From a Yorkshire veterinarian and a “wise and wonderful writer”: The New York Times bestseller and basis for the beloved BBC series of the same name (The Boston Globe). In the rolling dales of Yorkshire, a simple, rural region of northern England, a young veterinarian from Sunderland joins a new practice. A stranger in a strange land, he must quickly learn the odd dialect and humorous ways of … dialect and humorous ways of the locals, master outdated equipment, and do his best to mend, treat, and heal pets and livestock alike. This witty and heartwarming collection, based on the author’s own experiences, became an international success, spawning sequels and winning over animal lovers everywhere. Perhaps better than any other writer, James Herriot reveals the ties that bind us to the creatures in our lives.

I loved “All Creatures Great and Small,” as well as all the other books James Herriot wrote. He’s a master storyteller and has a way with words.
I’ve had three guide dogs now–two Labradors and a golden retriever. Thanks to my kind-hearted daughter, we’ve welcomed two stray cats into our family. Before my daughter was born, I rescued parrots. Sometimes I had as many as sixteen birds in my home. I took them in when they’d been neglected, abused, or abandoned by their previous owners. I got …
I absolutely loved it. One of my favorite books over the years. The characters and animals and adventures will stay with you long after you are finished reading. And..you will laugh out loud. Truly wonderful read.
I have read all James’s books.
All I can say is that this is a wonderful book, full of engaging tales that would appeal to many, especially animal lovers. Highly recommended!
Heartwarming
All of James Herriot’s books are wonderful! Especially if you love animals!
All Creatures Great and Small is the first of three books that comprise James Herriot’s memoirs of his time as a country vet in Yorkshire, circa 1930. A few months ago I read the second book, All Things Bright and Beautiful, loved it, and decided I really needed to read Creatures (and the third book, All Things Wise and Wonderful, which is still …
This is a truly great memoir of country veterinarian practice in England, beginning a few years prior to World War 2. I have read all of his series, some of the individual books repeatedly. He is the inspiration for my own book about country medical practice in rural Indiana in the 1970’s.
A wonderful recounting of the life of a country vet in England. Like the book better than the TV series.
A Classic for the ages. This series will stay in my library.
This series of books will leave you howling with laughter and a joyful heart! Incredible series. Read them all in order!
