Rachel Wheeler finds herself alone in the city, where violent survivors known as “Zapheads” roam the streets, killing and destroying. Her only hope is to reach the mountains, where her grandfather, a legendary survivalist, established a compound in preparation for Doomsday.
Other survivors are fleeing the city, but Zapheads aren’t the only danger. Rogue bands of military soldiers want to impose their own order in the crumbling ruins of civilization. When Rachel discovers a 10-year-old boy, she vows to care for him even at the risk of her own life.
And the Zapheads are evolving, developing communal skills even as they lay waste to the society they will eventually replace.

Page-turner. Unrealistic.
This is the best written book of the year
** After: The Shock **
Ok! So I finally got to finish this book. I’m gonna be honest, I’m a sucker for post apocalyptic writings and this one has a great premise to it.
After a series of solar flares knock out the power grid, and turn millions of people into “Zapheads.” Survivors are left trying to defend themselves from the Zapheads who are …
read and forget your troubles
Different way of ending world order
Great read.
This story is great if you are a zombie lover and enjoy stories of this type. Lots of unknowns, twists, gore, but then you need that kinda stuff if you want to make it interesting, and this book does. Hope it never happens in my lifetime, actually in anybody’s lifetime, way too nasty stuff.
A wonderful post-apocalyptic novel!! I can’t wait to read more.
This was a great book about what the world could be like if there was a world wide disaster.
I just love reading about “end of the world as we know it” scenarios. What would I do in such a situation as the characters in this book have to deal with. Could I do it? The whole series was a page turner all the way through. I still have a couple of the books to read and will be sorry when I’ve finished them.
Amazing read. I couldn’t put it down. I’ve read the first 4 books in the series in just one week. This is an edit. Finished the 5th book the following day. This author is getting my lunch money budget. I may be hungry but I’m well entertained.
Great start to a series.
A post apocalypse novel that takes place in North Carolina. This apocalypse was caused by solar blasts. People change and try to survive, many die. I didn’t care for the ending. That is why I gave a lower rating. 3 1/2 stars.
Would give zero stars if I could. Awful read, boring. Waste of time.
???????
It’s like a watered-down mix of The Walking Dead, Night of the Comet, with some Captain Trips from The Stand. I just finished it and I’m still not sure what the author was trying to say, if anything with the different survival scenarios, or just to give the reader an adventurous ride through apocalyptic USA. I don’t believe I’ll be reading any …
The reader had a very monotone speaking voice which I didn’t like. And the book was kind of wordy and this was distracting not appealing. I was confused by some of the details about the “zapheads”. I finished it but not sure if I will read the sequel.
The Shock (After, #1)

Peggy Geiger’s review
Genre: Post-Apocalyptic
The story begins after massive solar storms wipe out most of humanity along with the electrical grid. There are also primal zombie-like survivors called “Zapheads”. Zapheads have been affected by the solar flares but are now beginning to transform with …
Strong thought provoking of what if shtf. Zombies aside human nature is scary enough!
Held my attention every minute! Loved that it was so unpredictiable!
