Combining intriguing stories from his remarkable work as an orthopedic surgeon working in leprosy colonies with vivid descriptions of how our intricate bodies work seamlessly, Dr. Brand and his co-writer Philip Yancey weave spiritual lessons for us as individuals and for the church. The authors make science highly readable, and the reading brings a sense of wonder at the precise work of the Creator in making man, and at God’s plan for the church to be God to the world around us. With great stories, amazing views of what makes us human physically and philosophically, and a call to be what God made us to be, Fearfully and Wonderfully is a masterpiece not to be missed.
What an amazing, enthralling book!! Anyone interested in medicine and/or the Christian faith will find much to appreciate and think about within these pages.
Paul Brand, MD trained as an orthopedic surgeon yet spent most of his life treating those with leprosy in India. Despite international awards and recognition, he remained a man of humility. In this book Brand reflects, through the lenses of his vast scientific knowledge and as a man of faith, on the medical, natural and spiritual realms and shows how they are intimately intertwined.
Brand shares his scientific knowledge of the wondrously intricate human body, a body so perfect that it did not just “happen” into being, but which was created by a creator God in His image as described in the Bible. Taking each part/system of the body in turn, he tells how magnificent it is and the purpose it serves to the body as a whole. He then relates this to the body of the Christian church.
His appreciation for the wonders of the body, of life itself, and how his faith blends the two leads to a wonderfully informative and uplifting read. I found it mesmerizing and highly recommend it.
Many thanks to NetGalley and InterVarsity Press for allowing me to read a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
I’m not a science person. When I went to college, I started as a Pre-Med Athletic Training Major. Then I took Biology my Freshman year. Before completing my first semester of college, I change to music education.
I enjoyed the opportunity to read Dr. Paul Brand and Philip Yancey’s updated and combined edition of two bestselling books. However, I will admit that I was worried that I would get lost within the technical, medical jargon, but that didn’t happen at all.
Dr. Brand and Yancey’s book opened a new way to look at the human body. How it is perfectly balanced and how we, as the body of Christ, can have that balance if we function as God intended.
I think Dr. Brand and Yancey said it best when they write, “We are not called to display individual strength as a discrete unit in the Body. Rather, our activity must be for the sake of the whole Body.”
I highly recommend this book, and I’m looking forward to using this book in the fall for a couple of group studies I’ll be leading.
This beautiful edition combines two previously published award-winning volumes, in one fully updated and vitally relevant book. It is a brilliant study of unity and diversity, within the living body and the community. I highly recommend “Fearfully and Wonderfully” for book clubs, small group studies, and personal edification. #fearfullyandwonderfully
Some of the most beautiful, informative and helpful observations about the Church as Christ’s body based on the human body and it’s role in Christian community. An all-time favorite book.
