Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment.
Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him … don’t nag at him too much.
At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.
Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends.
Or the end of everything…

A mysterious, creepy, audacious thriller.
I’ve always been a big fan of Peter Clines. When I was writing for Permuted Press, he was still with them and introduced me to his amazing Ex-Heroes series about superheroes trying to protect the world’s remaining humans from the zombie apocalypse. So, when I heard he was doing another horror novel, I was eager to pick it up. 14 is a fantastic …
Great read
I am waiting for Something. To happen. It’s been building up the peeps who live in this building are finding very strange things. I cannot wait to find out what is causing these strange things
This book kept me reading juat to see what happens next! I couldn’t put it down with something ALWAYS going down. Quick, good read.
I just re-read this book after reading Clines’ The Fold. I didn’t realize that they shared the same DNA and that The Fold was sort of a sequel. Some characters and ideas from 14 are subtly referenced in The Fold.
’14’ is written by Peter Clines, author of ‘The Fold’, ‘X-Files: Trust No One’ and ‘Dead Moon’.
“The apartment seemed the perfect option for Nate Tucker. It was an unremarkable brownstone block not too far from downtown LA. Most importantly, it was cheap. Remarkably cheap. Unrealistically cheap. However, being broke, Nate wasn’t about to ask …
Another great read for the Spooky season! 14 is intriguing, hilarious, and insanely unpredictable. Just when you think you have it figured out, it takes a hard left, then a right, then another left.
I listened to this book on audible and I am now a loyal Peter Cline fan. I love that his elements of the paranormal and science fiction are part of the book, but they never overshadow the characters. I need to find more authors like this.
My favorite book of 2019
Peter Clines has a way of making you love his characters. And then killing them off in amazing ways–or making them live on in a world forever changed by his metaphysics. Always character driven, but with plenty of action and adventure, 14 has beckoned me back into its world multiple times now.
Highly recommended
Wow, I loved this book. It was just what I’d hoped it would be and that doesn’t happen often.
The Kavach Building is an apartment building in Los Angeles. It’s been around since the late 1800s and is on the National Historic Landmark listing.
Nate Tucker works at a dead-end job that he hates and makes fiddly squat doing it, …
4.5 out of 5 stars
The first half of this book was amazing. It was immediately engaging, genuinely enjoyable and the pop culture references were fun to discover. Granted, this is exactly the kind of novel I love, having grown up on Stephen King’s quirky, beastly novels.
The only problem I have with this type of book is the same I have with most …
Peter Clines is a great, inventive writer and this book is full of creative twists and turns and genre-bending intruigue. Such a fun book to read and an even better one to listen to on audio.
I was introduced to the dark world of Peter Clines by a friend and was hooked from the moment Nate Tucker moved in to the mysterious, mystical, and vaguely malevolent Kavach building. My favorite types of horror and urban fantasy stories are those that feature the strange and inexplicable hiding in plain sight, where the fiction verse is just a …
I’m not a huge sci-fi fan but this recommendation from my daughter was spot on. It was a change from my normal reading of action mysteries and thrillers and I found myself carrying my Kindle with me looking for opportunities to read it.
I love the banter between characters in this book (And all of Peter clines books that I have read thus far). Very interesting and entertaining story!
I thought about how to rate this novel, and finally realized I was still thinking about it days later, even though I was already well into another book. It is refreshingly original, not like any other book I’ve read, and was never boring even though it started a bit slowly. The characters were well rounded and felt very real to me as regular …
This was the first Peter Cline’s book I read, and I loved it. The story is like a puzzle that you solve as you read the book.
What started out as a fun and innocent adventure quickly became a page-turner. I definitely recommend.
