Will an assassination plot destroy her dream? Ever since she could make a fist, Kiriai has dreamed of one thing: to stand in front of her people in an official scrapper’s uniform. She is one fight away from making that happen; a brutal team battle against their rivals. If she loses, she’ll be sent back to the mundane life of a healer’s apprentice, banned forever from the arena. Sento, Kiriai’s … arena.
Sento, Kiriai’s sponsor and teammate, comes from a broken family victimized by those in power. Winning this battle is his chance to fight back, gain respect and protect those he loves—if only Kiriai doesn’t ruin it for both of them.
When Kiriai overhears a plot against the boss’s life, she has a choice to make. Will she fight to uncover the dangerous plot no one else believes is real? Or focus on the deciding battle she and Sento have worked their lives to qualify for?
Can Kiriai navigate vicious hood politics, the resentment of older scrappers and an assassination plot? She has the help of a wisecracking AI, her tech-savvy friend, a self-serving mentor and a mysterious gift. But will it be enough?

Love this book. It’s the second in the series. I can’t wait for the next!
one of my fav parts of that book 2 was the singing bowl the way it was written really gave depth to the character her world is much bigger than she thought and realisation that she does not know everything at 16 it was a pivotal her first real step to adulthood .
That’s how I see it
I received an ARC for an objective review.
So, simply put I picked this story up awhile back and was happy to find out there were more. The author was sneaky enough to get me hooked on another site with teasers and I regret nothing.
Much like the first book, I’m very happy to see the world expand through the perspective of the main character. Rather then an overview of the entire world, every scrap of knowledge is slowly unraveling a big picture which add’s a nice touch of curiosity for me. I even read the quotes at the start of every chapter which I may normally skim passed. Like many good series, as the main character ages we are also treated to the world changing with her viewpoint. It’s fascinating to see the understanding of consequences that comes with experience.
If you liked the first book, I’d honestly state the second book is even better. Can’t wait to read the third!
She has always wanted to be a scrapped and she is one fight away. Her teammate also wants to win. She hears of a plot of an assassination. She will be left wondering what to do. Will she get to stop the plot? Will she just concentrate on the fight? Will she even be able to do both? See what she decides
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I was tremendously thrilled with the level of improved skill Misty Z displayed from her first book in this series to the second. I cannot remember ever seeing this before in any other beginning author. The character development and traits built upon from her earlier book as well as the plot and overall ability to immerse the reader in her unfolding story was a true treat. A wonderful story for anyone lucky enough to give it a go.
I’m still loving this series! I just got notice from Amazon that the third book comes out October 1st, and I’m excited that I don’t have to wait a year for the next book!
This second book continues the saga of Kiriai as she deals with triumphs, betrayal, and an incredible shock. This revelation changes everything she thought she knew about her world. The secrets and atrocities of the City’s ruling class are still only hinted at, but more is being revealed. I really enjoyed the development of Kiriai and Yabban (her AI), as well as her interaction with her family and friends. I’m going to say that I think Sento is not right for her and has poor integrity, but we’ll see. I like that the series truly is for young adults: there’s no graphic (or otherwise) sex, instead an awkward (remember being a teenager?) but touching progression of a romantic relationship. Although after the ricing, well… Looking forward to the next book!
Combat Mind (World of Combat Dystopia Book 2) by Misty Zaugg is an awesome story. This is book number two in this awesome series and I have loved can not wait for the next book in the series to come out so I can read it. I highly recommend this story to all.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
**** SPOILER ALERT ****
Zaugg takes us back into the “Combat” universe and let’s us see the characters learning and growing as the author does a superlative job of continuing to world build.
I have some questions though.
What relationship will Kiriai have with Sento?
Will she finally see that Eigo loves her as more than a friend, or sister?
Will she gain control of her newly discovered “gift”?
Who are the “rats in the woodpile” threatening Jitaku hood?
To find the answers to these, and many more, questions buy the book!
In the interest of transparency: I was given a free review copy of this book. I am voluntarily sharing this review which is my own honest opinion.
