I wanted to read this title when I discovered book two of the series. It’s always better to start at the beginning, but I plan to read the two books in succession.
Dystopia is a genre that I love a lot even though I read little of it in the end. I particularly enjoyed the mix with “mutants” being a fan of the X-Mens.
The world in which the story takes place will take Hollis in search of truth. She is skeptical because she is divided between two versions of history, the one she was taught from a young age and the one she discovered through a group of Diseased Ones.
I can easily identify with Hollis even though the ending has proven to me that she is still very naive and easily influenced. I admit that I dropped an “idiot” just before the last page.
The cliffhanger – yes, I said cliffhanger because there is one – makes you want to know the rest. That I will start as soon as my review is finished.
Danielle Harrington’s pen is fluid because I was easily drawn into the story. It is a successful first book.
I received a free copy of the book via Xpresso Book Tours and am volontary leaving a review.
Excellent effort by a young debut author!
In a world devoid of all human emotion or the right for self-expression, Hollis Timewire longs for something intangible that she doesn’t even know she’s missing. Harrington does an excellent job of making the reader exasperated and frustrated with Hollis for stubbornly clinging to the only way of life she’s ever known. The truth is right in front of her—yet she fails to see it, over and over again.
But there’s still hope. Every now and then she falters, she doubts herself. Glimpses of the truth get through to her—and she FEELS. Will Hollis get a clue before it’s too late? I highly recommend The Diseased Ones by this up and coming young author and can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Danielle Harrington is one to watch!
I have received a copy of this book with Netgally. I really wasn’t dissapointed to read this.

Being told all her life that emotion are evil and that the diseased ones are monsters that have cause a great massacre hundreds of years ago, she gonna be oblige to hide underground.
This group telling her that the governement is lying. They are the ones responsible for the massacre of people who have abilities. Hollis doesn’t know who to belived and she doesn’t trust the Diseased one at first. She’s gonna train to learn to control her power, trying to figure out the truth and she’s willing to risk everything to go back home. But who can she really trust…
I really have loved this dystopian novel and looking foward to read the sequel with the cliffhanger in the end.
This was one heck of a story. It was original, thought provoking, and engrossing. I devoured this entire story in about two hours, and then read part of it to my hubby, which then lead to several days worth of conversations. I love how this pulls you in for quite a story, then leaves you thinking about it for days afterwards. It perfectly mirrors what is happening today, lol minus the incredible powers. I loved it, thank you for the opportunity to review this gem!
This was a great dystopian read with some X-Men vibes. I really admire how the author was able to keep me connected with the main character, Hollis. I feel just as confused as she does about the truth, and I am truly excited to see where this story goes.
4 Cranky Stars
On the day of Hollis Timewire’s 16th birthday, she discovers that she is a Diseased One. “I am a Diseased One, and that’s a death sentence.” Hollis is suddenly flooded with an unbelievable power, able to stop and possibly kill anyone in her path. All of her life, she has lived as a member of the Society, without showing emotions. “The path to a perfect society is perfect obedience.”
She finds herself transported against her will to an underground compound full of other Diseased Ones. This group tries to convince Hollis that the government falsified history to cover up the massacre of people with special abilities. Having lived her entire life being told that the biomarker that gives people special powers is dangerous and that the Diseased Ones are responsible for the deaths of thousands, how can she believe what they are telling her?
As Hollis gets to know the young people in the compound, she begins to feel emotions for the first time. “Keeping people neutral guarantees equality and peace. War, conflict, and strife have been eradicated because expressing yourself isn’t allowed.” She decides to learn to control her powers and discover as much as possible about the group while trying to deal with her new found friendships and the beginning of young love. Her mentors try to convince her that her life in the compound should be enough. “Find joy in the ability that makes you who you are, because with these people, that’s what true life is about.”
When she nearly kills one of the group because of her brain-altering power, she decides that she must return home to learn if there is truly a secret weapon that would remove her power and allow her to become a citizen of the world she has always known. Surely, a life without emotion and without her dangerous power must be the path she is meant to follow.
I love reading YA dystopian fiction and I am always in search of the next great story. This first book in the series ends on a definite cliffhanger, so don’t expect it to be wrapped up in a pretty package. The author does a great job of world-building and character development and I could really feel the emotions that Hollis experiences as her world is torn apart. I look forward to reading the rest of this series to learn the truth of Hollis’ world in the year 2647!
