From a Yorkshire veterinarian and a “wise and wonderful writer”: The New York Times bestseller and basis for the beloved BBC series of the same name (The Boston Globe). In the rolling dales of Yorkshire, a simple, rural region of northern England, a young veterinarian from Sunderland joins a new practice. A stranger in a strange land, he must quickly learn the odd dialect and humorous ways of … dialect and humorous ways of the locals, master outdated equipment, and do his best to mend, treat, and heal pets and livestock alike. This witty and heartwarming collection, based on the author’s own experiences, became an international success, spawning sequels and winning over animal lovers everywhere. Perhaps better than any other writer, James Herriot reveals the ties that bind us to the creatures in our lives.

So the question of the week is: “What’s a book that changed your life or inspired you?” There have been many, of course, but this was one of the first that truly changed my way of thinking about something. As the child of an abusive father who bred hunting dogs for profit, I was never allowed to have a dog as a pet (nor any other animal). They …
I really like James Herriot’s sense of humor and the way he describes to the reader both the animals and the people in his experiences. A great read.
It is story of a veterinarian who is truly dedicated to caring for and loving animals. It is not a money making business for him but a lifetime of devotion.
Laughed out loud with some of these wonderful stories of a vet in rural England and his encounters with animals and their owners. Timeless humor on all the continuing 3 books. Lovely, decent people.
What a marvelous treat this book is! Reading it was like stepping back into a less hectic time. It gave me a fresh perspective on life in all its many forms, since all life is revered in his tales. The quirks and foibles of man and beast only add to more color to the stories. The way the author confides all his experiences to the reader without …
Such sweet and charming tales of the young country vet in the Yorkshire Dales in England. A reread for me.
I have laughed so hard reading this book and would also recommend all the books in this series. Nothing compares. I love it!
I absolutely loved this book. I can’t believe I haven’t read it before now. He paints beautiful word picture for the Yorkshire countryside. Parts of it were so funny, I kept my husband awake laughing.
Loved it especially since I recently watched the pbs TV version
I loved, loved, loved the book. I know it has been very popular over the years but I think seeing the series on PBS got me interested in reading it. So glad I did, I even purchased the follow-up book, ” All Things Bright and Beautiful” which I’m enjoying just as much. I think I’m so taken by them because they make you feel really good in a …
One of my all time favorite books (along with all the James Herriot books). I laughed til I cried and I learned a lot about animals and how to care for them. There is a tremendous amount of informative and useful information contained in this and the other books by this author and it is imparted to the reader through some of the funniest stories …
A wonderful book of a veterinarian’s care and love for animals, while he begins his venture. Well written. Easily readable.
Absolutely loved this book.
Loved it. I used to watch the series on TV a long time ago on the Public Channel.
Love this and all the others. Have read each numerous times
Have loved all of his books!
Herriot includes thoroughly entertaining stories of daily life as a rural veterinarian in Yorkshire. I have laughed at his comical predicaments and teared up at some heart rending situations he recalled. This was an enjoyable read!
This book, the beginning of a very successful series, follows the mostly true adventures and loves of a veterinary doctor in Northern England in the 1930s through the 1970s. This is the book that inspired me to write about animals and realistic situations. I’ve always loved animals, so this book opened up an opportunity to write about my …
I had never read this series, but when I watched the Masterpiece drama on PBS I was intrigued. The book is even better than the screen version of the story. I look forward to reading more of Herriott’s books.
The life of a new rural vet. His life is very interesting. Some humor, some romance. Hope to read more of these and I’m watching on pbs but it is not totally following the book and the books are always better.
