From a Yorkshire veterinarian and a “wise and wonderful writer”: The New York Times bestseller and basis for the beloved BBC series of the same name (The Boston Globe). In the rolling dales of Yorkshire, a simple, rural region of northern England, a young veterinarian from Sunderland joins a new practice. A stranger in a strange land, he must quickly learn the odd dialect and humorous ways of … dialect and humorous ways of the locals, master outdated equipment, and do his best to mend, treat, and heal pets and livestock alike. This witty and heartwarming collection, based on the author’s own experiences, became an international success, spawning sequels and winning over animal lovers everywhere. Perhaps better than any other writer, James Herriot reveals the ties that bind us to the creatures in our lives.

I enjoyed his descriptions of the countryside where he worked. He also gave insight into the lives of the farmers he encountered in his practice. I am sure there was a good deal of exaggeration in his stories but it was a lighthearted book to read. Gave me such an appreciation of the lives of veterinarians in his time.
James Herriot had an amazing way of putting the most mundane, everyday activities in a delightfully, laugh-out-loud fun read.I enjoyed every single page and wanted more at the end.
I love James Herriot’s books. The only thing I did not like was his use of God. Maybe that is how they spoke in England at the time, but still did not like it. However, I liked this series. At times, they are funny, always entertaining, and I liked Herriot’s integrity. I read these books years ago and they are on my list to re-read.
Absolutely loved all of his books! He paints a picture with his words. You can see the characters he’s talking about. You feel like you are watching him and meeting the people
I read the series years ago and was excited to see it’s an audiobook. So many of the little vignettes in this book have stayed with me over the many years since I first read it. I love James’s solid integrity and his sense of the ridiculous. He’s a keen observer of human quirkiness, which makes the other players fun. Thoroughly enjoyed it again. …
So funny yet touching
I first met James Herriott’s world when I stumbled across the BBC series. Because I loved the series I searched for the book. I read this book and its sequels many times each. It’s the heartwarming story of a real-life British veterinarian and his practice in the Yorkshire Dales. The author draws wonderful sketches of fascinating characters he …
I bought and read Herriott’s first three books, including this one, at the same time and read them in sequence. They were certainly pleasant and easy reads with a likeable protagonist. And since they are a relatively famous part of English literature, I am happy to have experienced them and to have some first-hand knowledge of what they are …
Wonderful book as are all of his books in the series. Disappointed when I finished the last one.
Because of the back-country brogue, very hard to read.
Herriot places you right in his story; you feel the people, hear the animals, and smell the countryside. Revisited this while researching a novel and fell in love all over again. Masterfully written, engaging, and tactile.
Harriot tells like it was and tells it well
Wonderful book!
