Book five in the Ice Age Shifters series a well written Paranormal story that held my interest until the end. I want to read the other books in this series. This is sheriff’s deputy and leopard shifter Chantal Hammond and Prehistoric sloth shifter Dauro de Mar’s story. There is suspense, drama, danger, other super naturals, twists, turns, another world, evil, and romance. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A powerful fairy had created a demesne, to house her priced collection of rare shifters, all forced to stay in their animal form, some for hundreds of years. Finally the fairy dies. But now the shifters fear something new. The magic starts to fail and when the fairy’s heirs apparent come, they want to sell the shifters off. Unaware of them on Earth, shifters try to help an island after a hurricane. One of the volunteers, Chantal meets Dauro, an ancient marine sloth and together they fight hunters, the heirs and the others to bring safety to the shifters of the demesne and discover how much they mean to each other.
A very original story with interesting characters and plenty of action to keep the reader on their toes.

I was expecting the usual shifter love story when I downloaded this book. It is a love story, but it is even better than that! It is more focused on events and shifters versus the usual graphic sex scenes making up over half the book. This book does have a sex scene but it is more believable because it is handled more like real life and is at the end of the story. There is a hurricane and evil fairies as well as mythological shifters. This is one of the BEST shifter stories I have ever read. I LOVED IT. I highly recommend this story.

Chantal was a cop and a black leopard on loan to New Orleans part of their program. Then the flamingo shifters asked her to go to a small island Vieques part of Puerto Rico to help with the clean up after a hurricane went through. But then she found two Capricorn shifters trying to escape from where they were held prisoners but the stone statues caught and took them back. A stone fairy had collected different shifters but made it that couldn’t shift to their human form. Then she died and the place was falling apart, when the stone statues went back Chantal went in the portal too. The fairy’s family was going to sell the shifters so they with help they escaped all but Sunscar he was trying to keep them from being recaptured. The demeson was falling apart another fairy went in to save it but someone had to stay there and keep the castle and statues from going after everyone and bring them back. Finally after some problems were solved Chantal and the prehistoric sloth shifter were mates. So a happy ending!
I lost something in this book. This is one of those books for me that I needed to read from the first one to the current one. I understand it’s a standalone book but some of the cameos from the other books are in it and I couldn’t really follow sometimes what was going on. Besides that, you have a world that is falling apart because the magic is wearing out and fading fast. But in the mist of this, there is a relationship that is definitely growing. Chantal’s and Dauro’s magic and experience are the key to fend of the villains of all walks of magic. With the way the ecosystem warp speeding the danger something’s gotta give before it’s destroyed.

As with the other books I’ve read in this series, Shifter’s Storm puts the reader right into the action. Shifters and magical creatures are imprisoned in a fantasy land that is falling apart. Its fairy creator is dead, and the inhabitants have to find a way out while they can. But since there are still traps and magic in place to keep them confined, it’s not going to be easy to escape. But two of them manage to make it out and that’s where leopard shifter, Chantal gets caught up in the action.
The shifters each have their own story and they’ve been, in some cases, trapped there for decades, if not centuries. Forced to remain in their non-human forms against their will. What continues to draw me in about this series is how the shifter world has layers of history, rules, hierarchies and magic. It’s a very rich world that continues to be revealed as we meet various characters. Dauro, for instance is an ice age shifter sloth and I was eager to see how he would connect with Chantal. But they not only worked well together, but formed a bond that may have seemed improbable at first glance.
I felt a deep investment in the fate of the imprisoned shifters, and their fight for their freedom kept me turning the pages. Without a doubt, I’ve enjoyed every book in this series so far, and they just keep getting better and better.
Shifter’s Storm is the latest in the Ice Age Shifters series and follows leopard shifter Chantal Hammond as she visits an island in Puerto Rico to help after a massive hurricane. She discovers a fairy demesne that is failing after the death of the evil fairy that created it. The demesne contains shifters that were captured and kept as prisoners. Chantal and the other shifters, including ice age aquatic sloth Dauro de Mar, must work together to escape and prevent the failure, since it will mean catastrophe to the island. Chantal and Dauro realize they have a connection, but they have so much going on, they have to try to ignore the attraction until they can get through the danger. I’ve enjoyed this series and this was another great story, featuring an interesting couple. Even though there are references to the other books, this one can easily be read as a stand alone, but I recommend reading the rest of the series, because they’re all great.
I really like Carol Van Natta’s Ice Age Shifter series so far and as soon as this one released I bought my copy and started reading it not much later. It was so fun to return to the world of the Ice Age Shifters, this book features Chantal, who is the daughter of the couple from book 1. I liked that connection with book 1 and she also has popped up shortly as a side character in another book, so it was fun to see her have her own story now. Her love interest is an ice age sloth shifter who has been held captive for hundreds of years. They meet under unusual circumstances and sparks fly.
While Chantal has made a short appearance in earlier books, this one an be read as a standalone easy enough if you like to start here. Especially as this story has no close ties to the previous books and takes place in a different setting. Although some of the earlier books do need to be read in order for the most enjoyment. And I do recommend checking out the rest of the series as it’s a great paranormal romance series.
Chantal is working in Florida for the sheriff’s office when some flamingo shifters ask for her help with hurricane cleanup on an island, she agrees to go and while there stumbles upon two Capricorns who need her help, she gets pulled back in to the fairy demesne they came from and vows to help all the shifters who are being held captive there to escape. Sloth shifter Dauro is one of the captives in the fairy mini world and he wants to escape with his fellow shifters and friends and this might be the moment they are waiting for, with the help of Chantal they might have a chance to make it out alive.
This was another great story. The pacing was well done and I was hooked from the start reading about these two characters, trying to help everyone escape from the fairy world and along the way find each other and fall in love. There’s plenty of danger and action. The whole escape plot line was great to read about and all the trouble surrounding this mini fairyland was quite interesting.
Both Chantal and Dauro were great characters. I liked Chantal’s personality, she was capable and self reliant and also willing to risk her own life to help these strangers escape. Dauro has been held captive for a long time, but that hasn’t made him bitter, he is the most caring and open person and he’s made friends and close ties to the other captive shifters. And these two characters worked together so well too.
While the romance developed quite quickly, I did feel their romance. It’s clear these two are great together and I like how they work together to help everyone escape. It also was nice to see how they only stole some kisses until everyone was safe before they brought things further. I thought they were sweet together and their attraction to one another was obvious too.
I liked seeing Dauro get his first glimpse of the real world after hundreds of year being captive and the first time in human form after so long in sloth form. While a magic spell gave him some knowledge about modern things it was interesting to see him get a feel for how the world has changed and use the wrong word a few times, like mini trident for fork.
I like how we get to know a bit more about these fairy world or fairy demesne as they are called in this book. They are small worlds anchored in the real world and you need a portal to get inside. The world inside is separate from the real world and can have it’s own rules. In this book the demesne was more of a prison, but I like the hopeful notes at the end of what the demesne can become. I also liked how Dauro was an ice age sloth, that was fun to read about. And I also liked the addition of flamingo shifters and some of the unusual shifters that were being held captive, like the wraith, wyvern and more. There also is plenty of unique magic again. I really like the world the author has created in this series.
To summarize: Another great read in this series. Chantal is the daughter of the couple from book one which was a fun connection, but this book can be read as a standalone. I liked both main characters. Chantal was capable, self reliant, friendly and helpful too as evidenced by how she risks her life to help free a group of strangers from their fairyland prison. Dauro has a big heart and I liked how much he cared about his friends. Their romance was great to see, they meet under unusual circumstances, but it sure works and I liked seeing them fall for each other. They are so sweet together and there is some steam too, but only once they’re safe. I liked seeing more of the world of the ice age shifters, I liked the idea of an ice age sloth shifter and the flamingo shifters were fun to read about too as well as some other interesting paranormal creatures and shifters. It also was interesting leaning more about these fairy demesnes. This continues to be a great series and I can’t wait for more books in this series!
The author has a talent for describing characters who are both realistic and utterly fantastic in wholly relatable ways. She also creates some truly different kinds of shifters. A prehistoric sloth warrior finally escaping after hundreds of years in captivity running into his modern leopard feminist mate during the escape – what a mixup of”The Great Escape” and “Gladiator” and “Leopold and Kate”. I enjoyed this. More, please!
I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
It is good to see what happened to Chantal, the baby in book one. Her character has been well developed by this author and her positive outlook and care for others shows in this great storyline. Dauro is an impressive character who has been held in captivity by a rock fairy for 400 years. How he kept is sanity during this time is revealed to us as the book progresses. This wonderful storyline, has many elements which keeps your interest from page one. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next one in the series.
