Frances Arnsby has always loved to read and she was determined to get her manuscript published. She travels to Rapid City to visit with Constance, a girl her age she has been corresponding with, to stay for three weeks. First Constance ends up being nothing like her letters and is so self absorbed. Then Frances marches right into the local newspaper and ends up at the desk of reporter Clive Davidson. He reads her story and tells her she needs to experience life more to make the characters more believable. He agrees to help her and the adventure begins!
Meghan Kelly is an amazing narrator. She brings just the right amount of emotion and different voices for the characters to make them come alive. Combined with Kari’s wonderful writing, it makes for a book I never wanted to end! Loved it!!
Frances and Clive meet when she brings her book to his place of work so that it can be published.
Their relationship becomes one of mentor and pupil as he feels that she lacks the real life experience of romance and love in her writings.
Their feelings grow for each other but neither will admit to this and things get more and more complicated until the climax of the story.
Frances is a sweet and innocent young lady. Clive thinks he is making the right decisions for her to gain experience in life but soon realizes that he has made a big mistake.
Of course there is also one of Frances’ friends who doesn’t have to do much to make her feel jealous about her relationship with Clive and the Englishman who is supposed to take her out, but enough said about him!
The story is well written and moves along quite quickly but I felt a bit of disappointment when it did end as I would have loved for it to carry on and on. Such was my total involvement in the lives of these two characters.
Of course, Meghan Kelly has once again done a phenomenal narration that uplifts the story even more.
I just loved all of it and will happily recommend it to you.
Having listened to the audiobook version, my unbiased and voluntary review is recorded above.
Romance in Rapid is a charming romance in the Seven Brides of South Dakota series by Kari Trumbo. Although fourth in the series, it is easily a stand-alone story. I have enjoyed several other books by this author and was looking forward to reading this book and was not disappointed. The story moves quickly with a few twists and turns to the plot that helped to keep my interest. Frances is a naive young woman who has written a dime romance novel. Yet she has never experienced real romance. During a visit with her ‘pen pal’, Constance, a rather self-centered and spoiled hostess, Frances asks Clive, a newspaper reporter, to help her get the book published. He recognizes that the book needs a lot of work and that the author perhaps needs to experience true love. He sets her up with a visiting Englishman. And the adventures, or perhaps misadventures, begin. The author has captured well the era of the setting and the emotions and actions of her characters. They are realistic and relatable and I was drawn quickly into their story and enjoyed watching the romance develop between Clive and Frances. Readers of historical romance books will not want to miss this one. I listened to a complimentary copy of the audio version of the book and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own. Meghan Kelly does a great job narrating Clive and Frances’s story, which made the listening experience enjoyable.
Romance in Rapid
Seven Brides of South Dakota, Book 4
By: Author Kari Trumbo
Narrated by: Meghan Kelly – Audiobook Narrator
This series keeps getting better and better. Frances is a writer trying to get a romance novel published. When she brings it to Clive, a newspaper man for review, he pleasantly tells her that her writing is not true to life. With no personal romantic experience, she has nothing to bring to the table. Clive sets her up in a situation to experience what men really enjoy while dating, but both end up with unexpected encounters and feelings. This was a very fun story, Kari Trumbo eloquently infuses a romance story while Frances learns about writing a romance. Dime novels having their own reputation, it was fun to see how men and women have their own thoughts and expectations, and then have them put into a book. I love how both Frances and Clive learn and grow through the process, and the cast of supporting characters is awesome. I really enjoyed Clive’s mom, a source of wisdom to all.
Meghan Kelly immerses herself into this book, and gives a wonderful performance. I love her voice for historical romance. The richness in her tones and inflections in her voice lead the characters and make them seem real. I was completely entertained and can’t wait for their next collaboration!

Romance In Rapid by Kari Trumbo
Francis has worked diligently at completing her novel. She is sure that it is wonderful and that everyone is going to want to read it. She refuses to let anyone else read it until she is able to get to Rapid City and work at finding a publisher.
She winds up at the newspaper in a meeting with Clive, the head reporter. He reads her book and calls it drivel. He tells her that she has no idea what romance really is and that she needs experience. Unfortunately the “experience” that he sets her up for is with an English gentleman who is in town. Let’s just say that he is no gentleman.
This was the first full length novel that I have read by the author, and I was captivated. This will definitely not be the last. This is book four in her Seven Brides of South Dakota Series.
I was given a copy of this audiobook with no requirement of review. This review is voluntary and my true opinion.
I loved this book, it’s the first one of this series that I’ve read, so now I have to go back and start from the beginning!! This was such a unique book! With all the books available in this genre, it’s a wonderful breath of fresh air to find a storyline so different from the norm!! I especially loved the touch of faith and prayer!!
