Occurring in 1959, many theories regarding these deaths have been investigated and pursued. Fascinating ending. Easy to read, notable, true story!

A thoughtful exposition of a mystery that has befuddled Russian investigators for over 50 years. Eichar masterfully weaves his own journey to find an answer into the historical narrative. An engaging read.
This exploration into the events of the dyatlov pass incident are riveting. Learning about the hikers as they traveled, and hearing some of the conspiracy theories as they are debunked really demystifies the accident. The conclusion it reaches is unexpected but very compelling. Worth a read for all mystery buffs
Great explanation of what may have happened to the hikers
Interesting story about solving the mystery around a tragic event
As someone who is an experienced winter mountaineer this book resonated as a fascinating account of an epic winter disaster which had no plausible explanation until the energetic, dogged and inspired research by the author. I’ve recommended it to my fellow winter hikers.
I liked this book because it told the story of the mysterious happenings at the campsite where the group was preparing to camp for the night but fled the tent en masse without shoes or coats for apparently no discernible reason.
I knew very little of this incident before reading the book, so it was a really good primer on the background. The author does come to a conclusion that may or may not be supported by the fact (and his experience with scientists does make me call into question his own personal narrative a bit; I do not imagine that someone high at NOAA would talk …
A solid, scrupulous and interesting re-telling of an obscure mountain tragedy. For readers who relish the details of mountaineering adventures and the attendant struggles this will prove to be riveting, but the ending is tragic.
The most amazing book I’ve read in a long time. So wonderful to FINALLY know what happened to the Russian skiers.
My father was a mountain climber in the Pacific NW and I grew up hearing stories about that. One of his climbs resulted in one death and his was an “almost death.” So it was a book I was particularly interested in. It is beautifully written and I enjoyed it immensely.
Excellent narrative of this tragedy. Solving this mystery took years.
It gave a plausible ending to a mystery that has intrigued me for years.
Incredible story of nine hikers who go missing in the Ural Mountains in Russia in February 1959. For decades, no one knew why the experienced hikers went missing, and were later found dead. The hikers were attempting to certify as Grade III hikers, and needed an endurance test for this certification.
Many theories for their deaths were put forth, …
In 2013 I stumbled upon a movie on a now defunct horror streaming website called “The Dyatlov Pass Incident.” While the movie was low budget compared to the summer blockbuster extravaganzas we are used to seeing, the cinematography was outstanding, the acting was great and the story was phenomenal. It’s one of the rare movies that I’ve actually …
Interesting to learn what really happened to these students.
If you’ve heard the enigmatic story of the lost Russian hikers and wondered what really happened, then you must read this book. The author goes to great lengths to find the real reason for the tragedy and to understand why the story was squelched by the government at the time. I only wish the families of the hikers could have this information, as …
I remembered the original event but not why it had happened. This filled in a lot of the missing pieces.
