From a Yorkshire veterinarian and a “wise and wonderful writer”: The New York Times bestseller and basis for the beloved BBC series of the same name (The Boston Globe). In the rolling dales of Yorkshire, a simple, rural region of northern England, a young veterinarian from Sunderland joins a new practice. A stranger in a strange land, he must quickly learn the odd dialect and humorous ways of … dialect and humorous ways of the locals, master outdated equipment, and do his best to mend, treat, and heal pets and livestock alike. This witty and heartwarming collection, based on the author’s own experiences, became an international success, spawning sequels and winning over animal lovers everywhere. Perhaps better than any other writer, James Herriot reveals the ties that bind us to the creatures in our lives.

If you have never read the books written by James Herriot, you must, especially if you are an animal lover. Read this book the first time many years ago and reread every year. Loved it, will always love it. Laugh on one page, teary on the next. A heart warming series of life on the other side of the pond as experienced by a young veterinarian just starting out.
A very good book and very interesting.
A fun read, good tale. Cross of reality and a yarn. Reads easy, entertains. Alert thepeople are the stars, not animals.
A bit dated (hence four stars) but very good if you want an inside look at the lives of country vets of earlier years.
This is an utterly charming travelogue through the hills and villages of England a century ago, as country vets served the farmers and common folk whose beloved animals needed a kindly hand. Herriot’s writing is often poignant, and then veers delightfully into witty hilarity as he has to deal with his mercurial and often insane boss, Siegfried. …
One of my all-time favorite books!
James Herriott has a wonderful way of communicating his everyday life, and the interesting characters and animals he interacts with daily.Topnotch for an entertaining read!
Loved it!
James Herriot is just starting out in veterinary medicine. He is green behind the ears as many of the local farmers like to remind him. James has the biggest heart and the kindest soul. He wants to do his very best and it shows.
Ok…I am behind. I have never read this book. So, when I saw it was a show on Masterpiece Theatre, I knew I must read it …
Fantastic read. I was transported instantly to the Yorkshire Dales and found myself not really wanting to leave. Utterly enchanting.
A wonderful view of life in a rural farming community of England in the 1930’s. The writing is excellent, entertaining and true, written by the vetearían who lived the stories.
I love this book! Yorkshire, James, Tristan, and Siegfried and all their furry patients and their owners become almost part of the family.
Terrific book. Of course it’s realistic, as it’s based on true life events….but the writing is smooth and well dine. Highly recommend it as well as the others in the series.
A great storytelling about James Herriott’s experience as a country vet. He guides us all through his work, the people he meets and their impact in his life. A great book that I enjoyed very much when I read it some many years ago and a better audiobook with Christopher Timothy’s beautiful voice.
Enjoyed this book in the time of a pandemic. It made me smile, laugh and was generally upbeat. Had not read this author before but intend to read his work again.
This series of books about a Yorkshire veterinary practice in The 1930s- 1940s has humor and great heart. I especially like that the author wrote dialogue in the local dialect so we could hear the accents and idioms. He also imparts a great deal of history on an everyday level.
The television series (mid 1970s, I believe) did it justice, but don’t …
The series is a favorite, would happily read again…
What an uplifting saga of this endearing vet in his life in the English countryside. It is so positive. The whole series is a heart warming experience especially during these trying times.

Of course I started with Book two. But here I finally got to Book one and none of the rest mattered. I think I’m glad I waited this long to listen to this fun classic story written by a real rural veterinarian in the 1930s …
