Zero Repeat Forever is a dystopian novel with a sci-fi twist. While I do enjoy dystopian novels, sci-fi is way outside of my comfort zone. Given this, I did struggle somewhat in the middle of this book, especially during the action scenes (action scenes in movies put me to sleep – I know I’m weird in this way).
Given that, once I got about 2/3 of the way through the book, I could not put it down. I had to know what was going to happen to Raven and Eighth and where their journey would take them. I was so invested in them and their stories.
This book had strong Beauty and The Beast vibes which I loved. And that ending – wowza! I will definitely be reading book 2 in this series because I must know what happens next.
Wow! I have to thank BookTok for introducing me to this book, and even a specific booktoker for sending it to me after I won her contest. But however I came across this book, I’m so grateful to have read it! This book is amazing and the writing is outstanding. I wasn’t even sure what this book was about before I received it in the mail, I just knew that a lot of people said they couldn’t put it down and that’s the kind of book I wanted to read.
This story is dystopian in nature and has a definite sci-fi feel to it. There’s a take over in place and, of course, a group of people who are set on rebelling and taking back their world. What I found to be a bit different in this story than what I’ve read before, was first of all the relationship that emerges between Raven and Eighth. I found the growth between these two characters and the growth the two characters had in and of themselves to be intriguing and fascinating. The other part of the story that sticks out to me for being so different is the shock at the end. I won’t spoil you, but I will say that I has suspicions throughout the story that I kept dismissing and then picking back up. Only to have been proven partially correct, though not in the way I anticipated.
Warnings… there are deaths in this book. Not everyone will make it. There is some violence and and actions that might trigger some people. There is also a cliff hanger. You WILL want book two as soon as possible. Lucky for you (and me) the 2nd book is already published. Happy Reading!
Well, that was unexpected.
To be honest, I haven’t heard about this series before I bought it. I was skeptical at first but the blurb and the cover won me over. It seemed like something I would like and I was completely right.
You might be thinking: a book about aliens taking over our planet and a possible hint of romance, what’s new? Let me tell you. The charm of this book lies not with the plot but with the relationship between our two main characters, August and Raven. But don’t get me wrong. I liked the plot. It ebbed and flowed at the right moments. It laid the foundation for the development of the bond between August and Raven.
Many books have been written about human and non-human relationships. However, it often doesn’t feel like they’re two different creatures. It’s either the attraction was already there from the beginning or the non-human character looks human that it doesn’t really make a difference. But this book was different. There was an initial repulsion and hate that I really, really felt.
This book is like a cross between Beauty and the Beast and The Shape of Water (the movie, I haven’t read the book yet). August was really nice and cared for Raven but the difference between them is clear as day. Their voices also had good contrast and I felt the difference in their personalities. It was engaging and even though August mostly wanders around and does not think the normal way, it was never boring. He was fascinating and I was looking forward to his POV the most.
But the most unexpected thing about this book is that it made me cry. Like big, fat tears. There was a part where I really felt August’s sadness and it broke my heart. It was so palpable and I just wanted to hug him and let him know that it will all be okay. He was such a sweet, loyal, and adorable character that I wanted to protect him.
I read this book thinking that the sequel was already out. The ending was really unexpected and I really, really want to know what happens next.
TL;DR, READ THIS BOOK IF:
• you like Beauty and the Beast
• you don’t mind romance between physically different creatures
• you like stories that focus a lot on the development of the relationship between the characters
• you are okay with medium or sometimes slow-paced plot
