World War II intrudes on the pastoral life of the Yorkshire veterinarian and #1 New York Times–bestselling author of All Creatures Great and Small. Only a couple of years after settling into his new home in northern England, James Herriot is called to war. In this series of poignant and humorous episodes, the great veterinarian shares his experiences training with the Royal Air Force, pining … Royal Air Force, pining for a pregnant wife, and checking in on the people back home who made his practice so fascinating. As the young men of Yorkshire are sent into battle and farmers consider the broader world they’re a part of, Herriot reflects on the lives—human and animal alike—that make his home worth fighting for.

This series made me laugh out loud at some of the stories. Wonderful writer.
I believe I’ve read most of this author’s book 30 years ago, but I downloaded this one anyway because I needed something to improve my mood in these anxiety-filled times. I smiled, I laughed, and pictured myself in his English settings.
What is left to say about James Herriot’s books? They are incredible. In a few seconds of reading you are right there with Jim in Yorkshire in a freezing cold diary barn, arm up to your elbow in a cow, or drilling in RAF training with a flight instructor that is going bonkers. Although he does not down play the rigors of working as a vet or a …
This book is wonderful, compassionate, and a great feel good story.
James Herriott, AKA Alf Wight, has a real gift for taking the reader along as he goes out on farm calls in the years starting with WWII, and finishes up in the 1960s. This book in the series lets us see an era in the Yorkshire Dales which is long gone. Its as much about the people as it is their beloved pets and cantankerous livestock. I envy …
I read this book many years ago and it is still one of my favorites.
I love anything by James Herriot. His stories make me laugh out loud, cry, and cheer for him. I recommend the whole series. I have hard copies of all.
Re read this and enjoyed it again
I love all of James Harriot’s books. Great writing, witty, great during this time of “lock down” .

J. H. Had a way of writing of his life as a country veterinarian that truly brought it to life – with all its joys, sorrows and whit. He shared with us his love for all creatures and the land. His books are a treasure that I passed on to my children and now my grandkids. Some chapters have been made into children’s books. Years ago public …
Very interesting. Sometimes gets a little too clinical for a lay person but nonetheless it’s a good book. Loved the characters!
I have probably read this book half a dozen times…that is how good it is. There are certain spots that are so funny for me. But it is just really a good read…about being a vet in rural England.
wonderful
James Herriott’s books are ones I have read over and over again. I would challenge anyone to read one chapter and not want to go on to finish the book. Heartwarming stories populated by wonderful characters, both human and animal, written by a real veterinarian who also has an exquisite gift of language.
Love all of James Herriot books.
Read al of James Herriots books. That’s really all I have to say. They are classics.
I loved this whole series! Totally recommend the entire series.
Love the whole series. Wonderful look at that time period before all the modern medicines. Wonderful characters.
All of Dr Herriot’s books are captivating and fascinating; they are non-fiction accounts of his experiences as a veterinarian in England. It’s about his life experiences with the real people as well as their animals. I cherished every word and read countless passages again and again to savor the experience. My mind made an on-going movie as I …
A wonderfully rendered group of stories about the animals a caring vet treats over his career. The tales are moving, inspirational, humorous, and well told. It convinces you of the humanity of the animals we count as our pets and possessions.
