THE DETECTIVE
DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms and her own family destroyed. She’s tough on criminals but fiercely loyal to her team.
HER PARTNER
DS Joseph Easter is the squeaky-clean member of the team. But his nickname “Holy Joe” belies his former life as a soldier. He has a daughter and an ex-wife who wants his attention.
THE SETTING
The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.

Nikki Galena and Joseph Easter and the team are back in this exciting entry into the series.
Ghoulies and ghosties are haunting the streets of the annual Dark Greenborough Fair. What used to be a fairly mild holiday, has turned into very big business for the little village. People come from all over the British Isles to partake in the horror-themed festivities. There is something for everyone: ghost walks, lectures, drinking and so on.
The police are shocked to receive a threatening anonymous missive promising murder. When the threat begins to be carried out, several people die and Nikki and her team are at a loss how to find the killer. Nikki’s Mom, Eve, and her friends get involved in the hunt for the killer too.
Because of the use of Latin and the wording in the note, Nikki and the other police officers believe the perpetrator is someone with a love of history and is highly educated. They brainstorm a potential list of suspects, as do Eve and her friends. As the death toll mounts, Joe begins to have an agenda of his own. He contacts one of his war buddies named Vinnie Silver and they discuss what to do.
This is a great novel. It follows the trail of a serial killer step-by-step. From the police officers’ frustrations to the very real actions they must take to track down the killer. I have no idea how Joy Ellis keeps coming up with such fresh and original ideas. This book is non-stop action, start to finish. I had a very hard time putting it down to go to bed. As Ms. Ellis’ books are, it is well written and plotted. One event follows another logically. The transitions are very well done and smooth. I didn’t spot any typos or grammatical errors. This author can write a fantastic police procedural and makes her characters real. I can hardly wait for the next in this series.
I want to thank NetGalley and Joffe Books for forwarding to me a copy of this very good book for me to read, enjoy and review.
The Dark Greenborough Festival is the most important event of the year. Costumes, eating, drinking, ghost walks, superstitions, this festival has a little something for not only the locals. but the flocks of tourists, as well.
A letter is sent to the police, promising death. Nikki and her team are prepared for just about anything … until the body count rises.
There’s been 4 deaths from what they think is alcoholic poisoning … as in someone is poisoning the drinks or the bottles of alcohol that are available. There’s no rhyme nor reason to these deaths, nothing that connects them, no clues.
If that’s not bad enough, even more deaths occur … each one killed differently, and more horrendous than the previous murder.
Who is doing this …and why? Why these particular victims?
Nikki and her team have their hands full. Routine maintaining of peace during this weekend is hard enough, but throw in a mix of petty crimes, looking for a serial killer, keeping the public ignorant of what’s happening … and this is a recipe for disaster.
Although 10th in this series, it is easily read as a stand alone. I highly recommend starting at the beginning. Nikki is a great character. Female, ferocious, and as tenacious as a bulldog. She has her issues, but nothing gets in the way of her job. DS Joseph Easter is a member of her team … and her partner in life. He’s an ex-soldier, still has moments of PTSD, and always has Nikki’s back. I really enjoy how they relate to each other at work ..and at play.
As usual with small villages, the residents are, in turn, quirky, secretive except when they aren’t, and on the whole, lends not only credibility to the story, but some humor as well. There are plenty of suspects and twists and turns that lead to an incredible ending.
Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Books n All Book Promotions / Netgalley. I received a digital copy of this crime fiction at no charge and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
They are gearing up for the three days of festivals that visitors have come for, very much like Halloween. With the mansions opening their doors for them with tales of the haunting within. A message comes into the precinct, to be aware how could it get worse. For Rory he has 4 bodies with high alcohol in three days, the drinks had been spiked, there fears had become a reality. Finding it was a new fake alcohol drink, like a rough whiskey taste.
A killer who loves old historical murders, a candle, a wick and a matchbook.
Is he a local man that has had a grudge. Time is not on there side, as the deaths are still happening. Packed with actions testing the limits of all.
