In this gripping, high-octane sequel to The Line Between, which New York Times bestselling author Alex Kava calls “everything you want in a thriller,” cult escapee Wynter Roth and ex-soldier Chase Miller emerge from their bunker to find a country ravaged by disease. Six months after vanishing into an underground silo with sixty-one others, Wynter and Chase emerge to an altered world. There is no … to an altered world. There is no sign of Noah and the rest of the group that was supposed to greet them when they surfaced–the same people Wynter was counting on to help her locate the antibiotics her gravely ill friend, Julie, needs.
As the clock ticks down on Julie’s life, Wynter and Chase embark on a desperate search for medicine and answers. But what they find is not a nation on the cusp of recovery but one decimated by disease. What happened while they were underground?
With food and water in limited supply and their own survival in question, Chase and Wynter must venture further and further from the silo. They come face-to-face with a radically changed society, where communities scrabble to survive under rogue leaders and cities are war zones. As hope fades by the hour and Wynter learns the terrible truth of the last six months, she is called upon again to help save a nation she no longer recognizes–a place so chaotic she’s no longer sure it can even survive.
With Tosca Lee’s signature “beautifully written and deeply unnerving” (Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author) prose, A Single Light is a breathless thriller of nonstop suspense.

I finished most of this book in a day. A Single Light picks up right where The Line Between left off, with 63 people living in a silo together until it opens up to a better world. Only, things don’t go according to plan. It doesn’t slow down from the start. Tosca kept me guessing the whole time. And crying. And honestly, I had a hard time sleeping last night because I was still a little on edge.
Go grab this book fast, because it’s a good one.
To say this book is a superb follow-up to The Line Between is an understatement. The story of Wynter Roth continues in this fast-paced, taut thriller, where Wynter finds herself facing the world after six months locked away in an underground bunker. She and boyfriend, Chase Miller, must race against the clock to locate desperately needed medications in cities that have been ravaged by disease, and those that take advantage of the breakdown of society. Along the way, you will meet new characters, as well as revisit with characters from the first book.
The setup of the book works extremely well, leaving one desperate to read each chapter and find out what happens next. It’s an incredibly realistic and frighteningly possible type of scenario that will leave some readers wondering what they can do to better prepare themselves should something similar ever come to pass. Can we trust our food supply? How safe are we from foreign governments? Can we trust our own neighbors?
The two books in this series would make a great and suspenseful movie or TV series, but only with someone committed to staying true to the books. Each character and scenario is vitally important to the storyline. Tosca Lee was a new author to me prior to The Line Between, but she has secured her place as a favorite author for me and a master of suspense. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who loves thrillers and dystopian novels.
Now THAT’S how you do a sequel. “The Line Between” proved that Tosca Lee was a master of intrigue, character building, and story-telling. If the world she built of the Enclave and the cult, then the apocalyptic epidemic that runs rampant over the country, then I don’t even know what kind of stories you might enjoy. But with “A Single Light” she upped the ante.
Wynter is a fugitive, locked away from the disease, hiding for her life…. But even that doesn’t keep Wynter safe. Every turn of the page brings a new surprise, a new battle to be won, and Lee doesn’t shy away from difficult choices an author must make in this type of book.
This sequel proved that Tosca Lee is prolific at page-turning action, emotional depth and edge of the seat (or bed…depending on where you are reading) cliffhangers. I literally could not stop reading.
And don’t get me started on the creepy factor. The only time I was willing to put the book down was when the lights were out, all was still in my home, and the only thing making noise were the trees outside, the creaking of our home’s foundation, and the pounding of my heart as Wynter walked into yet another disturbing situation. One chapter pushed my imagination over its wild limits and I had to close the book before being so freaked out that I required a light!! But the next morning, I immediately picked the book back up until I finished! Too good to not recommend.
Thank you to the publisher for an advanced copy of this thrilling book. My opinions are my own.
WOW!!! This book had me at page one! It was edge of my seat suspense that kept me guessing what would happen next!!!
Intense. Tosca starts out by letting us in on the happenings inside the bunker. When Noah’s daily messages stop coming the people are left wondering what is going on outside the silo and what will the world be like when the door finally opens? Tosca captured my attention right away with the mystery and suspense. The added deadline of finding medicine for Julie before she died magnified the urgency and kept the pages flipping.
The finding of the medicine occupied most of the book which surprised me a little. I thought there would be more focus on the terrorism aspect and the drama of creating the vaccine. Its hard to know which would have been more exciting. However I recognize that in order to do that we would not have been able to keep the seamless singular POV through Wynter so it makes more sense as is.
I loved the chase and the action and that Tosca wasn’t afraid to kill off her characters. It illicits more emotion and engagement with the story and the outcome.
I liked seeing Wynter escaping the isolation of the Enclave just to enter into the isolation of the silo and how we got to see her character grow through her different captivities.
One thing I wished would have been handled differently was the answer to the security footage tape showing Noah and the others leaving the farm. We got the answer later but it was obscure and didn’t fit the tone of the tape. It was basically a side note instead of the ominous and important role it first appeared to have.
Also, a tiny annoyance was how a lot of the sentences started without a subject, i.e. statements starting with ‘can’ and ‘am’ etc. just felt disjointed reading those in my head, I almost always caught myself rereading them to see if I missed something.
All that to say, another great Tosca Lee book and was a satisfying sequel to The Line Between!
Bonus shoutout for Kearney and Runza and Des Moines!
** I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review **
This is an amazing/haunting/exciting/scary/fun look at what life could be like after a horrible disease ravages the US and makes everyone revert back to times they can’t remember, without lights/gas/food/light/etc.
This is an intriguing story that keeps you guessing and will have you wanting to read more and more. This is a great read and the series is amazing. If you haven’t read the first book start there it is called The Line Between.
Dive into the journey and enjoy.
5 Stars!
This book is 100% worth it. If you’re looking for a thriller that will:
-make you cry from beauty
-shock you with secret plots
-have you on the edge of your seat
-thinking about it for days to come after you’ve finished it
-wishing you were a part of the plot
This book is for you.
In a world full of post-apocalyptic nonsense stories, this book is a breath of fresh air.
Wynter and Chase emerge after six months from an underground silo. The area is abandoned. They must find an IV antibiotic for her friend Julie before she dies.
This is a journey into a world changed by a global pandemic. Cities become war zones. Rogue leaders spring up and survival isn’t a guarantee.
I really enjoyed this story. It felt dangerous, threatening, and suspenseful. One didn’t know where the next mile would lead or if they would survive. It was fast-paced and breathless at times. I couldn’t put the book down. It was that good. I’ll be affected by this thriller for a long time and hope nothing like this comes upon this earth.
Wynter takes greater risks and has become more determined. Chase tries to be her voice of reason. I say tries. Wynter’s drive to protect those she loves moves the story. It’s a powerful message.
Either by a stroke of luck, in which I don’t believe, or because of persistent begging, I happily received a galley of Tosca Lee’s newest novel.
A Single Light, the sequel to The Line Between, was a welcome addition to my reading list. I tried to pace myself but still devoured it in three days.
I admit I was excited to read it as I completely enjoyed the characters and plot development in The Line Between. Tosca is a great story teller.
I was not disappointed with the sequel in the least.
As much more a reader than a line editor I focus on the flow and connectivity of the story, scenes, and how they come to rest at the end of the tale.
If a story grabs me I cease seeing the punctuation. I fall in and swim with the current. A Single Light had some calm eddies and some Class 5 white water so you won’t get bored. Just try and hold your breath!
I again saw one of the reasons I enjoy Lee’s writing so much. As with her other solo works, there is a gravity about her writing that pulls readers in and along with it. A Single Light is no different.
There is an eloquence of purpose in Tosca Lee’s words.
Each scene, each bit of dialogue, each character interaction seems like it’s going somewhere. I don’t know how much this is due to her skill in the writing craft or if she simply has a knack for it. Words are not wasted.
The characters are solid with a sampling of just about every type of personality out there. Some old, some new, and some…well, it seems Tosca is not afraid to kill off some really good characters. But in an apocalypse good people gotta die right?
Once again Tosca Lee has written a super enjoyable, well thought out thriller. There is only one recurring issue I have with her books. They end.
I definitely encourage readers to get A Single Light, ASAP. Wynter is coming again!
Once again Tosca Lee kept me awake reading past my bedtime.
I liked how the sequel left off right where The Line Between ended. The story and tension built up until the ending was one action scene after another. Just when I thought I could catch my breath, another twisty turn was around the bend. I’m telling the truth when I admit I could not put the book down.
I enjoyed getting to know Wynter and Chase better and meeting new characters as well, especially one who uses sign language to communicate. There aren’t enough books available that describe visual forms of communication and A Single Light did a great job incorporating it in a natural way that fit the story.
Excellent follow up to the first book. Now, if you don’t mind, I need to catch up on some sleep.
4.5 Stars
I loved The Line Between, the first book in this series, and have been so anxious for the sequel. Something like what happens in this series could feasibly happen in real life. It’s not out of the realm of possibilities. It’s not far fetched, at all. So, at times, it made for a scary read, but it was, also, utterly compelling. An action packed, never ending thrill ride that I could not put down.
There were so many twists and turns and stunning revelations that I didn’t see coming. Some that left me gasping for breath and having to set my Kindle down for a minute to recover. Seriously, parts of this book gave me a near panic attack. Imagining that this could actually happen. Wondering what I would do in the same situation. How would I react? It was terrifying to think about, but absolutely entertaining to read.
A Single Light could probably be read and enjoyed without having read The Line Between first, but I’d still recommend going in order. There’s a lot of backstory I wouldn’t want you to miss out on. Not to mention all the excitement.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.
Tosca Lee never disappoints! This book is the perfect follow-up to The Line Between (if you haven’t read The Line Between, then read it first). The story takes off again and just doesn’t stop until the last page! I read this book in a few hours the first time through because I needed to know what happened. Then, I read it again to take in more details.
The strong protagonist is back and the world is a very different place, not at all what she expected. Read The Line Between and then read A Single Light, both by Tosca Lee. You’ll be hooked from the beginning.
We find our heroine Wynter and 63 other people locked in a silo as the world above comes apart. With communication cut off our band emerges after 6 months finding society broken, anarchy rules.
Will they survive will anyone survive.
A Single Light – the sequel to The Line Between – had me as riveted to the book as I was with the first one. I’m not normally one for a “thriller” kind of book, but Author Tosca Lee is changing my mind about that! Holy Mackerel! I’m not lying when I tell you I found myself holding my breath a couple of times wondering if Winter and Chase will make it. Will they pick up the disease? They’ve been underground since the world changed as they knew it. It’s been six months. When the doors finally unlock—if they actually unlock—what will they find left. Surely there will be no people.
But what about all the people saved up in the commune? Did they survive like they were promised they would be?
But reading through this book, it makes you wonder … could this happen to us?
Great book. I highly recommend it if you like to think through a possibility of something way out of the ordinary! The author does a fabulous job of describing the scenes that you feel like you’re there or have been.
Disclaimer: I received a Digital Advanced Reader Copy of this from the publisher through NetGalley with no expectation in return. The comments in my review are mine.
Tosca Lee the best selling author of “The Line Between” has done it again! I didn’t think “A Single Light book 2” could be as exciting and fast paced as the first book, but I was wrong. It’s an even more exciting and faster paced thriller! “A Single Light” starts six months afterwards the first book. Wynter and Chase are holding up in a underground silo. Once again Wynter has to save not only the world but a good friends life. The writing style, descriptions and storyline are fantastic. My hope is in the future there will be a “book 3”. Thank you once again Tosca Lee for this 5 Star thriller!
Tosca Lee nailed it with this follow up to The Line Between. It was a thrilling ride with so many twists, turns and emotions that it is hard to put down once you start to read it. Soooo good!!!
A Single Light is the second book in Tosca Lee’s The Line Between series.
Spoilers from book one ahead!
At the end of book one Wynter and Chase are locked into an underground silo with a group of other healthy people. Toward the end of their 6-month “imprisonment” tensions begin to run high. And then the door opens. Early. They all know something isn’t right. Where’s Noah? Where’s anyone?
Circumstances force Wynter and Chase to leave the silo and face an uncertain and definitely unexpected world.
For more sensitive readers, there is some violence and a few swear words.
Fans of Tosca Lee will get sucked into this book.
Phenomenal… i’ve been eagerly awaiting the sequel to the line between Tosca Lee. I absolutely loved this apocalyptic thriller. When cult escapee Wynter Roth and ex-Marine Chase Miller emerge from their bunker months after the country is overtaken by a killer disease, they find themselves on the run. They are desperately searching for antibiotics that are in short supply as well as food, fuel, and help. As more lies are uncovered, and truths come out before they even leave the bunker, the question is can they survive and work together for the greater good?
I loved the real life desperation I believe you would see if this story became a reality. The desperation. The loss of hope. The lawlessness. Then…the reemergence if the good. The hope slowly being restored. I’m in love with this book, but hope we don’t see this become reality. Yes, it feels that real!
If you love apocalyptic thriller’s with a dash of romance and strong male and female lead characters, you will love The Line Between and the second book, A Single Light! I’m desperately hopeful they will make a movie that lives up to the book.
I was given an advanced reader copy through NetGalley by the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Bravo, Tosca Lee! Just when I was thinking the sequel of The Line Between couldn’t possibly live up to my high expectations, she proved me wrong, knocking it out of the park with A Single Light! The story was a nonstop emotional thrill ride that kept me up at night with no regrets, as I couldn’t stand to put it down. Tosca is a master at character development and dialogue as she proves once again in this story of loyalty, bravery, and love in unfathomably challenging circumstances. I heartily recommend this riveting book to anyone who enjoys thrillers or dystopian stories. Thank you, NetGalley, for the opportunity to read an advance copy.
A Single Light is the perfect sequel to The Line Between, and picks up right where the first book left off…Wynter, Chase, and group are in the silo, waiting for the day it is set to open. When that day arrives, there is no sign of Noah or the others they expect to see.
Once again, Tosca Lee does not disappoint! She has a way of drawing you into the story, making it seem as if you are right there. I read this book in one night, I could not put it down! Totally worth it! Many twists and turns, love, fear, sadness, and excitement. I highly recommend this sequel!
