A Maine Literary Awards Finalist, A Good Man with a Dog follows a game warden’s adventures from the woods of Maine to the swamps of New Orleans. Follow along as he and his canine companions investigate murder, search for missing persons, and rescue survivors from natural disasters. This is a memoir that reads like a true crime novel. Roger Guay takes readers into the patient, watchful world of a … patient, watchful world of a warden catching poachers and protecting pristine wilderness, and the sometimes CSI-like reconstruction of deer- and moose-poaching scenes. When Guay’s father died in a tragic fishing accident, a kind game warden helped him through the loss. Inspired by this experience, as well as his love of the outdoors, he became a game warden.
Guay searches for lost hunters and hikers. He estimates that over the years, he has pulled more than two hundred bodies out of Maine’s north woods! His frequent companion is a little brown Labrador retriever named Reba, who can find discarded weapons, ejected shells, hidden fish, and missing people.
A Good Man with a Dog explores Guay’s life as he and his canine partners are exposed to terrible events, from tracking down hostile poachers to searching for victims of violent crimes, including a year-long search for the hidden graves of two babies buried by a Massachusetts cult. He witnessed firsthand FEMA’s mismanagement of the post-Katrina cleanup efforts in New Orleans, an experience that left him scarred and disheartened. But he found hope with the support of family and friends, and eventually returned to the woods he knew and loved from the days of his youth.

I loved this book! I have told and retold the stories I read in this book. They are so exciting!
Great stories from the Maine game warden. Average writing
Memoir of a Maine Game Warden, so many features made this a worthwhile read. For someone in love with all things Maine, and also a growing appreciation for those who serve to protect the wildlife and the people of our state, this was a fantastic read. A true hero in so many facets of his job, this author paid a huge price for his service yet keeps giving back to the people of Maine and to others in need. Anyone who loves the wild outdoors should read this book!
Good story but it drags at times.
Poorly written but I loved his story! I knew many game wardens growing up and recognized many of his characteristics.
Too boring to finish
Enjoyed learning about what Wardens do.
Learned a lot about the profession, but not well written. Storyline was disjointed and I wasn’t able to follow at times. In a few of the incidents, Guay left readers hanging and I would have liked to read the eventual outcomes.
Learned a lot about this organization.
Great stories!
I love Maine, started visiting there in early 1990’s. I enjoy reading about that part of the country
I thought it was a great book about game wardens and all the work they do and why. I think every hunter or fisherman or woman should read this book. It’s a good insight into why they try to preserve the wilderness of Maine for all of us. Very well written.
Really enjoyed this book.
Loved this book. I have a whole new appreciation for Park Rangers!
This seems like a realistic portrayal of the life of a game warden in the North Wood. It’s well written, funny in places and entertaining and also very informative.
This is a good read. I learned about the effect dogs have in problem solving.
