From a Yorkshire veterinarian and a “wise and wonderful writer”: The New York Times bestseller and basis for the beloved BBC series of the same name (The Boston Globe). In the rolling dales of Yorkshire, a simple, rural region of northern England, a young veterinarian from Sunderland joins a new practice. A stranger in a strange land, he must quickly learn the odd dialect and humorous ways of … dialect and humorous ways of the locals, master outdated equipment, and do his best to mend, treat, and heal pets and livestock alike. This witty and heartwarming collection, based on the author’s own experiences, became an international success, spawning sequels and winning over animal lovers everywhere. Perhaps better than any other writer, James Herriot reveals the ties that bind us to the creatures in our lives.

Excellent book!
This is a beautiful book, wonderful, insightful just special.
James Harriot’s life stories come to life in this book. The stories are fun to read!
I loved it!
Years ago, after seeing the TV series on PBS, I read the series of books that inspired the television production. Aside from the charm and wit, I found them strongly evocative of the county of Yorkshire, which at that time I had never visited. (I live in the US). In fact, at that time I had never been to the UK.
Within a year my wife and I …
After all these years, it still is inspiring.
I love all his books. The interactions between him and his boss or his farmer customers are very interesting and sometimes funny. It also shows the dedication and hard, at times uncomfortable work, often called in the night of his veterinarian work. Yet at the same time there are descriptions of his enjoyment of the beauty of the landscape. It is …
I read this book when I was in high school and loved it. I felt the urge to revisit it this holiday season and fell in love with it all over again. So humorous, touching, entertaining, and a lovely view into another place and time. Great read!
All James Herriot’s books are great. I just wish there were more.
Love his books
Great writing and great stories.
James is a great author, I have read them all. If you like animals then you will enjoy his books. James provides a background to the beginning of veterinarian medicine in England. Going out all hours of the day or night and the trail and tribulations.
very enjoyable books.
I love this book. It’s one of my favorites!
Not being a huge animal lover, I wasn’t sure if I would like these books. But when a college CHEMISTRY professor urged me to try them, I finally did and loved them. They are beautifully, touchingly written stories about people and relationships and the English countryside. And their pets. Story-telling at it’s best.
Read this series 40 plus years ago. Depending on your preferences this was a wonderful series.
I love all the James Marriott books…especially love TrickyWoo
ALL of the books in this series are fantastic, and so was the TV series!
Master writer sharing personal experiences that beat fiction – some laugh-out-loud and some bringing tears.
I love James Herriot’s books!
A great author, a great series. I have read and re-read all of James Herriot’s books over the years and love them all.
