Like Mary E. Pearson’s Remnant Chronicles, Dance of Thieves is a thrill ride of a book. I love her complex world building and Pearson always creates characters I want to see more of. I hope there’s a sequel on the way!
I absolutely love Mary’s writing. Just like with the Kiss of Deception, Dance of Thieves sucked me right in from the get go! Also if you read the last trilogy, there is a glimpse of a few of the people from it! So I was fangirling about that!!
My favorite aspect of this book was the bond between Kazi and Jase—they were a bucket full of cuteness. Or course being on opposite sides of things caused disagreement and secrets, but it made the story more addicting. Kazi made me frustrated at times, but I understood how she worked because of the way she grew up. However, I also loved her for how she was. Although, Jase was my favorite!
The side characters were great and the world building was excellent. I seriously can’t wait to read the next book and see what happens. I can already tell some serious stuff is going to go down!!
I definitely recommend reading The Remnant Chronicles before this series. There is a lot of details that would have significant meaning if you read TRC first.
The world building is minimal (main reason to read TRC first) but still there. It’s expected to know it all already.
Character development was a bit blurry. I did find at points that the MC was going against everything she stood for even though it was a big point that she would never. So like a said, the line was blurry.
I really enjoyed the MC Kazi but at times I had to remind myself she is 17 and meant to be naive! I can’t expect her to be a teenager with an adult mind with that in mind, I still enjoyed how intelligent she was and how sharp she was. I always love a female MC who can kick ass and still be compassionate.
I enjoyed the friendship Kazi had with the girls. It was a ‘I would take a bullet for you’ vibe. Well in this case a blade.
The romance was very fast paced and not the slow burn I am used too however it was still quite enjoyable to read.
So many secrets in the relationship and it was bound to be exposed. I did love the way Jase open about himself and his feelings. That was different.
The amount of face slaps and gasps coming from me from the ending.
Overall, I liked it, and can’t wait to read the next book.
Favorite read so far of 2020!
I really enjoyed the audiobook. The two narrators are great and I liked how there was both a female and male narrator. The story was an interesting one to follow. Everyone is pretty much lying to everyone else. In the end those lies will have consequences. Some of the consequences are good and some are bad. It was an interesting story that was weaved and kept me captivated until the end. I look forward to reading book 2.
*I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.*
*I listened to this on audio*
I LOVED this story. The characters are fantastic and the romance between them is exceptional. I couldn’t put this book down, but I also didn’t want it to end. I am so excited for the next installment – the conclusion to this duology.
An excellent read of an alternative world! Loved the first 3 books as well…. !
I have no words
This book was AH-MAZING guys! After finishing The Remnant Chronicles at the end of September, I was eager to start this book and keep the good times going. This universe is the best and I’m so happy we’re getting another story set in this world. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect going into it, but this was the PERFECT combination of old and new and I looooooved it!!
First of all, the characters are A+++++
There are a few old characters to spark the interest of returning fans and the other new characters are excellent! Kazi, Wren, and Synove are basically the Powerpuff Girls and I was LIVING for it. They’re so bada** in their own unique ways and the bond they share was excellent to read about. I also really loved Jase and his family! Even though they’re pretty much the mafia, all of them are really layered and like Shrek, I enjoyed peeling those layers back and getting to know them better.
Am I completely, head-over-heels in love with Jase Ballenger now?? I’ll let you figure that out on your own when you read it… *Winks conspicuously*
And the world building was SPECTACULAR!!! Once again, Mary hit it out of the park. Even though this takes place in the Remnant Chronicles universe, it’s in a new town, so we get the best of the old while discovering everything new. I loved it! The histories and religions are so fascinating to me and now I’m having a lot of fun piecing it all together with the last books
*FINAL WORD*
I literally have nothing bad to say. It was SO GOOD!!!! EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS!!!!
First Comment: Wow, that was one intense, intense, story!!!
I will admit that at first I was a bit confused at the opening pages of the book. That was caused by my trying to keep track of the all the people in the story. The world building was also great but that even took me a while to sort through. It was a bit overwhelming for me at first, I wasn’t even sure if I was going to be able to finish the book.BUT I’m glad that I kept going because it was so work it. It helped even more when the story began to narrow down a bit more into two people. The legendary street thief known as “Ten” who became the fierce Rahtan premier fighter, Kazi will be one of those people focused on. Jase Ballenger is that son thrust into leadership as the new Patrei. And boy, is his plate ever full and he has no idea how more danger that there is lingering around him. There is a lot of enemies out there and they are bold!
Two other women of the special guard go with Kazi. Two VERY skilled warriors named, Synove and Wren. They not only supported Kazi but also added so much more to the story. As did a few other people as well. The Ballenger also had their family members to add to the story and there were quite a few of them.
This book is FULL of action, deceptions, dangers and even some good moments too. It’s not all death and destruction but there will be plenty of that too.
I will also add that it is one long book, and well worth the money that you pay for it.
It “ends” with some happiness but I guess it a H.E.A. for now kind of ending. Why? Because the door is left wide-open for further adventures. And looks like it’s going to be a dangerous one at that.
I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book via Netgalley and it knocked my socks off!
In The Remnant Chronicles Mary E. Pearson created a beautiful, lush but brutal fantasy world that I really enjoyed reading about. Dance of Thieves is a spin-off of that series and is set in the same universe, the story continues few years after the events of The Remnant Chronicles. As much as I enjoyed the Remnant series, I loved Dance of Thieves even more. I loved being back in that world and I really loved the new set of characters we are introduced to. I loved Kazi and Jase! There is so much swoony goodness, chemistry and kissing between them! But there is also a lot of tension and mistrust because they start as enemies and they do keep many secrets from each other. There are a lot of really interesting secondary characters too: Jase’s big family and Kazi’s fellow Rhatan soldiers. Even Lia and Rafe make an appearance in this book!
Even though Dance of Thieves is the spin-off of The Remnant Chronicles with a set of new characters and a new story line, for the best enhanced experience it’s best to read it after reading the series. Once you are immersed in that world you won’t be disappointed with Dance of Thieves!
