NATIONAL BESTSELLER • In this witty and warm-hearted account, Peter Mayle tells what it is like to realize a long-cherished dream and actually move into a 200-year-old stone farmhouse in the remote country of the Lubéron with his wife and two large dogs. He endures January’s frosty mistral as it comes howling down the Rhône Valley, discovers the secrets of goat racing through the middle of … through the middle of town, and delights in the glorious regional cuisine. A Year in Provence transports us into all the earthy pleasures of Provençal life and lets us live vicariously at a tempo governed by seasons, not by days.

Fun read
not his best
I have never enjoyed a memoir more. Mayle’s anecdotes range from funny to endearing to downright mouthwatering when he discusses the food he and most French people so enjoy. This book is a foodie’s delight!
Great book, couldn’t put it down*
Enjoyed it very much, would like to know how much France has changed since.
I enjoyed this book. It inspired me to want to travel to France. Have been there twice & would love to return again, & stay for about a month.
Disarmingly Charming
Perhaps a perfect book to remember what we’ve lost during the time of the pandemic.
Perfect book for those sheltering at home. And a perfect read for Francophiles. Great story, very funny.
An interesting read!
Loved the tales of local characters, weather, systems. Immersion in a place I will likely never see myself but experienced in the read.
Read this book years ago and is worth a re read in this time where we are home bound. Lively and fun and very well written.
One of my all time favorite books! Sad that we won’t get more from Mr. Mayle, his adventures through the South of France were amazing!
Love Peter Mayle and love this book!
A YEAR IN PROVENCE was recommended by the first person we met on a very special wine-tasting/gourmet trip to that section of France, and an excellent recommendation is was. In addition to the joy of Mayle’s charming descriptions, it rounded out my new appreciation for the food and wines we experienced and the extensive passion for detail involved …
Truly, one of my favorite books of all time. I shared it with my best friend, who was an award winning newspaper editor. He immediately went to the library and got everything Peter Mayle wrote to date and read it in a week. The book is a classic. Pour up a glass of wine with a plate of cheese, olives and a piece of baguette… and delight …
When we lived in Luxembourg in 2008 and 2009, we visited Paris every few months; a two-hour train ride. Then I started writing novels that take place at least partially in Paris, and so I’ve visited a few times for research, and another couple of times on book tour. So I’ve been to Paris about 10 times in the past decade, and have seen plenty of …
Great travel memoir set in Provence, France. I enjoyed the idiosyncratic everyday adventures between the author and the locals who are deeply steeped in tradition. This page-turner will have you laughing out aloud with plumbing problems to a stone table debacle. Highly recommended.
Enchanting memoir of a year in Provence, learning the language, the area, the food, the wine, and the neighbors. Peter Mayle and his wife, Jennie, move to Provence from London and set out to renovate an old home. Along the way, they learn that contractors don’t move with any scheduled regularity, that there are many unseen problems, and that …
I can’t believe I read the whole thing, This book was boring to me. My sister, however, loved it. I guess if you love to travel, the book might interest you.
