“I paused again, remembering what today was. The anniversary of the First Wave. The day the first American died from Makanza. The day our world changed forever.”
I went into this story completely blind. Never read the synopsis. Didn’t even see the cover. Immediately, I was drawn into the dark, sad world ravaged by a near-future plague and mutated characters reminiscent of the X-Men. The story follows Meghan, an introverted, socially awkward 23-year-old woman who is finally working for The Makanza Research Institute after obtaining two PhD’s. Not even one day on the job and she witnesses a horrific incident tied to harrowing secrets withheld from the private sector. Secrets that propel her toward decisions that may not only affect a viable vaccine, but also her future as a scientist.
“It wasn’t until weeks later that the Center for Disease Control understood just how unusual Makanza was, when the man began to Change.”
The world building is deliciously detailed and the characters are realistically complex, made even more so by Street’s inviting writing style. The result is a gut-clenching story that is infused with both heartbreak and hope.
Give Meghan and her journey a try. You won’t be disappointed! Trust me, you’ll be crowding around Street’s social media to clamor for news of when Meghan’s next adventure is released!
“Meeting one or two new people I could handle, but twenty? I’d never been comfortable in groups, I’m sure my vagabond, isolated childhood could be partly blamed for that, but twenty? All at once? Seriously?”
Um … Meghan, hate to break it to you, but you’re going to meet thousands of satisfied readers!
5 solid stars. Highly recommended!
Major book crush!
Compound 26: The Makanza Series, Book One was a great read by Krista Street. Dr. Meghan Forester is the youngest and most promising scientist that is now fighting against the Makanza virus. Compound 26 is a government controlled research facility, where Meghan will study the Kazzies. They are very rare survivors that carry the virus and now have supernatural powers. Meghan is disgusted with the brutal and unethical things that the Kazzies are going through. She never thought that she would fall in love with one of the Kazzies but in working with Davin, she finds that she has fallen for him. I enjoyed reading Meghan and Davin’s story and can’t wait to read more in this series.
I loved this post apocalyptic story. I absolutely love the story of Meghan and the Kazzies. The world building is fantastic and I loved learning more and more of the Kazzies and how the rest of the world survives now. Must read/listen. I loved this book!!
Definitely picking up the next book!
A fantastic read. The Author did a great job with the world building, and the Characters. This is way up there with Divergent. This would be a fantastic addition to Netflix.

Wow…Compound 26 is an enthralling and thrilling story. When I first started the series I wasn’t sure if I would like it but the writer surprised me and now I’m hooked. I loved the details and how relatable the characters are. There’s a lot of emotions within these pages. I felt as though I was right there with the characters as they searched for a cure, fought for what they believe in and found love.
I can’t wait to find out what happens next with Meghan, Davin and their friends.
*I also have the audiobook for this and I felt the narrator did a terrific job bringing the story to life.
I would recommend giving it a listen if you like audio.
Compound 26 (The Makanza, #1), my first WOW read/listen from author Krista Street. Well-written & enjoyable, I had to increase the speed to read it faster it was so good. Vanessa Moyen’s excellent narration made the 8-hour 56-minute read pass quickly. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. I definitely need to get more by this author & narrator. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
First book in a great series – binge-read all of them in a week! 🙂
