It is said that when war threatens the world, one individual will be selected by prophecy to lead the Shadow Warriors out of the Land of Mist and reclaim the freedom which has been stolen.

Shanti has grown up under the constant threat of war. Since she helped her people defeat a raiding party by using a special power, she’s been a hunted woman. Carrying rare abilities and an uncanny … uncanny fighting aptitude, Shanti is the only hope of salvation for her people. The problem is, she doesn’t believe in her own divinity, and when she flounders, she nearly fails in the duty hanging so heavy on her shoulders.
It seems like any other day when Sanders and his band of misfit boys find a foreign woman clinging to life in the wastelands. Oblivious to the weapon they now have in their possession, they are content to harbor the mysterious woman until she is well enough to continue her journey.
But when the war spreads its arms and lands on her borrowed doorstep, Shanti has no choice but to reveal her secrets, plunging her saviors into danger. If they band with her, they will face certain death. But to trade her to Xandre, the warlord desperate to add her to his war machine, would be to give up their entire way of life.
War is coming. The only choice becomes: Which side do you choose?

The only reason this wasn’t read within one or two days was that I had several arc reading commitments to complete at the same time. Quite simply this was a book I didn’t want to put down, one full of tension, angst and peril, with some truly wonderful world building to boot. I adored Shanti, loved her irreverent humour, her toughness, her determination and her willingness to cry. Whilst we get several other view points, she is the main character of this book, and one who easily carries the story on her slender but strong shoulders.
A powerful story with a well thought out and cohesive plot that hooked it’s claws into my soul and didn’t ever let go. It is imbued with so many wonderful moments, some replete with humour, others that are deep, filled with troubled self reflection and yet more where Shanti challenges the pompous males around her with her sharp wit and sparkling repartee. Those quieter moments provided a perfect foil to the more hectic, high velocity, action sequences and gave the story a feeling of balance.
My words simply can’t do justice to this absolutely amazing opening book of what looks set to be an awe inspiring series.
I loved this series and couldn’t put it down! Absolute must read!
Loved this book. Shanti is such an incredible heroine. The book sucks you in and doesn’t let go. It leaves you with a lot of unanswered questions but luckily for you the whole series is now out and all of the books are great.
‘Chosen’ is book one in K.F Breene’s The Warrior Chronicles. Told in multiple POVs.
Shanti is the last chance for her people, she must travel to her lost relations and get help. With the Shadow People she should be able to get revenge against the Being Supreme. But first she must survive the barren lands, find shelter and food.
Another great book by Ms Breene, very engaging, action packed, and fast paced. Once again this author shows that you can have a strong, independent, kicka** heroine without a love interest to have a successful story.
I was unsure of what to expect going into this series, all I knew was it had a bada** heroine, a determined hero, and fighting against odds storyline. But just knowing that I was intrigued and excited to read it. And I’ll tell you this… I am hooked and I loved each and every moment.
I’ve reviewed this in more detail on my blog, but I’d give it 3.5 stars. It was a slow start for me but once I got invested (around the 50% mark), I had to know what was going to happen. It is book 1 in a series so expect there to be a hook to keep you invested!
Chosen kicks off a strong fantasy series with a kick-ass heroine and a fun romantic thread that builds over time. Shanti is the destined savior who struggles to believe in herself and the path laid out for her through a lot of loss and sacrifice. Cayan is an established leader who has no idea of his magical potential. Their battles (against each other and against their enemies) are a fun read. But the actual fighting was so well done and engaging, it deserves it’s own shout out.
Chosen
The Warrior Chronicles, Book 1
By: K. F. Breene
Narrated by: Caitlin Davies
This book takes the reader to a very unique world with a variety of settlements, some violent. Our gal of the story is from a town that has an occasional child born with a gift. A way to use the mind. Certain people want to get these people with gifts to use them as weapons. After her village and town is destroyed, she was able to escape. Over a year later, she is found starving and dehydrated by another group. Come to find out, she finds out there is a guy with the gift there. Lots of action, great characters, and world building!
Narration terrific!
Having read Breene’s Demigods of San Francisco series not long ago, I hoped that I could dive into another completed series of hers with the same enthusiasm for the plot and pace that I’d come to expect from her writing. I was not disappointed.
In every way that Alexis (from Demigods) was unsure of herself and her powers, Shanti wass simply badass, confident and unapologetic. You couldn’t help but admire her determination despite her past and the odds she faced in the mounting threat to her kind and the world she strove to protect. Yet, despite that, she was vulnerable, and often standing alone, even when others would be happy to take up arms alongside her.
I loved every character we crossed paths with, loved the team Shanti pieced together in building the strengths that so many either disregarded or couldn’t seem to bring to the surface. I was frustrated that she was so hell-bent on being alone that she fought the kindness and the strength offered to her by Cayan and the others. I hope that she can learn to rely on those around her more as we move forward.
From the start, this book gripped me with its action and its heroes… and while I desperately desired more in the romance, I know Breene can weave that thread well with its slow burn, so I’m eager to see where things go from here for all involved.
I would definitely recommend diving into this series.
Loved Shanti, Cayan, and all the well-written characters in the action-packed fantasy tale. I loved that both hero and heroine were equally as kick ass. And I cannot wait to continue their adventure in the next book.
My first reading experience with K.F. Breene was with a light-hearted, whimsical, though still deadly, paranormal romance. The Chosen, Book 1 of the Warrior Chronicles, introduced me to a very different fantasy novel. Shanti is not whimsical…at all. But she is a warrior, one who will do anything for her people. Great writing, and a hard and sometimes tragic journey, a journey filled with loyalty, trust, and love. More than worth the adventure through the entire series. And it’s worth it to see Shanti’s transformation.
Great series.
K.F. Breene has created an epic new fantasy world where old world life, morals, and fighting collide with a foreigner deigned as the Chosen one with unimaginable power, honor, snark and sexuality. Fast paced, with a wide variety of characters, mind sets and fighting styles and no lack of sexy hero’s. This is shaping up to be an amazing new series by a talented author!
Honestly, it was hard for me to get into this book. I think it is well written, but I probably wouldn’t recommend it to someone who likes the same type of books that I do.
