After saving her brother, Hansel, when they were young, from the evil Lucretia Thunderbane, Gretel never thought she would one day have to return to the dreaded wood, Bialowieza Forest. Oma Leiderhosen warned Awodiya to stay out of the woods behind their quaint German house in Stuttgart, Germany. But like most children, she did the opposite of what she was told. Awodiya knew she shouldn’t have … shouldn’t have followed that kid into the forest but she never knew her Opa’s tales were true. Oh how she wished she had listened to her grandmother now. Trapped inside the house of Die Hexe in the center of the forest, Awodiya learns a part of the tale that was never included in Opa’s stories. Was it true? Would her mother come to rescue her?

Great retelling of Hansel and Gretel.
31/2 out of 5 stars
Hansel and Gretel have all grown up and living in America . Gretel and her daughter Awodiya have moved for a new job after loosing her husband . When she gets a call from her brother saying their father had a major accident and is in the hospital in Florida. Then they are heading to their homeland Germany to bury him . When old tales come true and we find out about the witch in the forest and her gingerbread house . Awodiya found out that story is real the hard way . Will Gretel be able to rescue her daughter .
This is a retelling of Hansel and Gretel and its pretty good . The characters are well written and complex . Awodiya has moments where she comes off as a little bit on the bossy side and she thinks she knows everything . Usually she is a sweet girl going through so much at the moment. Gretel I think is suffering a bit of ptsd . She really goes through a lot through out the book. The other characters in the book are all well written and complex .
This is a fairy tail that is updated for today , the author did a pretty good job with the story and using Gretel and Hansel as adults . The author also adds a bit of religion to the mix . I really liked the story but I just felt that there was some things that were started and really not finished through out the book . The story also just had an abrupt ending, I felt like there really wasn’t a completion to the story. Don’t get me wrong I liked the story and the author’s way of writing . She can spin a great story , so if you want a good retelling of a fairy tale . Check it out and add it to your summer reading list.
Not a huge fan of fairytale retellings. Reason being they are all pretty much the same. You can only tell it just so many times until they all run together. Difference with this one is there is a religious twist to it. So, I thought that was interesting and definitely different! She did an awesome job with the cover because its not what I expected. So, when you figure out that its got a religious twist on it your pretty surprised. I’m not against it or anything just not my normal genre. I read some Christian stories because my Mom was a huge fan and I feel closer to her when I read them since she passed away. So, a pleasant surprise. I liked it!
Hansel and Gretel have grown up. They end up back in Germany after a family tragedy. Their mother warns Gretel’s daughter to stay away from the woods. Something evil lives there. Awodiya doesn’t listen and goes in. She learns that there’s more to the story than what she was told.
A magical retelling of Hansel and Gretel. Unfortunately the story was stilled and awkward for me. It made it difficult to get through and really form a connection to the characters.
I was confused when the date on the starting page was 1993 as the story this was based on was originally written in the 1800’s but realized to update it , it would be a modern version of it. I understand that this is a Novella and not a Novel so it is a shorter read, but more background would have been appreciated. Plus it seemed like there was to much unnecessary information was provided, such as the difference between jellyfish. But after that I enjoyed the updating of the fairy tale. Learning that Gretel taking the spell book did give insight whey the witch was so intent on getting back at Gretel. I liked when Awodiya tried to talk to the witch about changing her ways. Now I’m curious about the changes in Awodiya eyes. It was a good attempt the updating of a fairy tale, I just feel it could have been told differently.
This seems like more of a sequel, than a retelling, and I loved it. Hansel and Gretel grew up and live in America. They return to Germany. Gretel’s daughter tangles with the which this time. Even though I was left with some questions about Phoebe and her possession of a certain book, I thoroughly enjoyed this story.
“This book was a huge surprise nothing what I expected. I was hoping for a bit of romance but no it wasn’t like that. With multiple POVs the author took us into a journey of adventure, surprises, magic and *cough cough* a pet dragon. Like I said from multiple POV we got to enjoy different sides and aspect of the story until that ultimately ‘battle’ but I must admit that seeing Hansel and Gretel grown up as parents was different in a good way. Well, my last touch with this story was the movie where the fought evil bitches… anyway, it wasn’t my usual read yet the experience was refreshing. I highly recommend it.”
First of all: Oh, what an awesome cover! It caught my eye as soon as I saw it. The idea for the story is great and being Christian and clean I was dying to read it and see how it will mix with magic and fantasy. But the book needs some serious editing, and being Spanish my native language, the parts in Spanish made me cringe. It is also a little confusing because it jumps from scenes and POV all time. If the inconsistencies and issues are handled, this is going to make a great book!!!
I really fell for the cover and the blurb of this book and was so enamored with it but then, I went inside the book. I struggled with the focus of which character was the focus and who was not. A few spots where the German language was spoken and there was no English translation. I don’t read or speak German. Thankfully my husband does. There were places in the story where the things just did not mesh well. I wish I could say that this was a great story but it just wasn’t for me.
Wonderful story. Action and adventure. Definitely looking forward to a sequel
Awŏdíya, is the daughter of a grown Gretel who is now a doctor. Hansel still lives with his mom and dad after Gretel rescued him from the witch when they were teens. Gretel and her daughter are called home when Gretel’s father passes. They decide to honor his wishes to bury him in Germany. While there, the witch has spied them in the house. Gretel took something that belonged to the witch…so now the witch will take something from her in return. Only, that gift is more precious than anyone knows. This book has Christian principles thrown in for a retelling of Hansel and Gretel…and more.
