The sequel to All Creatures Great and Small continues the adventures of veterinarian James Herriot in a small town in Yorkshire, England.
After his first day on the job, James Herriot’s mentor warns him that the life of a country veterinarian is full of small triumphs and big disasters, but that he’d never be bored. From night visits to drafty barns during freezing northern England winters, to … freezing northern England winters, to the beautiful vitality of rural life in the summertime, to the colorful menagerie of animals — and their owners — that pass through his office, Herriot experiences new challenges and joys every day. In these pages, Herriot trains under his eccentric boss Siegfried Farnon in a rustic English village, courts the woman that becomes his wife, and meets the people he would come to write about for a lifetime.

I would recommend all of James Harriot’s books. Very well written and a joy to read.
Herriott, in each of his books, shares a soul of a servant with some of the most deft and descriptive prose ever put to paper. When you finish any of his anecdotes you will be unable to argue that the animals were are surrounded by, and depend on, have no soul of their own. It is my favorite book of all time! Love all James Harriott’s books
One of my favorite authors of all time. Always a good read. I have re-read all of James Herriot’s books over the years and they stand the test of time.
I’ve been reading this book for years. It’s a book you can read over and over. It’s true stories about a veterinarian who loves his job and his countryside. Some are funny and some are sad, but all are real.
I loved this book. Read it long ago. The whole series is wonderful. Great characters human and animals. Have since been able to visit Yorkshire. The author so captures the setting
A must read for anyone interested in becoming a veterinarian.
I have loved all of the James Herriot books. He’s a country vet in England in the 1930s and 40s and his animal stories are wonderful.
One of my “go to” writers. Every chapter is a story within its self – it’s a great read.
Outstanding!
All Things Bright and Beautiful is James Herriot’s memoir of his years a country vet in 1930s Yorkshire. His style reminds me very much of both the Gilbreths and Edmund Love, so regular readers of this blog will know that I loved it.
Herriot leads his readers on a gentle stroll through the hills and dales, jovially recalling his more memorable …
great book!
James Herriot… like an old friend I’d love to sit down with by the evening fire.
