THE CLASSIC BOOK THAT HAS INSPIRED MILLIONS
A penetrating examination of how we live and how to live better
Few books transform a generation and then establish themselves as touchstones for the generations that follow. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is one such book. This modern epic of a man’s search for meaning became an instant bestseller on publication in 1974, acclaimed as one … instant bestseller on publication in 1974, acclaimed as one of the most exciting books in the history of American letters. It continues to inspire millions.
A narration of a summer motorcycle trip undertaken by a father and his son, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance becomes a personal and philosophical odyssey into fundamental questions on how to live. The narrator’s relationship with his son leads to a powerful self-reckoning; the craft of motorcycle maintenance leads to an austerely beautiful process for reconciling science, religion, and humanism. Thought provoking.
Oldie but goodie. Read it and learn about life
My favourite book of all time. Not many people finish it, but the ones who do are after my heart.
I don’t think this book has received the recognition it deserves as one of the most important philosophy books of the 20th century. I suspect that Pirsig’s philosophy of quality was too practical — too American — to have been subsumed into the mostly European philosophical mainstream. Pirsig is to Kant, Hegel & Wittgenstein what Cicero was to …
Deserves all the praise it has received. Definitely a book worth buying and reading periodically..I think I’ve read it thrice, so far.
This book is pure art and manages to express the spirit of Zen without a single word about it…what do they say about indirect pointing or whatever?
I had to select original because thought provoking was not among the choices. I’ve reread this book 3 times and pick up more each time. Meant something different in each stage of my life
This is one of this books that I enjoyed but I will have to re-visit it again at a later date. Parts of it get really deep — I have to think about it and let it set a while then read it again, but I did enjoy it.
I read this in the early ’70s and it’s never been off my Top 3 books list. It still has such depth & relevance that I re-read it at least once a year… and that’s the definition of a classic in my mind.
This book gave me my first exposure to the reality mind trap inherent in the deep analysis of any ideas, philosophical or psychological.
The author takes you throught two journeys at the same time, weaving back and forth between his fall into his mind trap and his progress back into a meaning full life.
I learned about:
It is a very good thing …
I have loved this book for years. Read it with my son, just sent it to my son in law in the Navy.
In my humble opinion, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is the greatest book every written. Complex, cerebral, and intriguing. A man on the cusp of losing his mind…for the second time in his life. A journey to find out who he was, while the uber-intelligent ghost of that persona haunts him in his search for the truth. Both asking and …
One of the greatest books of the Twentieth Century. Explores the nature of reality in surprisingly personal ways.
