I hope the crap that committed this crime were put away for life. Doing this backwards, movie then book, but there isn’t a place to rate movies, so am placing this here in the hope that others will pick up the book just to read the tragic yet miraculous story of this brilliant artist! Just saw the movie “Welcome to Marwen” (brilliantly acted by Steve Carell) and will be picking up this book! The movie was amazing as only Steve Carell can bring to life!
Very short. Was somewhat disappointed. Hard to see pictures with text on Kindle.
There was not much to this book. Mostly pictures of the subjects creations. Very think story. I skimmed most of it.
Original premise, many pictures not easily seen on Kindle.
The true story behind the movie. Inspired me to watch the documentary which compliments the book.
I thought it would be an actual book. It’s really more of an extended magazine article. I was unfamiliar with the story but had seen the ads for the film so was curious. This answered my curiosity but wasn’t really what I would term a ‘book’. Still it is interesting reading and a pretty amazing story. I’m glad I purchased it through BookBub and not at full price.
I found this book inspiring, interesting, and incredibly sad!
The results of a human tragedy, reframed as art. The art has a sadistic, masochistic l character that is very disconcerting. The author might do well to think about turning his considerable talents to projects that would help him connect to other people and reality.
interesting story, not a great book.
I appreciate Marwencol’s truthful account of Mark’s story. It was a terrible event and is interesting to see Mark’s recovery process, but not oversensationalized. I have not yet seen the movie, but I can only imagine how much additional fluff Hollywood may try to add. This book will give you the story, period. It is not turned into an inspirational, feel-good story if that is what you’re looking for. Full of Mark’s photos, it is a quick read, and it will leave you impressed with the skill, creativity, and patience Mark displays in perfecting his craft.
The book is short on story and is saved by the wonderful photos of Marwencol.
Saw the original documentary on Marwencol so this was an interesting companion book.
This is a rare instance where I think the movie will be more interesting.
The ads for the movie made me curious about Mark Hogancamp’s story so when I saw this book, I had to read it. I am so glad I did! Mark’s background story is inspiring and the images and stories of Marwencol are fascinating.
I wanted to read the real story before seeing the movie, told in Mark’s own words. Very brief book with loads of photos of the doll town of Marwencol. Quite fascinating. He was lucky to have been so artistic to begin with so that he could create his own art therapy.
I really enjoyed the book. The photos and stories we’re great. Mark Hogancamp is a very talented artist and inspirational. I would recommend seeing the documentary about Marwencol.
