World War II intrudes on the pastoral life of the Yorkshire veterinarian and #1 New York Times–bestselling author of All Creatures Great and Small. Only a couple of years after settling into his new home in northern England, James Herriot is called to war. In this series of poignant and humorous episodes, the great veterinarian shares his experiences training with the Royal Air Force, pining … Royal Air Force, pining for a pregnant wife, and checking in on the people back home who made his practice so fascinating. As the young men of Yorkshire are sent into battle and farmers consider the broader world they’re a part of, Herriot reflects on the lives—human and animal alike—that make his home worth fighting for.

James Harriot is a must read, funny and just plain enjoyable.
Mr. Herriot writes about everyday life as a surgical vet in Yorkshire England along with his stint as an RAF recruit. His characters come to life through his humorous and sometimes heart rending accounts of everyday life.
Loved it!
I have read this and all of Herriots books multiple times. Always a treat.
Only. Harriet could surpass Herriot. Nuff said.
This a definite feel-good book. I love all of James Harriot’s books. I read them when I want to relax or cheer up. That’s not to say that every vet’s visit has a happy ending. There are some that make me cry. But overall, they are great books!
I’m thoroughly enjoying this book! I don’t want it to end, so I know I’ll be reading more from this author.
I watched the PBS special “All Creatures Great & Small” I liked it so much, I’m working my way thru the novels it was based on. Very satisfying reading
Good wholesome story with dry British humor.
In Book Three of James Herriot’s memoirs, he is called to war.. In this series of poignant and humorous episodes, the great veterinarian shares his experiences training with the Royal Air Force, pining for a pregnant wife, and checking in on the people back home who made his practice so fascinating.
All the books in this series are warm, real and wonderful
Every one of this series takes me back to a time I didn’t even live in. They are relaxing books that give the brain a respite, a rest, from our world of today. Reading them is like laying in a hammock on a sunny day with eyes closed listening to the birds and insects.
Every character, human or animal, is fascinating!! Sometimes the stories are humorous, sometimes tragic, but always captivating!
I can read Herriot’s books over and over. They are cozy and warm. Also a step back into the past, when things were simpler. Especially good for animal lovers!
I love all the James Herriot books for their portrayal of the life of a Yorkshire country vet. They are realistic and entertaining at the same time, sometimes humorous, occasionally tragic, but in general I find them uplifting and I really enjoy reading them … over and over.
Beautiful, warm hearted book. Excellent to read now during the pandemic. I think you’ll have a warm feeling in your heart… exactly what we need during this difficult time.
Great stories and writing, warm and witty writing
I love all James Herriott books. He is a master story teller. As a veterinarian he deals with all sorts of farmers and even his boss and the other residents of the place where he lives are characters. At times he stops to relish the beauty of the Yorkshire landscape and at times the end of the story has a funny twist.
Lots of discussion about veterenary topics. Very little about WW II RAF service.
The author is obviously a very caring person, a competent vet, a terrific observer, and a good enough writer to put that all together in a book of heartwarming stories.
