This is a powerful true story of one young girl’s struggle to survive the state-care-system in the 70s and 80s. Amelia has just one wish, to make it through to adulthood and hold her destiny in her own hands. This is a harrowing true story, one of survival and human strength. Amelia has been tragically separated from all her siblings, never to see them again for many years. She is moved from one … one children’s home to another until finally, it’s just too much for her to bear. Amelia starts to wonder about the peace and finality of her own death.

I liked it and now want to read the next one that follows
Unfortunately, Amelia’s story is happening all over the world. Groups like the one I am a part of, Chosen, continue to raise funds for adoption, fostering and orphan care. We need to do better by the Amelia’s of the world!
This is sad because it’s a true story but, in the end she overcomes her past enough to move on.
Sad story but this story is not well written. It keeps repeating a lot of the same sentences just reworded.
One of the best true stories I have ever read. Ms.Torren brought you the real way some children are treated. Everyone should read this book, including the teens. It is a page turner.
It’s a gut wrenching painful childhood for a group of wonderful children who lived with a mentally ill mother who never , ever received the help required to make aher a responsible mother.
Riveting book, I couldn’t put it down.
Kept me interested thru all of it. Sad to think so many kids go they thus. Anxious to read her follow up book.
This book is an excellent depiction of how children who are raised in family’s with mental illness and substance are negatively impacted over their entire childhoods. The author has a unique way of telling a tragic story, but still including aspects of her life that were happy. This factor contributes to her resilliency and perseverance through …
Enjoy story, like the historical theme romance.
Excellent read
A great story of how individual determination can overcome the tragedies of an abusive childhood.
The book is very sad, appears to be a true story. I read to engulf myself in the characters of book, needless to say, no one would want to be any of the characters in this book. I kept reading hoping to find that surely there would be some happiness in the book. There is not. Feel very sorry for person, and for any children who end up in child …
It was good but i thought poorly written.
This true story broke my heart. It really opened my eyes to what life was like for the lack of rights for children that were forced into the system.
Love true stories.
Good read
A true and sad story about childhood lost
To think a parent could be so mean is heartbreaking
I feel for the author, I really do. This tragic story is one that should be told. Unfortunately the writing was poor, repetitive, disjointed and unemotional. The same true story could have been written in a way that grabs the reader and makes them “feel” what Amelia was feeling at the time.
